CHILDREN AND LIFE STYLE DISORDER…
Bronchial Asthma is such a Life Style Disorder.#
As stated by W.H.O-100–150 million of global population are
suffering from Bronchial Asthma, out of which 1/10th are
Indians and the prevalence of asthma is increasing in children.*Ayurveda considers the disease as Tamaka Shvasa and explain itin detail.Classics suggest many etiological factors due to faulty diet andlife style.Continuous and drastic change in the life style of modernman is the root for diseases like bronchial asthma.Though the line of treatment is explained in detail, along withthese treatment modalities, following of Dinacharya (dailyroutines), Ritucharya (seasonal protocols), and Shodhana therapyto maintain the health and treat the disease is found to be morepromising to reduce the disease burden. This study considers today's life style etiology and life stylemanagement for bronchial asthma.

• To evaluate the role of life style changes as
an etiological factor of childhood bronchial
asthma.
• Discussion on the scientific background of
the Ayurveda Dinacharya, Ritucharaya and
Ayurveda remedies used for bronchial
asthma.

DISCUSSION
• Ayurveda describes the Nidana Panchaka of the
diseases but many of these etiological factors are
modified in today's era and also there are some new
etiological entities exist today.
• In order to understand the disease modality in today's
era, one has to consider the changes in life style to pick
new etiological factors and to improve the
management.

GENETIC PREDISPOSITION : FACTS AND FALLACIES
There are many diseases which have inheritance. Studies
suggest that bronchial asthma also have genetic predisposition.
Environmental factors have the impact on the expression of the
genes and disease in the next generation. Hence it’s very clear that
though genetic diseases have predisposition/risk, it can be prevented
from expression with the proper care of the internal and external
environment with the proper Dinacharya and Ritucharya. Bronchial
asthma is also such disease. With proper and healthy diet, daily
routine, prevention from the triggering factors like dust, pollen etc
and doing the Ayurveda Shodhana one can prevent the expression of
the disease.

PREVENTIVE ASPECTS IN LIFE STYLE
• Nitya Sevaniya Dravya (Healthy Diet with Healthy
Diet Habits)
• Dinacharya
• Ritucharya
• Rasayana Sevana
• Role of parents
List of such Nitya Sevaniya Dravya (healthy food items) Ch. Su.6
• Purana Shali (old rice)
• Mudga (green bean)
• Saindhava lavana (Rock salt)
• Amalaki (Indian raspberry fruit)
• Yava
• Antariksha Jala (in todays context one can use purified water)
• Milk (especially cow’s milk)
• Ghee (especially cow’s milk)
• Jangala Mamsa (Meat)
• Madhu (Honey)
One can consider it as daily dietary regime to maintain the health.
DINACHARYA
All above daily routine activities are useful to maintain the normal functioning of the Vata Dosha
and prevent Pranavaha Srotorodha.
Regular food habits helps in proper digestion and ultimately boost the immune system of
children.
Early morning wake up
Evacuation of bowels (Regular toilet habits)
Brushing the teeth
Massage
Regular food timings
Regular sleep pattern
Exercise
RITUCHARYA
• Following the seasonal protocols for six seasons, viz.
Hemanta, Shishira, Vasanta, Grishma, Varsha and
Sharada.
• Especially there are increased attacks of bronchial
asthma in Cold seasons (Hemanta and Shishira) and
springs (Vasanta).
• So doing the Vamana Karma as a part of Swasthavritta
is beneficial.
RASAYANA SEVANA
• Chyavanaprasha
• Vardhamana Pippali Rasayana
• Madhunmalini Vasnta Rasa
• Agastya Haritaki Leha (Kshaudra Abhaya Prasha) *
* Ch. Su. 21
ROLE OF PARENTS IN PREVENTION OF LIFE STYLE DISORDERS
• In case of pediatric population role of parent is very important.
• As children follow their parents, parents should also follow healthy life
style.
• Parent should rear them with proper nutritional care, hygienic habits and
emotional bonding.
• Encourage them to follow the healthy life style from childhood itself i.e.
Ayurveda Dinacharya and Ritucharya for the healthy, happy and
productive life .
• Encourage for home made food, outdoor games.
• Parents should not give the burden of over expectations to their children.
• Avoid the burden of career, and stress to children.
CONCLUSIONEtiological factors for disease are
multiple but prevention is the singleway to reduce the burden. Changing lifestyle changes the food culture of humanbeing. Refrigerated food, curd, ice-creams, cold drinks, chocolates, andbakery products, junk food is found tobe main factors in disease (BronchialAsthma) etiology. Late nightsleeping, excessive use of TV, electronicmedia, faulty child rearing, increasedstress, anxiety and burden of career tochild are also life style changes that areresponsible for persistence of disease incommunity. Whatever the etiologicalfactors including the geneticpredisposition and course of diseasepathology, the Ayurveda fundamentals
of life style likeDinacharya, Ritucharya, AcharaRasayana and use of RasayanaDravyas looks promising to reduce thedisease burden. All these protocol arecost effective and easy to administereven in today’s life style, and thereforehave very crucial role to prevent the lifestyle diseases like bronchial asthma.
