After much thought

Many thanks to my brother in the priesthood, Father Michael Davitti, SX for celebrating the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday because I was too sick to actually stand at the altar. If you were at Mass this past weekend, you will appreciate the words of a visitor who said: “I knew something was wrong, because the church lacked….. ummmmm…. the usual enthusiasm that I feel when I come to Newton. And then when you did not preach, we knew something was seriously wrong.” When I woke up on Sunday morning, I knew that I had a task and obligation to attend to and that was offering the Mass for those who come each and every week to strengthen their faith. Quite honestly, it was a struggle, but, with the grace of God and good meds, I made it. Having much time to think about this situation I realize how so many people throughout the world and also right here in the United States go without Mass every week. With the closing of churches, the lack of vocations and the decline of worshipping communities, I realize how much we take for granted that Mass will always be celebrated each and every day and each and every weekend. Of course, those of us who live in the North East, where Catholics are the majority, never have known about the shortage of priests and the closing of churches, until most recently. It seems almost the norm that parishes are “yoking” (the official term which means the combining of two parishes with one pastor). If you look at places like Bayonne, Jersey City, Union City, Newark, etc. you see some national churches (e.g. Polish, Irish, Italian, et. al.) within just blocks from each other. It seems that when the immigrants came to the United States they wanted their own parish that spoke their own language. Of course, this was easy when priests were plentiful and money was no object when it came to giving to the Church. However, after many years of people moving out of these areas, the numbers were just not there and the ability to maintain huge parish churches, large rectories and adjoining parochial schools became impossible to manage.

Therefore, begrudgingly, some bishops took the first step in closing some of these uninhabited buildings and either sold them or rented them out. Of course, this did not happen without great consternation and even at times, rioting by the faithful. Nonetheless, the shrinking Catholic population in these areas did not allow for the financial ability to keep all of these churches open at once. With some dioceses actually going bankrupt from the pedophilia crisis, the times of “borrowing from Peter to pay Paul” was no longer an option, because “Peter” was broke. But all of these issues (thanks be to God) have not had such an affect on our New Jersey parishes that some of the faithful have to go without Eucharist some weekends. Therefore, I am asking you do you ever give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist and how often we take it for granted each and every week? I suppose the old adage “You never miss water until the well goes dry” could apply here. It is like losing your electricity after a storm and you realize how much you automati-cally walk into a room and flip the switch expecting there to be light. So as I continue to get better and stronger, I thank all of you, especially those who have shown your concern by word and deed and maybe this is a time for all of us to realize how blessed, fortunate and yes even “lucky” we are that we have the Mass available to us each and every day. In the coming days, maybe when you are praying to the Lord, possibly we can all say a “Thank You” for the gift of our faith and “Thank You” for the gift of the Mass that is offered for us each and every day. And maybe, you can add a small prayer that the Lord continues to send laborers into His vineyard, especially as priests to continue His Son’s command: “Do this in memory of me!”
