MILD DAYS COLD NIGHTS

How does climate, geography, and natural resources effect their daily life and jobs?

Romania is about the size of Oregon and has lots of mountains and plateaus. Romanian summers are mild, the temperature in July is about 77 degrees. The winters are cool with January temperatures about 27 degrees. Most people wear t shirts, jeans, sweaters, and coats that come from the west. About 41% of Romania is suitable for farming and about 29% is forests. This means that most jobs are farming, logging, mining, art, and herding. Since there are a lot of mountains many farmers use terracing and other techniques to farm. The Carpathian Mountains is the country's dominant geographical feature form, forming a “crown” in the north and central regions, nearly surrounding the Transylvanian plateau. Natural resources include lumber, coal and other mineable objects, and chemicals. People use these natural resources to make tables out of wood , also they can make jewelry out of the things they get from mining.

THE LIFE OF A VAMPIRE

What do we need to know about these people to understand what makes their culture unique?

Many buildings in Romania are like castles, even though many buildings look like castles there are modern houses too. When they’re introduced to someone they greet them by saying salutations, hello, its an honor, they’ll kiss their hand, or simply say I kiss your hand. When they’re leaving they say good luck, goodbye, or they kiss the hand again. Romanians love art and many people in Romania create textiles, knit blankets, and draw pictures. Romanians like sports with their favorite being soccer. They also normally wear sneakers, jeans, and leather jackets. They listen to modern music but also favor older traditional folk music. Romania has no state religion but a majority of it is Christian. Romania is grounded in tradition and keeps traditional methods of weaving, shepherding, and other trades. Anther tradition is to hold superstitions and tell scary tales about vampires, werewolves, and other creepy things. Romania's food sees touches of Turkish, Hungarian, Austrian, and other cuisines. Soups are often made without meat, or made with fish. Zama is a green bean soup with chicken, parsley, and dill. They usually have three meals a day around the time we do. Romaneste is a Romance language spoken by around 24 million people as a native language primarily in Romania and Moldova, and by anther 4 million by a second language. Between 271 CE and 275 CE, the Roman army and administration left Dacia, which was invaded by the Goths. The Goths mixed with the local people until the 4th century when the Huns arrived and ruled them until the 8th century.

MODERN ROMANIA

How has this event affected the U.S?

Romania is part of the European union. Romania had a economic recession in 2009 and has become the second poorest economy in Europe. As a reaction to “austerity measures” people protested in Bucharest on January 2012. In April they voted their government out of power. These problems have affected the relationship between Romania and the U.S. Our State Department worries that if this continues it will push their country of 22 million people back towards communism and away from democracy.
