ROMLING/SPANISH 333: Techniques of Pronunciation and Oral Expression Prof. Olga Gallego TTh 8:30-10 am #31277 / #31222 Spanish 333 is an introduction to Spanish phonetics and phonology. In this class you will learn about the sound patterns of Spanish, and will apply this new knowledge to the improvement of your pronunciation. SPANISH 355: New World Spanish: Spanish in the U.S. Prof. Teresa Satterfield TTh 10-11:30 am #30207 This course traces the importance of the Spanish language in the United States and presents an overview of the major regional and dialectal varieties of Spanish that are spoken here. We explore the distinguishing social, ethnic and linguistic characteristics of these US Spanish varieties, and will briefly examine the phenomenon popularly known as ‘Spanglish’. ROMLING/SPANISH 410: Spanish Phonetics and Phonology Prof. Nicholas Henriksen MW 11:30 am - 1 pm #27210 / #27189 This advanced Spanish Linguistics course presents a complete overview of the Spanish sound system and establishes the basis for application of principles at the phonetic (especially articulatory and acoustic phonetics) and phonological levels of linguistic analysis. Students will apply their knowledge of course content through homework assignments, dictations, transcriptions, short research projects, quizzes, and exams. ROMLING/SPANISH 414: Background of Modern Spanish Prof. Steven Dworkin MW 10-11:30 am #30231 / #30180 This course will study the evolution of Spanish from the Roman Empire until today against the background of the historical, political, cultural, and social history of the Iberian Peninsula. SPANISH 415: Problems in Language Translation Prof. Olga Gallego TTh 11:30 am-1 pm #31223 Spanish 415 focuses on developing advanced language skills and the techniques required for translating from and to Spanish through extensive exposure to authentic translation materials. ROMLING/SPANISH 418: Spanish Second Language Acquisition Prof. Lorenzo Garcia-Amaya MW 2:30-4 pm #31805 / #31802 This course provides an introduction to the general process of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and more specifically, to the most relevant theories of second language learning. Although there will be an emphasis on the acquisition in Spanish, other languages will be discussed as well. Students will apply their knowledge of course content in various data analysis activities, homework assignments, oral presentations, and exams. Spanish 487: Studies in Hispanic Linguistics: Afro-Hispanic Language Prof. Teresa Satterfield TTh 1-2:30 pm #33635 In this seminar, we examine major varieties of Afro-Hispanic language found in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America over the last 500 years. We will separate legitimate forms of Afro-Hispanic expression from those that are the result of racist stereotyping, while exploring how contact with the African diaspora has had a permanent impact on contemporary Spanish.
