Your neighbour who willrepresent YOU

Rolf Clayton the only politically Independent candidate

in the Mill Hill Ward.

Like many of my neighbours I have become increasingly annoyed by the

unwillingness of the Barnet Council to take much notice of what local residents want.

When our much-used and much-liked Gardening Centre in Daws Lane was

being considered for use as a Primary School a group of us found at least two other

sites which were better and safer for a small school than the site in Daws Lane. One

site even had a new, well-appointed but unused school building and with excellent

playing fields which the Daws Lane site lacks. Despite all this the Council was unmoved

by the wishes & suggestions of the local people who wanted to preserve something of

value to the whole community whilst not opposing the new school.

Then there was the privatisation of the Council’s services which was opposed

by a large number of local residents. But the letters and petitions from local residents

to Barnet Council were ignored. After these examples of disregard for the views of

local people I promised at a public meeting that I would stand in the next local election

in order to give local people a voice on Barnet Council - a politically independent voice

to help us to preserve and develop what is best in our part of London.

I have lived in Mill Hill for over 40 years; I work in Mill Hill as a self-employed

Consulting Chemical Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist and am also a Visiting

Lecturer at University College London. I am active in local affairs having been a member

of the Mill Hill Residents Association for most of the time I have lived here. I am a

Governor of Mill Hill County High School, am on the Barnet Citizens’ Panel, am a

member of the Mill Hill Preservation Society and am a former very active member of

Shaftesbury Harriers (our local Athletics & Cross-Country Running Club).

Until I have consulted more widely with local people, whose views will help to form my

policies, my proposals are few and simple.

+ Listen to and act on the views and wishes of local residents and local businesses.

+ Keep the parking in Mill Hill Park car park free for local people.

+ Allow 30 minutes free parking in The Broadway - not the absurd 3 minutescurrently allowed.

+ More control of parking in residential streets by commuters without imposingadditional charges on local residents for parking in the street where they live.

+ Initiate a Barnet Community energy supply utility to provide cheaper gas andelectricity for Barnet residents.

+ Much closer monitoring of (a) Capita’s performance of its contract with the Council and checkingthat the contract conforms with all legal and European requirements,

and

(b) the sub-contractors who supply services to the Council for manythousands of pounds of our council taxpayers money.

+ Reverse the cuts made by the Council in (a) funding for local voluntary groups providing adult social care, thevoluntary provision of legal advice

and (b) restore many of the cuts made in funding for local Barnet charities.

+ Restore the Council’s 25% cut in the funding for Mapledown School for disabledchildren.

+ Tighter control on planning applications to ensure they do not interfere with thequality of life in Mill Hill.

+ Make Barnet’s accounts open for inspection by the public.

+ Continued preservation of Mill Hill’s open spaces and the sports facilities for ouryounger generation.

+ Promotion of policies to support community harmony and tolerance.
