• This presentation aims to show the main technical aspects and resultsrelated to WIND IMS trial activity, composed by:

1. UNI internal activity in WIND test plant (1H’09) and2. IOT RCS activity with Telecom Italia (2H’09)

both successfully executed and highlighted by means of press releases

• Main scope of these activities was: to verify IMS as convergent solution, for providing new multimedia services to test the maturity and robustness of the RCS solution to give a clear message to national market and international MNOs community of interest on RCS

RCS initiative

Network Development

RCS phase 1 frozen in December 2008 (!)

• Established in May 2007 and now supported byover 100 operators and vendors, the project wasintegrated into the GSMA work programme inAugust 2008 to develop and provide a stable andproven framework for the definition of businessmodels, interworking guidelines and technicalreference implementation based on IP MultimediaSubsystem (IMS)• Since February 2009, also WIND is part ofRCS initiative , that will allow us to have accessto interoperability test results, up-to-dateinformation about RCS activity and arrangementsof specific interoperability tests with other RCSoperators

IMS services tested in phase 1

Presence, Group List Management and IM could be com mon service enablers

Andrea Bellocchi – Network Development

• RCS (Rich Communication Suite) is a core feature set originated from profiled IMS standards focused oninterconnection and interoperability between different vendor’s client and server, composed by:

Enhanced Address Book - provides presence and capability indications, enables users to initiatecommunications including voice calls, video calls, file transfers or messaging, and allows users tointegrate multimedia elements, such as pictures of contacts.

Rich Call - enables users to exchange different types of content, such as video or photos, during a call.

Rich Messaging - expands on traditional instant messaging to simplify and unify multiple messagingmedia and provide a richer user experience

More, during the trial it has been tested the integration between RCS and a Social Network (Face book)

• On-line gaming is a wide set of multiplayer & interactive games in which it has been introduced also RCScapabilities while gaming (e.g. send IM, text chat, talk burst, see opponent’s face, etc.)

• IP centrex is an enterprise application that hosts a complete set of personal and group services as well assupport for enhanced telephony and remote offices and workers for both mobile and fixed terminals

During IMS trial phase 1 it has been set up a Social Network Aggregator that allows anRCS user to interact with other Social Community (e.g. Facebook), in which the user hasan account, and its own community of friends

• This slide describes the aggregation concept. Support of specific communityrequires a project set-up• Some communities/social networks may not allow integration with mobile communityor this can be subject to legal agreements to be set up with the mobile operator• Logos of operators are trademarks of relevant owner. Their representation in theslide is only indicative about the concept

• The Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative is an effort of a group of industry players, integrated into the GSM Association's work programme, for the rapid adoption of mobileapplications and services providing an interoperable, convergent, rich communicationexperience

RCS initiative & releases

• The main components of the RCSservices are the enhancedphonebook, enriched call andenhanced messaging, accordingthe first release RCS 1.0, focusedon mobile only. From RCS R2onwards the capabilities areextended to Broadband Access, allowing a Multi-deviceenvironment

• WIND-TI IOT is in line with latestRCS interworking guidelinesspecification defined by GSMA

• ToL execution had been performedusing TI IMS live network forContent Sharing only and TI IMS TPfor the remain Test Cases

• Some specific tests had beenadded by both operators to enrichthe IOP related test cases for RCSrelease 1 proposed by GSMA

• Due to lack of a clearly developedmarket demand, even Group Chatwas available for testing from theNetwork side, no test on GroupChat had been carried on duringIOT activity

RCS: main issues

• Availability of abundant RCS devices is key for successful deployment (still shortage of RCSclient – embedded device by major terminal vendors)

• Majority of existing RCS clients don’t cover all RCS 1.0 / 2.0 use cases and interworking withother clients/terminal cannot be applicable for each supported use case

• Need to extend IOTs among network equipment manufacturers to foster interoperability amongtheir solutions

• RCS standard allowed different interpretations at the implementation levelMore detailed specifications is required on:

 Registration

 Identity management MSRP traffic management

• Auto-provisioning (i.e. terminal detection and provisioning) should be introduced to simplifycomplexity at network and user level

• IP networking has to guarantee on NNI the reliability and the availability of RCS services, and tosecure inter operator connection

Andrea Bellocchi – Network Development

Page 22: Role of IMS for deploying new services: the WIND trialdocbox.etsi.org/Workshop/2010/201011_IMSWORKSHOP... · Role of IMS for deploying new services: the WIND trial ETSI IMS workshop

Conclusions

• The Trial activity has been concluded with very positive out come, considered also thecomplexity coming from the testing of an interoperator, multivendor, multi-client environment. The experience gained during the trial is really valuable for the number of problems found andsolved, and is extremely relevant in the view of a possible future commercial launch

• Full interoperability is a pre-requisite for a wide adoption of RCS, as walled garden approachdoes not represent a successfull solution to be adopted, particularly for mobile communities:

- subscriber is not in control of their friends choices- CSP trying to building their own communities have failed

• Device strategy is important:- not easy to control device market- subscriber ease of access is key: service discovery, accessibility, ease of use,

rewarding user experience

• Focus must be put on Social Networking, as the relevant growth and market penetrationshows. This value on the market may be intercepted by operators to boost own communitygrowth and create new revenue streams by integrating and aggregating existing InternetCommunities and Social Networks with own operator RCS community
