    WHAT IS A NETWORK?

A large number of separate butinterconnected computers forms a

    network.

    Three Types:

LAN (Local Area Network) MAN(Metropolitan Area Network) WAN(Wide Area Network)

    WHAT IS INTERNET?

A collection of interconnectednetworks forms INTERNET.

The internet as we know today isactually a very large wide areanetwork (WAN) connecting computersand networks around the world. Internet makes it possible formillions of computer users to connectto one another via telephone line,

    cables and satellites.

    ORIGIN OF INTERNET

Internet was born in late 1960s.

Advanced Research ProjectAgency (ARPA) or US Department of

Defence linked togethermainframe computers to form acommunication network known as

    ARPANET

    AGENCYS MAIN OBJECTIVES

The design was built around reliabilityand redundancy so as to allowcommunication to continue betweenmajor nodes in case of attacks (nuclearattacks) or natural disaster.

To make local resource available to anycomputer (however remote) in net insuch a way that any program available to

local users can be used remotely without

    EVOLUTION OF INTERNET

    1950:Development of Computers.

    1960 & Early 1970:Packet switching networks (like

    ARPANET) were developed using

variety of protocols. ARPANET led tothe development of protocols ofinternetworking.

    Note: Internetworking is the process

    of linking collection of network)

    EVOLUTION contd

    1981:Access to ARPANET was expanded

    when National Science Foundation (NSF)

created a new high speed network.

    Objectives:To interconnect supercomputing centres

so they could access one anothersresources.

To give academic and research centres

access to one another for purpose of

    EVOLUTION contd

1982:The Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) was

standardised and concept of world wide

network of fully interconnected TCP/IPnetwork called internet was introduced.

1990:ARPANET was decommissioned sincespeed was no longer sufficient . NSFNETfully replaced ARPANET.
