Statement from Bishop Robert P. Deeley on Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si’ “To truly understand the beauty and importance of the Holy Father’s message, I encourage everyone to read the full Encyclical, not just excerpts or selected quotes. In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls the world to examine the concept of integral ecology. This notion teaches that our understanding of God and of ourselves is connected with our relationship with each other and the natural world in which we live. Our actions and choices in life involve not only ourselves, but other human beings with whom we share the earth, which is God’s creation and our common home under his care and love. The Holy Father calls us to respect our place in the universe and to understand our nature as created by God, so that we can live in peace with one another and with respect for the resources of our earth. The Encyclical calls us to live with a consciousness not only of the need to care for the earth but the true human dignity of the person and particularly of those who are poor.”

Resources to Prepare for Upcoming Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage

In the coming weeks, the Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on the consolidated marriage cases presently before it. The Court is considering two questions: (1) whether the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires states to issue marriage licenses to two persons of the same sex and (2) whether it requires a state to recognize a “marriage” between two people of the same sex when their “marriage” was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state. In order to provide further context in advance of the Supreme Court’s decision and to encourage continued education and prayer, the USCCB has provided materials, in English and Spanish, to assist you in preparing for the upcoming decision: Bulletin Insert English: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/BulletinInsertEnglish.pdf Spanish: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/BulletinInsertSpanish.pdf Homily Resources English: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/HomilyResourcesEnglish.pdf Spanish: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/HomilyResourcesSpanish.pdf Lead Messages on Marriage Redefinition English: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/LeadMessagesEnglish.pdf Spanish: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/LeadMessagesSpanish.pdf Background (Supreme Court Marriage Cases) English: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/BackgroundEnglish.pdf Spanish: www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/BackgroundSpanish.pdf

RE: Diocesan Celebrations for Members of Consecrated Life

Bishop Deeley will be honoring members of Consecrated Life at three celebrations which will include a Mass and luncheon:

Wednesday, July 22, at Notre Dame Church in Waterville

Saturday, August 22, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, LePage Center in Lewiston

Wednesday, October 7, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Scarborough

The Masses begin at 11:00 a.m. All priests and deacons are invited to vest and celebrate at any of the Masses. Celebrants wishing to stay for the luncheon must let me know at least one week prior to each event. Parishes are encouraged to announce the Masses and invite parishioners to attend.

While these three events are the diocesan celebrations, it is suggested that all parishes offer an event, at the time of their choosing, to recognize and acknowledge the contributions that those in consecrated life have made and continue to make in the life of the parish. These events can be placed on our diocesan website by contacting the Diocesan Communications Office at (207) 773-6471 and speaking with Lois Czerniak [email protected] or Dave Guthro [email protected].

I also take this opportunity to remind you that each day at noon, members of the religious communities in our diocese recite the prayer prepared by the USCCB for this year of Consecrated Life. Please join us in prayer.

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of

perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous

witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to

make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by

calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure

the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen. Secretariat of Clergy, Consecrated Life And Vocations
