November 27th Collection $8,491
Online Giving $416 Total: $8,907
Attendance: 850
Please remember that our parish weekly collection goal is $10,000/week.

we would meet our goal!
Thank you for your ongoing generosity. We would not be able to help all the people who come to us without your continuing generosity!
Our Food Pantry tries to offer a wide variety of choices to our clients so we can use whatever you would like to donate. However, there are a few items we are in definite need of: coffee regular/decaf, carrots, peas, beets, spam, salad dressing, bread crumbs, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, cooking oil, salt. We are also in need of non food items including feminine products, paper towels, toilet paper, soap, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, laundry detergent, bleach and dish detergent.
Saint paul abbey
New Christmas Giving Tree
The Benedictine Abbey of Saint Paul, on Route 206 one mile south of Newton,
has thousands of Christmas Trees ready to
choose and cut 7 days a week from November 25th to December 23rd from
9:00am to 4:00pm
They also have the Abbey Gift Shop with many items that make
ideal Christmas gifts, including books,
Many thanks to the additional people who felt the “gentle nudge” of Father ST at Mass by participating in a very specific Advent good cause. This year, presents will not only be shared with the less fortunate families in Newton, but also with our sister church of Saint Mary in Paterson.
Such heart warming and uplifting stories about how poor families have had in tears in their eyes when gifts were shared with their children (who would not have received any if it were not for the generosity of other people) is the reason for sharing our Christmas gift giving with them this year.
Thank you for your generosity and concern!
“BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE!” (At the request of several people, I have included last week’s homily in this week’s bulletin) “Be all that you can be!” This is the motto for the United States Army and I think it could be a great motto for our Advent journey. As Saint Mother Theresa once said “We are called to be faithful not successful.” Here we are again, just four short weeks until we celebrate the Christmas season. It is not “Happy Holidays” nor do we sing “Holiday Songs” because on June 28, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant officially made Christmas a national holiday to be celebrated on December 25th each and every year. Therefore, it is politically correct to say “Merry Christmas” for it is a holiday that has been part of our American history for almost 150 years! For us Christian Catholics, Advent has been celebrated since the 5th Century. And just as Lent is 40 days to help us prepare for Easter, so Advent is 4 weeks to help us prepare for the celebration of Christmas. Not penitential like Lent, but joyful, yet serious, free spirited, yet solemn, gladly waiting yet prayerfully anticipating. God called us to be the best that we can be in the next 4 weeks. I would like to give you some very specific things you might consider over these weeks: -Smile -Smile often -Pray for our church -Pray for our country -Pray for our families and friends -Pray for our police and fire -Pray for our troops and allies -Tell those that you love, that you do -Rediscover some old friends -Make some new friends -Hope -Grow -Give -Give in -Buy some flowers and share them -Donate some of your time -Donate some of your money -Donate some of your talents -Keep a promise
-Laugh and laugh often -Reach out to someone in need -Slow down just a little bit and smell the roses -Watch a sunrise -Listen to the rain -Trust life -Have faith -Enjoy your life -Make some mistakes and learn from them -Explore the unknown -Celebrate your life and the life of someone you
love -Dedicate so much time to becoming better that
you do not have time to criticize others -Beat your swords of violence and judgmental
words into plowshares of forgiveness and peace
-Change your spears of condemnation into pruning hooks of tolerance and acceptance
-Say a prayer today -Say a prayer every day
Maybe our prayer this Advent can be:
“Help us this
day, O Lord, to serve You with
all our hearts! May we do our work justly, give help without
calling attention to ourselves, share from our substance and not from our excess gener-ously. May we please our friends and family
honorably, go to bed happy and sleep soundly. All of this for the glory and honor of Our Lord
Jesus Christ. Amen.”
Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel “So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” I hope that we are all prepared for His Second coming.
I pray that through these next 4 weeks, we will all be “The Best that We Can Be!”
2017 CHWC MISSION TRIP
Advent Christmas concert
Retirement fund for religious
We are planning our 2017 trip to the Plattsburg, NY area and we have two spots remaining. Come join this wonderful group as we go to help those less privileged than ourselves! Please call Cathy Roy for more information at 973-383-7662. The trip will be from June 25-30, 2017.
SAVE THE DATE! Father ST, Cate Pasculli and
Kelly Dachisen will present their
Annual Advent Christmas Concert here at
Saint Joseph Church Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 7:00pm.
Aging Religious need your help! Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others—educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously to today’s Second Collection (this is one of the very few second collections we have).
