He co-founded a number of high-tech companies including Acorn Computers which spun out ARM, E-trade UK, Virata and Cambridge. As Vice President of research at Olive, he established a global network of research laboratories. In 1997, he co-founded Amadeus Capital Partners. At Amadeus he invested in CSR, Solexa, Icera, Xmos and Cambridge Broadband. In 2004 he was made a member of the government’s council for science and technology and in 2013 he was made a Disnguished Fellow of BCS, the Chartered Instute for IT. Conference hosted by: Andrew Duff is spokesman for constuonal affairs for the liberal group in the European Parliament. He is also President of the Union of the European Federalists and co-chair of the Spinelli Group of MEPs. He has previously worked for the Hansard Society for Parliamentary Government and the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust. From 1993 to 1999, Andrew was the Director of the Federal Trust for Educaon and Research, London. He was a councillor for the City of Cambridge from 1982 to 1990, and Vice President of the Liberal Democrats from 1994 to 1997. Andrew was awarded an OBE in 1997. He is a member of the EU Convenon on the Charter of Fundamental Rights from 1999 to 2000. On the eve of the new R&I programme’s launch, Science|Business organises a conference gathering key members of the European Parliament to review strengths and weaknesses of the final Horizon 2020 package and discuss what needs to be done next. The discussion with the MEPs will be followed by the first annual Science|Business lecture. This debate will be broadcast live across Europe on www.sciencebusiness.net. Maria da Graça Carvalho has been an MEP since 2009, as part of the European People’s Party. She is a member of the industry, research and energy committee, and a substitute member of the budgets committee. She is rapporteur for the Specific Programme implementing Horizon 2020.

Carvalho has been principal adviser of President Barroso in the areas of science, higher education, innovation and research policy from 2006 to 2009. She is a full professor at the Technical University of Lisbon and has 30 years experience as a researcher in the fields of energy, environment and climate change.

Christian Ehler has been an MEP since 2004 and is a member of the Bureau of the German Christian Democratic Union in the European Parliament. He is a member of the industry, research and energy, committee, as well as the subcommittee on security and defence. He is also a substitute member of the committee on foreign affairs. He is rapporteur on the rules for the participation in, and dissemination of Horizon 2020.

Since 2012, he has acted as chairman of the delegation for relations with the United States.

James EllesMember of the European Parliament

James Elles has been a member of the European Parliament since 1984. He is a member of the budgets committee. He is the founder and chairman of the Transatlantic Policy Network, as well as a co-founder of the European Internet Foundation. He was also recognised for his key role in the resignation of the Santer Commission in 1999.

Prior to his election to the Parliament, James worked as a civil servant with the European Commission, first as a Tokyo Round Trade negotiator and then as assistant to the deputy director-general of Agriculture. He received a BSc with honours in agriculture from Edinburgh University.

Waldemar Kütt is Deputy Head of cabinet of Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn and is responsible for Horizon 2020, the European Research Council and relations with the Competitiveness Council. Previously, he was Deputy Head of cabinet of Commissioner Potočnik responsible for the Framework Programme and the European Research Area Policy.

From 2006 to 2008, he coordinated the European Technology Platform activities within the Commission and the “lead market” initiative within DG Research.He joined the European Commission in 1997, being responsible for the coordination of innovation and SME policies of the life sciences directorates, including intellectual property rights aspects.
