6 2012 Shining Star Award Dinners

Letter From Fr. Keating

September 28, 2012

October 5, 2012

Dear Friends,

We gather together this evening to recognize and honor those we call our “Shining Stars,” special individuals who are dedicated to their community and the Church. Each one of the honorees has a special story. We are fortunate to have such shining examples to represent the Church of Brooklyn and Queens. They truly personify the best of what their community has to contribute to our Diocese, our City and our Country.

I wish to express my gratitude to Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and Msgr. Ronald T. Marino, and the Board of Directors of Catholic Migration Services for joining us. I am truly grateful to the Board of Directors who support and guide the work of this agency.

I wish to thank each of you for making the financial sacrifice to support our mission of “welcoming the stranger” by joining us this evening and for those who are listed in our program booklet. In a special way, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the DeSales Media Group for being our Premier Sponsor this year.

I wish to thank the dedicated staffs of Catholic Migration Services and Resources for their hard work and dedication, especially to all who have worked tirelessly to assure that this event is an outstanding success.

Once again, congratulations to our “Shining Stars” honorees, tonight is your night. To all our guests, enjoy yourselves, thank you, and may Almighty God continue to bless each of you for your dedication to the Church and commitment to Catholic Migration Services.

Sincerely in Christ,

Reverend Patrick Joseph Keating

Neveen Harun ARABIC SPEAKING SHINING STAR

Neveen Harun was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1980. Neveen immigrated to the United States in 1995 to be closer to her family. She is married

to Ragai Harun. She originally attended St. George Coptic Catholic Church but today she attends Resurrection Coptic Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Neveen enjoys welcoming new parishioners to her parish and making them feel as if they are extended family. She takes care of the Tripes, and involves herself in the planning of Church related parties. Naveen is also responsible for keeping track of Church membership information and regularly communicates with them if they haven’t been to Mass in a while.

Naveen attended Staten Island College where she studied Business Management and Finance. She currently works in the financial department of Delta Perfume House, Inc. Naveen feels she was chosen to be the recipient of the Shining Star 2012 because anytime the Church needs her, she is always available to help and the word “no” is not in her vocabulary. Naveen had been asked several times to be the Shining Star representing the Arabic Speaking Apostolate but always refused the honor. She always felt that whatever she did for the Church was between her and God. What changed her mind this year is that she felt God wanted her to enjoy the time being happy doing something for the Church, and accepting the nomination of being the Shining Star 2012 is a gift from God.

The Arabic Speaking Apostolate proudly nominates Naveen Harun as their Shining Star 2012 for all her time and dedication to the Resurrection Coptic Catholic Church.

Alexssandra de Carvalho BRAZILIAN SHINING STAR

Alexssandra de Carvalho was born in 1972 in the town of Poços de Caldas in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

She is the fourth of Emanuel and Teresa de Carvalho’s six children. Ms. Carvalho has two children in their early twenties, Alexandre and Stephanie. In 1995 Alexssandra emigrated with her two daughters to the United States. She became part of the choir after joining the Brazilian Apostolate in 1997, and then joined the liturgical staff. She is also a member of the Pastoral Council at St. Rita.

Alexssandra works as a professional nanny. She has given splendid gifts to the Brazilian community: dedication, availability, commitment, enthusiam and devotion through the sacred music and liturgy – which are beautiful ways to praise God. She is now a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians and is currently training to become a Cantor. Alexssandra believes she’s been nominated for the Shining Star Award because she’s been working with and for the Brazilian community for fifteen years with deep love and dedication.

Tonight we thank our Lord for you, Alexssandra. You as a Brazilian woman, devoted mother, faithful Catholic and our loyal friend. You are our star. A star which shines making the difference amongst us. A star that helps us to improve our lives as members of the One and Only Church. You brighten up our days through your obedience to Jesus: “Let you light shine before men.” We, members of the Brazilian Apostolate of the Diocese of Brooklyn love you! May your light keep leading us to Jesus.

Walter & Gladys Galvan COLUMBIAN SHINING STAR

Walterio Galvan was born in Rio Viejo, Colombia, in 1935. He immigrated to the United States in 1964 in search of job opportunities and a better

quality of life for his family. Gladys Galvan was born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1940. She immigrated to the United States in 1965. Her reason for migrating to the United States was for a better life and education for her children. Walter and Gladys both attended St. Leo’s Church in Corona, Queens but currently attend St. Michael’s in Flushing, Queens. Walter and Gladys are ushers every Sunday at the 1pm Mass and other Masses if needed. They’re both involved in the Charismatic Prayer Group, Committee Members of the Association of the Divine Child and Our Lady of Chiquinquira; and both volunteer for La Casitia, a community outreach program plus other activities.

Walter and Gladys were raised in Catholic families and wanted the same for their own family. Both derive great joy in helping others. Walter and Gladys feel the Church has contributed a great richness to their lives. Their grandchildren attended Catholic schools, including Catholic colleges. Their children and grandchildren have followed in their footsteps and all are involved in community service. Together they have two sons and one daughter, and several grandchildren. Walter has been a mechanic for forty years and Gladys has worked in various daycare centers as well as other companies for many years. Both Walter and Gladys feel they were chosen to be the Shining Stars because they are eager to serve God with love and smiles. Both want to thank each other for always supporting one another.

It is with great pride and joy that they have been nominated to represent the Colombian community as the recipients of the Shining Star Awards 2012.

Serge & Fely Carrera FILIPINO SHINING STAR

Serge Carrera was born in Bimaley, Pangasinan in the Philippines. He was born in 1937 and immigrated to the United States in 1965. Serge joined the US Navy and was

stationed in various places, including San Diego, Boston, and Patuxent River in Maryland. Serge served in the Navy from 1965 through 1974, and from 1974 through 2005 worked in the US Customs Service/Department of Homeland Security as a Financial Analyst.

Fely Carrera was also born in Bimaley, Pangasinan in the Philippines. She was born in 1943 and immigrated to the United States in 1970 to join her husband Serge. Fely worked as a Computer Operator for twenty-one years at the General Adjustment Bureau and presently works in the payroll department for the NYC Department of Education. They attended Blessed Sacrament for three years, and currently attend St. Rose of Lima. Serge and Fely were brought up in devout Catholic families and attended Catholic school. They wanted the same for their two daughters, Maria and Melissa. Both daughters attended Catholic school at St. Rose of Lima.

Serge is an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister at St. Rose of Lima. Fely is the Head Enabler of the Filipino Diocesan Apostolate of the Brooklyn Council. She is also a member of the Pastoral Planning Committee, Fundraising Committee, an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister of Communion, a Lector and a former member of the choir. Both Serge and Fely are the Filipino Mass Coordinators at St. Rose of Lima and belong to the Lady of Purification Prayer Group, and are also part of the Marriage Encounter 13 - Bukas Loob Sa Dios (BLD) Long Island Chapter. They are also lifetime members of the Neo-Filipino Association, Inc. Serge and Fely are both active members of their Church and hope to be an example to their fellow parishioners and their community to live the Word of God.

The Filipino Apostolate is happy to recognize Serge and Fely Carrera as the 2012 Shining Star recipients.

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ.

rough the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, un-der God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

St. Raphael is one of seven Archangels who stand before the throne of the Lord. He was sent by God to help Tobit, Tobiah and Sarah. At the time, Tobit was blind and Tobiah’s betrothed, Sarah, had had seven bridegrooms perish on the night of their weddings. Raphael accompanied Tobiah into Media disguised as a man named Azariah. Raphael helped him through his difficulties and taught him how to safely enter marriage with Sarah. Tobiah said that Raphael caused him to have his wife and that he gave joy to Sarah’s parents for driving out the evil spirit in her. He also gave Raphael credit for his father’s seeing the light of heaven and for receiving all good things through his intercession.

Besides Raphael, Michael and Gabriel are the only Archangels mentioned by name in the bible. Raphael’s name means “God heals.” This identity came about because of the biblical story which claims that he “healed” the earth when it was defiled by the sins of the fallen angels in the apocryphal book of Enoch. Raphael is also identified as the angel who moved the waters of the healing sheep pool. He is also the patron of Catholic singles, of happy meetings, of nurses, of physicians, the blind, and of travelers. His feast day is September 29th.

Raphael’s words to Tobit “Thank God! Give Him the praise and the glory. Before all the living, acknowledge the many good things He has done for you, by blessing and extolling His Name in song. Before all men, honor and proclaim God’s deeds and do not be slack in praising Him. A king’s secret is prudent to keep, but the works of God are to be made known with due honor. Do good and evil will not find its way to you” (Tobit 12:6-8).

New Missal Series with Fr. Joel Warden, CO (September through December)On Sunday, November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent, the revised English translation of the third Editio Typica of the Roman Missal will take effect in English-speaking churches throughout the world. In practical terms, this will mean we speak and sing our prayers with a slightly different English language style. Spiritually speaking, in appropriating Mass prayers that are recast and renewed, we will have an opportunity to deepen our appreciation for and understanding of the very nature of our acts of communal worship. With both the practical and the spiritual interests in mind, the Adult Faith Formation Committee has asked Fr. Joel to present a series of four lecture-discussions on topics of perennial interest in the liturgy. They are as follows:

Sacred Space: A Tour Through St. Bonifacewith Fr. Joel Warden, COHuman beings are en-fleshed spirit, en-souled bodies. We live at a specified time and in a specific place. As such, the careful way by which we locate ourselves as a community in a church building (our religious family’s home) says much about what we believe our worship to be all about. This walking tour through our own church home will provide an explanation for some of the important locations in the sacred space (e.g., “nave,” “sanctuary,” “ambo,” “altar,” “tabernacle”) as well as an orientation for the remaining three sessions in this series.

The Prayer Experience of Baptism A Retreat with Sister Anne McCarthy, OSBThis pre-Lenten retreat will include ritual prayer using the elements and symbols of baptism (light, water, oil, and blessing) as well as silent prayer, personal reflection and sharing. We will follow a series of spiritual exercises based on the model of St. Gertrude the Great of Helfta, who wrote on re-living sacraments as prayer experiences to inspire, initiate and transform. RSVP required by January 28th; contact Colette Desbas at [email protected]. Please bring your own lunch, as lunch will not be provided.

Language, Text, Translationwith Fr. Joel Warden, COThe history of Christian theology and worship is imbued with ideas, images and notions from foreign and ancient language worlds. Hebrew, Latin and Greek (of both “koine” and “attic” varieties!) are at the foundation of the articulation of our beliefs about God and human beings. Often, we can more fully enter into the concepts that we employ in speaking of God in explanation or worship if we explore what is at the heart of the words used and what pitfalls sometimes arise when we attempt to move from one language to another.

S, O , , – , A M

Where is the Mystery in the Mass? with Fr. Joel Warden, COTurning to a more focused examination of some of the revised English texts of the Mass, this session will flow around the appreciation of “mystery” in the celebration of the Eucharistic assembly and how the words we use help (or hinder) our entering into the mysteriousness of God.

Contemplating Tradition & Changewith Richard RandigAs we experience change happening within our common faith tradition, within the language of the liturgy, we invite you to contemplation. This rich opening up and multi-layered experience of prayer is practiced to reconcile the heart and the mind into one thing. Drawing from such mystical theologians as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and Thomas Merton, Rick will facilitate a process that actively engages both group and individual responses.

So, How’s it Going?with Fr. Joel Warden, CO & Liturgist Paul SchutzFr. Joel and Oratory friend, liturgist and Fordham grad student Paul Schutz will hold an open conversation about the revised texts after we have had an initial few weeks to live with them and use them. This concluding session will also provide us with an opportunity as a community to devise plans for further formation and future sessions of interest.

Walking the Labyrinthwith Richard RandigIt was a brisk Friday evening in early November 2007 the first time we walked our labyrinth, a donation in loving memory of parishioner Mary Ellen McDonnell. As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of this community tradition, come and unite your singular journey with others’ through the ancient spiritual mystery of the labyrinth walk. Moving inward. Centering. Moving outward. RSVP requested by February 18th; contact Richard Randig at [email protected]

A Visit Exchange with Our Lady of Lebanon, a Maronite CathedralA two-part Lenten exchange is planned with Our Lady of Lebanon, the Maronite Cathedral located in Brooklyn Heights, in an effort to compare and contrast an Eastern Catholic Rite with our own Latin tradition. To open the dialogue between the two communities, Fr. James Root, Rector of their parish will celebrate an evening liturgy while providing insights into the Maronite experience. Two weeks later, St. Boniface will return the invitation, and Fr. Anthony will help us to differentiate between these practices.

Sacred SpaceA Conversation with Rev. Dr. Clair McPherson(General Theological Seminary and Fordham University)

What makes a place sacred? Where do church buildings and worship spaces fit in our culture and in our lives? Why do we go on pilgrimages to holy places? How is our response to a sacred space influenced by its art and architecture (modern vs. traditional)? Please join us for an evening with Dr. McPherson, Episcopal priest, medievalist and theologian, who will offer some insights on these and other questions – including your own – on the topic of sacred space.

Well, you are not alone! Join us for a series of evenings of faith sharing, small group discussion and questioning in an open and safe environment. Hear from your fellow parishioners and have the opportunity to “grill the priest!” with Fr. Anthony Andreassi, CO.
