Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!

On Wednesday 8th July, Year 3 went

to Cullercoats Beach for the day. When I got to school I

w a s s o excited that

we were about to leave. Mr Hannah, Mrs

Blakey, Mrs Bullerwell, two parents and Mr Hannah’s daughter Amy were going to be looking after us for the day. Unfortunately as we set off from the school, the weather d idn’t look that promising. It was grey skies and starting to drizzle. I hoped it would brighten up while we were on the coach. My partner was Robyn and we sat near the back because Mr Hannah had said we could sit anywhere on the coach. He usually doesn’t let us do that. The journey took about 45 minutes but the grey clouds didn’t disappear. When we got to the beach we were allowed to have a little snack from our lunches. It’s funny how you are always dying for lunch time on school trips! After our

snack, Robyn and I jumped onto the soft golden sand and ran down

to the sea to collect some water in our buckets. Good job we weren’t swimming in the sea as it froze my toes. We dug a hole and filled it

with the water to make our own private paddling pool. The only trouble was that the sand must have had a leak in it as we kept having to refill the hole, funny how that always happens at the beach. Next we played tag and rounders. I enjoyed both games and it kept you warm as it still hadn’t brightened up. After a while Mr Hannah called everyone to have our packed lunches. I had a delicious ham and cheese wrap, a packet of cheesy quavers, some grapes, a crunchy carrot stick, a ginger bread man and a bar of chocolate. I know it sounds a lot but it was just right as I was starving. During lunch, the wind started to pick up and finally the rain started. Mr Hannah and Amy had golf umbrellas so some us huddled together under them until the shower passed. Some of us just ran around, playing as usual, it didn’t really bother me.

The ra i n finally stopped

and we were allowed to continue playing on the sand. After that, Mr Hannah took us into the caves and told us

of the scary Captain Scarface. He was such a horrible pirate that he used to cut his victims with a knife so they would have 4 scars on their face, finally killing his victims by cutting their throat. It was a little bit scary but good fun all the same. We only had a few more minutes playing before we had to get back on the coach. On the journey back, everyone was quite tired. We all thought we had had a great trip, despite the weather.

This term Year 4 were involved in a skipping festival at St Thomas More’s. About a month before the festival a lady named Liz showed us how to skip, and lots of new skipping routines. We had to

practice these before we competed against other schools in the festival. We did exercises to get us warmed up; Apart from individual skipping skills we also had to think of a skipping routine for the whole class with our teacher. After a vote we decided to create a routine to the song ‘The Nights’ by Avicii. We learned a lot of new skipping skills like double bounce; speed bounce, pretzel, cross over, side swing and the hop scotch. When we got there we were really excited we just wanted to do the skipping

skipping routine we had individual competitions against the other

schools. Ty and Shannon did the double bounce, Lucy and Eleanor did the butterfly, Amber and Ellie Purvis did ‘Face to Face’.

Eleanor and Lucy won gold for the Butterfly, Ty won silver for double bounce. Amber and Ellie Purvis won bronze for ‘Face to Face. Elise, Leila, Jessica, Katie, Emma, Tom, Layla, Ellie Knotts Smith, Megan and Grace won bronze for the team skip ‘Keep the pot boiling’ and Jessica, Layla, Grace, Ellie Knotts Smith, Harry, Emma and Megan also won bronze for the Team skip ‘Run in run out’ We had a great day.

Bicycle Race On Monday 1st June Year 4 went on an outstanding bike

ride to Newburn. First we

came to school in non-uniform with our bikes and

put them outside of our

classroom as soon as we

got there. We

went back onto the

playground like it was a

normal day. After Mr Godfrey took the register, to see if

everyone was there and as he

did this we had a talk with

Ben (he is the one that coaches our school for all

things Bike! It used to be

another person called Alison but she is training children at

another school now).

Ben was talking about how we should behave on our bikes so

that we are safe

around roads and

people. We then went outside on to

the playground to

play some games next we made a

circle with our

bikes so the

front wheel was touching someone

else’s back wheel. The reason

why everyone did that was to make sure that everyone’s

bikes were working correctly

before we started to head off. We pushed our bikes up

the ramp because it was too steep to peddle, then we got

on our bikes and cycled along

the grass out of school. We cycled to the gate at the end

of the grass. We had to get

off our bikes and go through

the gate on the right hand side (because there were

some nettles on the left hand

side, obviously we didn’t want to get nettled!).

When we all got through the

gate we got back on our bikes and cycled down the

steep bank with Ben in

front of us (just a little hint

when you go down a steep bank always

hold on to

your

brakes!) By the

way the

gate we cycled

through was the gate

that led us into the burn. When we were at the bottom

of the steep bank we walked

through another gate,

(that gate was called the

kissing

gate). We were now

near the river

and if we kept

up with Ben we could go really

fast but we had to

be careful in case we fell in the river. We rode

along the burn towards the

flyover and near to the railway line suddenly we

ended up in a new housing estate but we were going the

right way. We were very close

now to Newburn Park. Even though Year 4 were very close

to the park we had another

stop. It was time to finally

cross the bridge with our bikes. The bridge is very

narrow so we all got off our

bikes and walked over the Newburn side of the bridge.

When we got to Newburn we

crossed the road by the side of the pub (here

we saw

dates

and

marker levels that

showed how high the

water in the Tyne was when it had flooded.) We cycled on

and on until we came to the

river again, next we came to a wooden bridge to get in to

Newburn carpark, everyone

was relieved. I think everyone

was happy because they were very hungry, and the only way

I know this is because after

only a few minutes at the park their lunch was nearly

gone! We cycled back to

school and went home. It was

harder going back and everyone was tired at the

end, so that was our trip to

Newburn Park. Hope you enjoyed!

Flower of Scotland On Monday the 7th of July our class Year 6 went to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. We had to meet at the train station before 8:15am because the train boarded at 8:30.

It took 1hr 30mins to get there. Everybody was partnered with the people they wanted to be with but some people were in a four. On

the train ride to keep us entertained we played bingo. Abby N and Abby V won. They won some haribos but everyone else got them so it was equal. After we got off the train, we got sorted and ordered our McDonalds, and then we walked to Dynamic Earth. On our way there we saw lots of people playing the bag pipes and Finlay was dancing in his own little world! When we finally arrived at Dynamic Earth!! We put our bags in a little trolley then we set off on our adventure around the history timeline!

We went in to a history museum and we went back in time to the big bang. We learnt how the world changed from nothing to now.

After that we went to the volcano and learned how an earthquake affects the volcano. Then we went to the ice age. In the middle of the room there was a massive iceberg. There were lots of holes in the iceberg where we had to stick our fingers in. IT WAS FREEZING COLD!!!!!!! Our last thing was going in to a massive dome where we saw the different planets and how they are cold and warm because of the distance from the sun.

After lunch we all gathered together and left for Edinburgh Castle. We entered the castle with elegance and grace but we were startled by the old fashion guards.

We looked at the view from the castle. Then we walked into the chapel everything was fun but we had to be quiet .Then we went in

to the most private place in the building, the crown jewels. No one could take pictures not even QUEEN!!! After that we went to the gift shop but most things were too expensive. Mostly everyone got a notebook, a pencil, some rock and some shortbread. Eventually we had our McDonalds. It was delicious! Then we walked back to the train station. On our way back we realised that this would be our last trip together. Everyone In year 6 said,” THANK YOU TEACHERS THANK YOU ST. JOSEPH’S FOR HAVING US!!”

Sailing whistle a special sound so the captain of the boat would hear it. Finally we sailed away. Me and Keira were pretending to surf because the boat was rocking side to side! We then went back to our seats and we all looked over the side of the boat. Beth felt sea sick and she had to focus on Longstone lighthouse. When we were looking over the side of the boat we saw some amazing things. We saw lots of jellyfish swimming past. We also saw puffins. Since we have been learning about Grace Darling the man on the boat told us a bit about Grace Darling and showed us which rock Great Harker rock was. After that we saw some seals in the sea and some on land. We stopped at Inner Farne and got off.

The National Trust who own the island told us that they had a new rule and that you could no longer wear bicycle helmets as this could hurt the birds beaks. Mr Godfrey gave his hat to Eleanor and as he walked onto

the Island he was the first to get nipped on the head by a tern!!! It was great seeing all those birds and especially the puffins. It was a brilliant trip!

By Emma Year 4

Year 4 got off the bus at Seahouses and we were all very excited, we were going to see the birds of the Farne Islands. Mr Godfrey told us to

bring our bicycle helmets just in case the arctic terns tried

to peck our heads! We had to get into our groups. Me, Elise, Ty, Harry, Amber and

Beth were in Mr Ramanandi’s group. We had to get into partners in our groups, while Mr Ramanandi counted us. We started to walk to the harbour. There were lots of boats there, all taking crowds of people out on trips across the North Sea. There were lots of people. When we were walking towards our boat we saw another boat about to set sail and when we looked closely at the boat we realised that Jamie who had

been off school and had missed our trip was on that boat. It was such a surprise. We were all waving as Jamie’s boat left the harbour and Jamie was waving back. We got on to our boat we were all very excited

but some of us were a little bit scared. We climbed into the boat, it was rocking from side to side. We had to put our life jackets on before the man could let us sail

off. The life jackets had whistles on. Mrs Blakey said it was in case we fell in the water and the whistle would

You’re So Fine On

the 8th of July 2015 Year 4 went to the

Newcastle Falcons Stadium in Kingston Park, to go to an exceptional rugby tournament! The day started off when we arrived at school at our normal time, however dressed a bit differently! We had to wear some tracksuit bottoms and a jacket but some people wore leggings or shorts. At about 11:45am Mr Godfrey told us to get ready by getting our coats and our packed lunches. When we got our packed

lunches and coats we went to our tables, and sat down to eat our scrumptious packed lunches! As we were eating our packed lunches Mr Godfrey told us which groups we were in. The first group was called ‘The Antelopes’ these

were, Layla, Lucy, Ben, Dominic, Ellie KS, Ellie P, Nicole, Jessica, Charlotte and Emma. The next group was called ‘The Bears’ and in that

were Beth, Hannah, Elise, Shannon, Keira, Eleanor, Ty and Tom. The final group was called ’The Cougars’ and in that group were Kai, Katie, May, Jake, Harry, Megan, Saphia and Leila. Straight after Mr Godfrey told us what group we were in we had to line up with our partner in the library. Everyone was excited, you could tell because they wouldn’t

stop talking! After we finished our lunch Mr Godfrey told us it’s time to go’, Layla realised she forgot her water! The coach journey wasn’t long. It was only about a 15 minute drive so not that long. Finally we got to the stadium. We all had to go into our groups to go to the pitch we were going to play on. So the first group to play was the bears then the cougars and finally the antelopes. The bears sadly lost their opening game; the Cougars won their first and the antelopes lost as well. But things were looking good for the Bears because they won every game after that! But sadly the Antelopes didn’t win as many because they were playing against Year 5 children. The cougars won their first game and didn’t look back because

they kept winning every game! Jessica, who was in the Antelopes, was really fast scoring one try!

Luckily that scored the win! We played four matches in each league and at the end of that the points and scores were all counted

and the moment finally came, when to find out if any of our teams would get into the semi-finals! The first group that was called out was ‘Our Lady of the Rosary school which had come all the way from Hartlepool Their children screamed for joy. The

next group

was called West Jesmond 2’ they too screamed REALLY LOUD! Third was ‘West Jesmond 1’ they weren’t really paying any attention, but finally it was ‘St. Joseph’s Cougars!’ We SCREAMED LOUDEST of all!!! We were so happy! Sadly the antelopes and the bears didn’t get through but they still done great! So the first people we faced West Jesmond 1 and guess what, we WON!!!! So West Jesmond 2 was against Our Lady of the Rosary and Our lady’s won! So the final was between ourselves and Our Lady of the Rosary. Could we win? We were so excited. The game was quick and fast, every time we scored a try

they seemed to get one too, but after about 5 minutes we took a two try lead and we didn’t look

back . All the boys and girls played really well as the final whistle blew the scores were in! The moment came. ‘First place goes to………………

ST. JOSEPH’S C!!!!! Well done!! Everyone jumped out of their seats!!!! ‘WHOO HOOO!’ So out of everything, the day was great!! It was a good choice to go to tag rugby.

By Beth and Layla Year 4.

school scheme has a huge bank of songs and after much deliberation

we chose the tune of ‘Lean on me’ by Bill Withers. Writing the lyrics was easy with all of the ideas we had collected and so we then had to put the tune and lyrics together and practice, practice, practice!!! We recorded our song, called ‘Let’s play fair’, on an i-pad with Mrs Cape and Mrs Alder and then sent it off to the Gateshead School Sport Partnership with all of our fingers crossed for a good result. Two weeks later we received an exciting email from the Partnership which informed us that the standard was exceptionally high in

the competition and the panel of judges had great difficulty in

compiling their shortlist of entries and identifying the eventual winner of the competition. However, our school’s performance was identified as the runner up of this year’s RESPECT AWARD!

We were thrilled that all of our

hard work and creativity had been

recognised and we await the

delivery of our second place

certificate. Year 2

This term, the Gateshead Sport Partnership ran their first ‘Blazing

the Trail Respect Pathway Project’ for schools throughout Gateshead. The competition was linked to music; schools were asked to use their creativity to perform a song or a rap encompassing the theme – RESPECT. The children in Year two eagerly set about compiling ideas for their song and worked together to brainstorm what RESPECT in sport meant to them. Once they had collected their ideas together we then had to decide on a tune to write our lyrics to. Our interactive Charanga music

Going for Gold! On June 26th some of KS2 went to Gateshead International Stadium to do some athletics. There were lots of events including skipping, sprint, 800 and 600 run, javelin, spring jumps, long jump and relay. Most of the children that went took part in an event but some were just reserves. At about 10:30 the first few events took part on the track and on the field Beth, Katie, Harry and Jake were up first in the sprint and the skipping. All of St Joseph’s were cheering them on and it paid off since they all got through to the semi-finals. Next it was the Year 5/6 sprint and skipping and Lucy, Lucas, Amy and Adam took place in these events and did really well. After that was the 80m sprint which Emma and Joseph took part in and both went into the semi-finals! Next it was the 600m and 800m run which May, Jake, Lois and Finlay competed in and did excellent. Later on was the long jump and then the three spring jumps; everyone

done exceptionally well in the jumps. Finally, it was the relay and all of year 3/4 girls and boys and 5/6 girls got into the finals and the girls year 3/4 team came 1st but the boys came 4th which is amazing!!!! Sadly the year 5/6 boys didn’t get into the finals but they came 3rd in the semi-finals. After the long wait it was finally the girls relay. We had come 1st in every race so far so that means we were in the finals but would we win?… Emma, Lara, Lois and Lucy were in the zone to win the gold medal, it was time to compete Emma and Lois walked down to the other side of the track while Lara and Lucy got ready to run. Finally the moment came, on your marks…… get set………GO!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as Lois heard

the man say go she sprinted as fast as she could to the other side of the track and gave the baton to Lara. As Lara got the baton she started to sprint, we were 3rd and as soon as Lara passed the baton to Emma she sprinted off into 2nd place. As Lucy waited impatiently for the baton all of us cheered for Emma then she passed the baton to Lucy and she darted for the finish line and we came 1St!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of us were so pleased with ourselves and waited excitingly for the medal presentation. As they handed out the silver and bronze medals we waited patiently till they called out St Joseph’s. Then we stepped on to the podium and received our gold medals as the crowd went wild and all the cameras were directly on us. We had an AMAZING day at Gat e sh ea d In t e rn at io na l Stadium!!!!!!

Year 6 have recently been on a trip to Allensford for 2 nights and 3 days. Over the time there, we got the opportunity to open our eyes to realise the world and the things around us. Together as a class, we learnt to appreciate everything that we have such as family, friends and the world around us. The activities that Year 6 completed (as a team) were lessons about life and how problems can be solved. The challenges that we worked together to complete were coming together to make a team chant that reflects our

lounge. When we arrived the rooms where very nice and tidy and we tried to keep that way! Nearing to the end of our time at Allensford we did a

workshop. Some of us did a dance and some of us did a drama play and the rest of us did art that formed a picture of Jesus (that we brought to school with us.) As we were at

Allensford we learnt a song which was called Rock Hosanna. We had a brilliant time on the retreat and made lots of fantastic memories!

Gimme Shelter

most of us were confident enough to go high. The instructors (Ollie and Sam) would not force you to go any height you didn’t want to, but they would cheer you on whatever you chose. The 3G swing was basically a massive swing that swings backwards and forwards over and over again. Before bed time, we went for hot chocolate in the diner; it was delicious! Once we had all finished, we went back to our rooms where we talked and ate sweets for a bit. As we were all drifting off to sleep, our hearts were still pounding from the memory of the frightful 3G swing. The next day at 8am we went down to the diner and had breakfast. To our surprise it was a cooked breakfast which was: eggs, bacon, toast, beans and hash brown, you also had the choice of cereal and fruit. After breakfast we went to the tuck shop to spend our money; there was lots to choose from (although it was a little pricey!). Then we went back to the dorms to digest our breakfast. Another day of activities lay ahead of us: Shelter Building, Problem Solving, Quad Bikes and Night Line. After Lunch the Y group did Leap of Faith. Leap of Faith got our hearts racing like mad! It looked so small, so easy. IT WAS NOT! You had to climb up a 28 foot telegraph pole and stand up without anyone helping you. It’s so hard and scary because it feels like if you fall, you will actually fall to the ground below.

More than half of the class made the leap. When you stand on the pole it shakes like mad but to be fair, it was a lovely view! Then you hear the words 3, 2, 1, LEAP OF FAITH! This was our cue to jump and the point where most of our hearts stopped. Leap of Faith was a terrifying but absolutely amazing experience. Everyone was ready for their beds by the time it came to lights out. When morning came, everyone felt sad that it was our last day. Because there were only 2 more

activities waiting for us, and then we had to go home at

half 1. Y’s first activity was zip wire and Z’s was

scrap-heap challenge. The zip wire was amazing! It’s on the

abseiling tower and has a massive zip wire

going across the whole field. The teachers said that there

was money in the tyre at the end of the zip wire and you had to try and grab it, but we didn’t believe them, we think they said it to get us all on! Group Z had to make a story about what a water balloon could be (for example a dinosaur or alien egg), and had to package the water balloon up so it wouldn’t burst. After a final meal, we went to collect our bags. It was so sad to leave our favourite instructor Ollie (Murs). We all got on the coach disappointed to be leaving, but we had a brilliant time making amazing memories.

By Emma and Olivia Y5

We arrived! As we turned our heads from side to side, we could see children dangling from ropes, other groups blind-folded as they were led around like zombies and worn out teachers desperately trying, but dramatically failing, to keep up with all the action. Everyone was excited to meet our leader Oliver (Ollie) and see what he had in store for us. He was really friendly and we were soon laughing at his cheesy jokes. Ollie took us to our dorms which

were lined up like soldiers ready for

battle. First of all we went into

our rooms and had to make our beds (it

was very hard!). After that Ollie took

us for a tour around Kingswood which was very quick because it was raining. Then we had lunch which was chicken, chips and peas. It was delicious! After lunch we got split into two groups, Y and Z. Before every activity there was a shout out. The leader would say, for example, “Group Z ARE YOU READY FOR SHELTER BUILDING?” and we replied by saying, “DO YOU WANT TO BUILD A SHELTER, IT DOSNT HAVE TO BE A SHELTER, BUT IT DOES!” Our first day was so busy with groups doing fencing, rock climbing, campfire and either 3G swing or laser tag. The 3G swing was extremely high (30 feet in fact!) It was a test of your fears to see how high you would go. A few people said low, a few people said medium but

All are welcome in St. Joseph’s

where everyone is special, cared for

and challenged to be the best they can be

in our safe and happy school.

We strive to

love justice, show mercy and

walk wisely and humbly with God.

We will love one another in Christ

knowing that Jesus loves us very much.

Roll of Honour

All of the above children have received a Head Teacher's

PTA The Friends of St. Joseph’s, our Parent Teacher Association, thank everyone for their support this term.

The children enjoyed their Sports Day, Summer Fair and the Summer Disco organised by the Friends. The Friends were overwhelmed by the donations for the Summer Fair Raffle and the number of tickets bought. An amazing £1820.92 profit was raised from all the occasions. The Friends of St Joseph’s give generously to the school to help buy resources for the children and subsidise class trips.
