It has been so good to see staff and students back at school after a relaxed break, and are now ready for a busy term four. PLANNING FOR 2019 Early in Term Four we begin the process of planning for the following year. In the next few weeks we are holding the prep orientation sessions. Ensuring your child has a smooth transition to a new grade next year is an important focus in term four. Teachers will be helping to create new classes, based on each child’s needs, and also providing orientation opportunities for children to ease into their next class. Parents sometimes ask if they can request a particular teacher for their child for the coming year. Unfortunately, when parents make these requests it makes our class planning extremely difficult. Teachers put much time and effort into arranging children into appropriate groups, taking into consideration their academic, social and emotional needs. When requests for particular teachers are added to this delicate mix, difficulties arise in organising balanced classes. If you have any particular concerns about your child’s placement due to individual issues, in terms of social, emotional or academic needs, please discuss these issues with your child’s class teacher, Kerry Peake or myself. These discussions should be completed by the end of October. If after discussing your request, you need to advise us of your request formally, please put it in writing to me. I cannot guarantee that your request can be accommodated but I will inform you of the outcome by 10 December. As the number of children attending the school is crucial in our planning, early notice of student transfers is important. If you have any plans to relocate from our area and/ or enroll your children at another school, please let the office know as soon as possible. I hope everyone had a lovely break! It has been so good to see staff and students back at school after a relaxed break, and are now ready for a busy term four.

PLANNING FOR 2019

Early in Term Four we begin the process of planning for the following year. In the next few weeks we are holding the prep orientation sessions.

Ensuring your child has a smooth transition to a new grade next year is an important focus in term four. Teachers will be helping to create new classes, based on each child’s needs, and also providing orientation opportunities for children to ease into their next class.

Caring for Children – Working with Parents

Welcome to TERM 4!

It is hard to believe that it is already Term 4 and the last Term for 2018.

We have asked the question, “Where has the year gone?” a few times this week. Whilst it is quite a long Term, Term 4 is always a fun time and we always seem to fit in so much. We just know we are going to have a fantastic Term 4 It was very special to come back to Breakfast Club on Monday and see happy faces as the children returned to school after enjoying their holidays. We heard many fantastic stories of what people did during their break. We had a few birthdays. Nate turned 7 and for his birthday his family went to a muddy obstacle course called Muddy Hell. This sounds like a great deal of fun. Ella said she got very muddy and it reminded us of when we had our Mud Pie Day when I was at After School Care, for Ella (and I) were covered in mud – so much fun!! It was also Emily O.’s little brother Sebastian’s 4th birthday. Emily O. went to Phillip Island and saw the penguins. She said they were very, very cute but they were not allowed to take any photos of them. A seagull chased some of the penguins back into the sea. Adelita and Dylan went to Mount Martha with their cousins and when they were there, they saw some very interesting sculptures at a restaurant. They went to the beach a number of times and paddled in the water, but the water was too cold to swim in. Campbell had a very interesting time in Sydney when he and his family went to see Melbourne Storm play in the NRL Grand Final, and Billy Slater’s last game. Whilst the result was not what he wanted, Campbell had a marvellous time. He went to Tooronga Zoo where he rode above the zoo on the special Zoo Cable Car. Campbell rode across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on a train, went on a Sydney Harbour Ferry and went up the Sydney Tower Observation Deck. Then there was a very special meeting for Campbell (more info. a little bit later). Mitchell and his family went to the Gold Coast and had an excellent time at Dreamworld. Before the holidays, Mitchell had promised me that he would bring some souvenirs back to show me ……. and he did!! Mitchell brought 3 special photos from Dreamworld, one was of Mitchell and an 8 month old tiger, another was of Mitchell with another 8 month old tiger and one of Mitchell holding a koala. He also had a photo of the two tiger cubs – very cute. Mitchell brought a special Dreamworld Photo Pass Lanyard and a Dreamworld drink bottle. Mitchell went on many rides including the train and went to Top Golf. I went to Apollo Bay and had a fantastic time. Next to our cabin is a paddock that sometimes has sheep in. To my delight, there were over a hundred mother ewes and their baby lambs. They are so funny. The lambs often wander from their mothers and all day (and throughout the night) we could hear high pitched baas followed by low pitched baas which is the way they find each other again. The baas continued until the mother and babies met. When the lambs drink from their mothers, their tails wiggle. To see the little lambs running down the hill to their mothers was a real treat. Some of us went to the movies and saw Smallfoot and Christopher Robin. I loved the way all of the animal characters saved Christopher Robin when he was an adult after he had saved them when he was a child. As Abby said, it was a lovely caring movie. Brodie went to see Johnny English Strikes Again – he thought it was very funny. Now, the special meeting for Campbell ------- Campbell and Mitchell’s family had planned to meet in Sydney and that is exactly what they did! They spent some time together in Sydney before coming home. What a brilliant idea.

We have already started the first part of our Term 4 Project. We are making a Breakfast Club Portfolio similar to the ones I made with the children at After School Care. The children have already started to type their holiday experiences on the computer. The first to start was Campbell, who spent two mornings typing. Nate also spent a long time typing his story. A great effort by both boys!!! We have started to put these in the Portfolio as our second entry. We already have some portrait photos of the children in the book and look forward to adding more photos of our wonderful children!

Emily O. completed one of our jigsaw puzzles on Wednesday and came up with a fantastic idea for our Breakfast Club Portfolio. Emily’s idea is to make a “Puzzle Page”. When someone does a puzzle we can take a photo and put it on the Puzzle Page. That is exactly what we will do, starting with Emily’s photo – well done Emily! I wonder if we will finish our Portfolio by the end of the year?

Thank you, Janine and the Breakfast Club children

Caring for Children – Working with Parents

Community News Parents and Educators are invited to attend:

Managing Meltdowns in Preschool and Primary Aged Children Tuesday, October 16th, 2018 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM

Parents/Carers: $20 Educators: $30 Presented by Child Psychologist Raelene Dundon Okey Dokey Childhood Psychology 6A/841 Mountain Highway Bayswater VIC 3153 For parents and educators, managing a child in meltdown can be upsetting, exhausting and overwhelming for both the adult and the child involved. Understanding why meltdowns occur and what we can do to help can make a big difference to a child who is out of control and assist with achieving positive outcomes both at home and at preschool or school. This presentation will discuss the difference between tantrums and meltdowns, explore what causes meltdowns in children, describe the stages of a meltdown and how we can effectively manage a child in each stage, and discuss strategies for reducing and preventing meltdowns at home and out in the community.
