Read the entire document before beginning the installation process. Take your time, take notes, and take photos whenever the need arises.

Fig. 3 - Side Case Screw

Fig. 4 - Bottom Case Screws

Step 1:

You will need to remove the screws from the sides and bottom of the case. Remove 1 screw from the two sides and 8 screws from the bottom. Be sure to make note of which screws go where and store them in zip lock or somewhere safe so they're not lost.

Fig. 5 - Back of the Case

Step 2:

Remove the screws from the back of the case. You only need to remove the screws starting with the one directly under the 'nd' of the Roland print onto the right side. 6 screws in total. You will also need to remove the plastic nuts from the 1/4" inputs. You may need to loosen the nuts using a wrench. 14mm wrench or an adjustable.

Once again be sure to make note of which screws go where and store them in zip lock or somewhere safe so they're not lost. Personally, I used separate zip lock bags for each section of the process in this guide.

Fig. 8 - Zip Tie which needs to be cut

Step 3:

Now that the case is opened locate the main board. This is the circuit board with all of the ribbon cables connected to it shown in Fig. 6. Disconnect all of the ribbon cables from the main board. Some of the connectors need to be unlocked as shown in Fig. 7 you must pull up on both sides of the connector to unlock and remove the cable. You will need to cut the zip cord on the lower left corner of the board as shown in Fig. 8. It may be a good idea to even take a picture to remember which cable goes where, but that is up to you. After removing the cables, remove the three screws holding in the main board. Then remove the main board and set it aside.

Fig. 11 - Using an Exacto Knife to remove LCD cover

Step 4:

Now you need to remove the LCD cover from the front of the case in order to access the screws which hold in the bad LCD screen. The method I use to remove the LCD cover is to use an Exacto knife and first slowly and carefully pry up one of the top corners of the cover. I then continue to slide the sharp edge along the top of the cover prying it up. You may also find that using one of the flat head mini screw drivers to also be helpful in the process. Just remember to take your time.

Fig. 12 - The LCD cover shown pried up

Step 4 continued:

As you can see in Fig. 12 the LCD cover has double back tape that runs across both the top and bottom edges. Once you pry up the top edge, it is just a simple matter of using your hand to slowly pull up the bottom edge. Remove the LCD cover and set it aside until later.

Fig. 13 - The LCD cover removed

Step 5:

As you can see in Fig. 13 the LCD cover has now been removed. The LCD itself is held in by 4 mini screws. Remove these screws using a mini phillips head screwdriver, then remove the LCD.

Fig. 16 - Left Tab Removed

Step 6:

Once the LCD has been removed as shown in Fig. 14 we then need to modify the case so that the new LCD fits properly. The red dotted lines in Fig. 14 show approximately what is recommended to be removed. To do this use the Metal Nibbler tool or a Dremel tool to first off remove the left metal tab shown on the previous page in Fig. 14 then shown in Fig. 15 and Fig. 16 the left tab has been removed. Cut the tab flush with the edge of the mounting hole.

Fig. 17 - Pencil Marks roughly indicating what to remove

Step 7:

Once you have removed the tab on the left side you then will need to modify the right side. The red dotted lines in Fig. 14 show approximately what is recommended to removed. In Fig. 17 the picture shows some rough pencil marks used to indicate what will be removed. On the next page in Fig. 18 the right side is shown with the modification completed. Notice that the bottom left tab and the bottom right tabs are now approximately the same width. Also notice all of the material is removed flush with the right side wall. Removing all of the material is not necessary and you could make the cut fit exactly to the LCD however the process is just simplified by removing the material as shown in Fig. 18. Be sure not to cut the screw holes as they are used to screw the new LCD back into place.

Fig. 20- New hole drilled for a third screw

Step 8:

After you have modified the case so that the new LCD fits and aligns properly, then screw the LCD in place using two screws as shown in Fig. 19. You should notice that two of holes do not align with the new LCD. If you want to further secure the LCD in place you will need to drill another hole or two. Personally, I only drill one new hole in the bottom right corner, I have found this is sufficient to secure and align the new LCD properly in place. The drill bit size needed is 1/16" and these small bits tend to break easy so go easy on it and don't put too much pressure down on the bit or it will snap. Since the hole is unthreaded it will be harder to screw in initially, but will still work.

Fig. 23 - LCD cover with new double back tape applied

Step 9:

Now that the new LCD is screwed in place, I suggest hooking the main board back up and doing a quick test of the LCD before closing everything up and putting the LCD cover back in place. Also, make sure everything looks correct alignment wise maybe even place the LCD cover on without having the new double sided tape exposed, just to double check how things look and if the LCD is correctly installed. Be careful and cautious when working with the machine plugged in and having live voltage running. There is the obvious potential of danger, death, shock, destruction, fire, volcanoes, etc. If you haven't done so already cut and place some strips of double sided tape on each of the corners of the LCD cover as shown in Fig. 23. Then expose the tape and align the LCD cover properly and secure it back into its original position. Put everything back together and close it all up.

Fig. 24 - Setting the LCD contrast

Step 10:

Now that the installation is finished there is one last step and that is to set the LCD contrast. To do this power up the MC-505. Once it is fully powered up you will need to hold down the shift button and press keyboard key 10. The screen should look similar to that shown in Fig. 24 above. Use the rotary dial to adjust the contrast to your liking and press enter then you are finished. Congrats! Enjoy your new fully functional LCD screen and the ability to actually be able to read the screen and use the MC-505 to its full potential.
