Role of Vocational Education in Development of ECD Professionals

Background of the Initiative
• Need for well trained ECD professional to work at different levels is well established
• Training programs vary for few months to two years and the eligibility also varies from SSC to graduation (For P.G. Diploma)
• There is no undergraduate degree program in ECD offered by any University
• Through the School of Vocational Education, TISS introduced a Bachelor of Vocation program in ECD in July 2015.
• It is offered thrugh a work integrated training mode.
TISS school of Vocational Education (SVE)
• Established in Dec.2011
• Received a seed grant from AICTE to incubate the National Vocational University
• As a part of this project SVE has developed 26 B.Voc. programs and 5 P.G.Diplomas and many short term programs in 19 different sectors
• Child Care and Geriatric care are part of the social vertical and received additional grant from NRTT to offer the courses at subsidised cost
TISS-SVE model of Vocational Education
Designing the B.Voc. Program in ECD• School of Human Ecology and TISS-SVE jointly organised a
consultative workshop to get suggestions for syllabus development.
• It involved different experts including academicians, representatives from NGOs, INGOs, pre school teachers from private as well as International schools .
• Based on the recommendations of the consultation, two consultants were appointed for designing the syllabus
• The syllabus was again vetted by a small group of experts (Center of Excellence)
• Detailed syllabus was developed to include- facilitaors guide and participant workbook for each course
• Identification of Hub partners in different parts of the country
Features of B.Voc in ECD
Eligibility criteria is Class XII or equivalent
Access to education and professional training for those who missed out on education opportunities.
Multiple Entry and Exit system
60% Vocational Practical and 40% Theory classes are organized as per the needs of students

• Total of 10 hubs are signed across different cities in India- Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Jorhat, Guwahati, Indore, Bhopal, Patna, Bhuvaneshwar, Kolkata.
• Some more hubs will be added in the next few months
• Total number of students as of now-159
• Course material for first 4 semesters ready
• NWWA President Mrs. Lanba has decided to start the program at 4 locations for the sailor’s wives. Mumbai and Delhi centers already started
Challenges Faced
• B.Voc being a new degree the enrolment is low
• The Skill Knowledge Providers not willing to provide stipend to the students
