Thank you for your support.

s time strings together the past, the present and the future; questions can be asked of every individual, group, and organization in the community – what have these individual entities done to promote or destroy or do nothing to foster the well being of the community or environment in which they live?

Organizations private or public, group, or individual promote the well being of their community if it does not practice the zero-sum game, but acknowledges that everyone counts inspite of socio-economic, cultural and

physical differences. The opposite is the case for those who instantly or gradually destroy the well-being of their community. The third group can be likened to those in events but slept off having neither a recollection of the time nor activities of the occasion.

The past cannot be reproduced with the same experiences. However, the future through careful plans with human faces, and humane decision-making can ameliorate the activities of the future for a richer quality of life in our community. infinitieplus magazine therefore heartily says thank you for those memorable and worthy activities of 2014 such as: a Longview Chamber of Commerce/LEDCO Holiday Open Housea Longview Medical Regional Center Stars over Longviewa Habitat for Humanity's Raising the Roof Galaa Keep Longview Beautiful Death by Chocolate eventa Good Shepherd Medical Center' Gold Rush Galaa The Great Texas Balloon Racea Pine Tree ISD Foundation Pirates and Pearls Galaa Alley Festa Heart Walka Alzheimer’s Walk for the Curea Longview ISD Lamp Lightersa Martin House CAC Bags Boots and Bingoa Wunderfall, and many more.We appreciate all advertisers who without them, we cannot carry on with our

Banking With Trust

TTexas Bank & Trust was awarded Texas Family Business of

the Year award for 2014. Given by Baylor University's Institute for Family Business, the honor came to Texas Bank and Trust at the institute's recent annual banquet. In a prepared statement bank Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rogers Pope, Jr. described what the bank did to deserve this recognition.

"Helping families and communities achieve their financial goals and objectives has been a passion of our family's for over 100 years," he said. "To have our success in this endeavor recognized by our alma mater, Baylor University, and the Institute for Family Business is a great honor, and one that reinvigorates our desire to continue to give back to the communities we serve."

Texas Bank and Trust was one of approximately 200 nominees for this award in the "Large Family Business" category. It was one of just 10 such companies chosen for recognition during the 2014 banquet. Along with Rogers Pope, Jr., bank Chairman Rogers Pope, Sr. accepted the award.

"It has been our great pleasure to live, work and worship alongside our neighbors in hopes of advancing the economic prosperity of our regions," said Rogers Pope, Sr.

The Pope's family has been in the banking business since the 1900s. Rogers Pope, Senior's grandfather R.A. Motley established his family's business in 1912 when he founded the First State Bank of Overton, serving as this bank's president until his death in 1935. Fresh from Baylor University in 1960, Rogers Pope, Sr. went to work at the Overton bank. In 1969, following graduate school studies at Southern Methodist University, he moved on to his current posting at Texas Bank and Trust (back then it was

called Longview Bank and Trust.) His son Rogers Pope, Jr. joined him in 1994 after his graduation from Baylor University and Baylor Law School. Both father and son have made a habit of selflessly serving their community through nonprofit associations, which have bestowed upon them a number of honors.

Texas Bank and Trust was established in 1958, and the Texas Department of Banking presently ranks it the state's 14th-largest banking institution. This is reflected in its almost $4 billion in banking, trust and brokerage assets, 19 locations in nine counties, and 450 employees. Texas Bank and Trust exercises a committment to continue its expansion and hence further East Texas' financial security.

Now celebrating its silver anniversary, Baylor's awards program seeks to honor outstanding family business ventures who demonstrate an unselfish drive to better their communities through improving their own success while remaining sensitive to the needs of their employees and overall industries. Operating out of Baylor's Hankamer School of Business the awards program provides a platform for publicizing information on the ongoing success of significant family enterprises.

The institute's Director Bill Worthington clearly outlined the organization's mission."The Institute for Family Business and Baylor University is privilidged to honor great family businesses for the 25th consecutive year," he said. "The applicant pool provided stunning examples of the impact that firm, family and faith can have on individuals, businesses and the communities they serve."

The success Texas Bank and Trust has accomplished in this quest is further illustrated by how Texas Monthly magazine rated the bank as one of its "Best Companies to Work For in Texas."

The bank's employees reflect its dedication to bettering the community. For example, in 2013, 110 Texas Bank and Trust employees participated in more than 150 separate charitable events. In addition, Texas Bank and Trust annually contributes several hundred thousands of dollars to various community nonprofit organizations and causes.

Consequently, East Texas Review decided to interview Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rogers Pope Jr. to find out what makes Texas Bank and Trust a cut above the rest.

You recently became the CEO of Texas Bank and Trust. What does this mean to you and your bank?

Yes, in February of 2014, my father, Rogers Pope, Sr., transitioned to Chairman of Texas Bank and Trust after having served as CEO for nearly 40 years. I was named Vice Chairman and CEO of the bank, and Kevin Hood was named President and COO.

For me, it is a great privilege to have the opportunity to follow in my father’s footsteps in this role, though I fully recognize that those are very large “shoes to fill.” My goal as CEO is to continue to nurture the bank’s strong legacy that he

helped to establish by adhering to traditional banking principles of safety and soundness, while also helping our bankers transition into an era of unprecedented change and challenges within our industry.

Banking, like most industries, must adapt to ongoing technological advancements, increasing regulatory burden and evolving customer expectations, but I am confident that we have the right team in place to ensure our place as a leading community banking institution. That is the most rewarding part of my job as CEO . . . the fact that I get to lead and work with a team of great bankers and even better people.

I met a Chaplain who works for TB&T. Why does a bank need a Chaplain?

I’m so glad that you had that opportunity! We have had a partnership with Marketplace Ministries and their chaplaincy program for many years. It’s a part of our overall employee assistance program, but it goes much further than that.

Page 9: ROGERS POPE, JR. - Infinitie Plus Magazine · Longview Entrepreneurs taking a break after a daily business grind: Michael Clark and Cynde ... Rogers Pope Jr. to find out what

9inf in i t ieplus January 2015www.facebook.com/IPmagazine www.infinitieplus.com

It’s no secret that we consider ourselves a faith-based organization, and we want our staff to have access to ministers and chaplains should they have a need. Most of our folks already have a church home, and so the chaplaincy program complements that. And for those who do not have a church home, we are happy to provide a resource for them should they desire it. The chaplains provided by Marketplace Ministries have become dear friends to many among our staff, and I would highly recommend their services to any company considering such a program.

What role does faith and prayers in the workplace play in your organization?

I’ve often said that my father is one of the Godliest men I know, and the values that he has shared with our family are consistently exhibited in the workplace as well. While we certainly do not “force” our faith on anyone, most employees at TB&T know where we stand, and most embrace it as a key part of our culture.

Personally, I love the fact that several of our branches have regular devotional gatherings, and we have a bankwide prayer chain for those who wish to participate. Interestingly, we even have customers who will routinely submit prayer requests to the bank, knowing that we have an army of prayer warriors here.

That’s the sort of thing I’m talking about when I say that we have a team of great bankers and even better people. I never cease to be amazed at the quality of people we have associated with TB&T, both as employees and as customers, and that is what provides me with my greatest joy in my role as CEO.

Some of your employees have been at TB&T over 3 decades. What is the secret as to why they do not leave and go to the competition?

Every November we have a dinner celebrating staff members who have reached certain service longevity milestones with the bank. It is such a delight to be able to recognize and honor those who have spent the majority of their careers with TB&T, and their commitment to our organization and serving our customers is something we never take for granted.

I have to think that one of the key ingredients to retaining these employees lies in the institutional core values we embrace. Those core values are as follows: integrity, accountability, professionalism, mutual respect, excellence, security, loyalty and community. For an employee to stay with one organization for as long as many of ours do, they must not only share those values, but they must see our management team live out those values in a tangible way.

We recently learned that we have once again been named as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine. Part of the criteria for receiving that honor relates to the results of an employee satisfaction survey that the magazine conducts, independently and anonymously, with our employees. It gives me a great deal of pride to know that “company values” is an area in which we consistently score well, for it is my belief that if we adhere to those core values I mentioned, we will form a team of people who truly make a difference in our customers’ lives and in the communities we serve.

This is 2015, what is your forecast for Longview, East Texas and why?

It has been encouraging, of late, to read some positive news regarding our national economy and to feel that we are, as a country, on the road to recovery from the devastating financial crisis we endured in recent years. Fortunately, though, for those of us who live and work in East Texas, we were sheltered somewhat from the worst effects of that crisis, thanks, in no small part, to contributions from our still vibrant energy sector. I often say that, while the booms may not be as significant in East Texas as in other parts of the country, it’s been my experience that the busts are also not quite as bad. And as a fairly conservative community banker, that’s reassuring to me.

From all accounts, Longview and East Texas are well-poised for continued prosperity throughout the remainder of this decade and, hopefully, well beyond that. I think we are well-positioned as a transportation hub, have abundant natural resources, a strong labor force, and a diversified economy, all of which make us a very desirable locale for businesses wishing to expand or relocate.

My friend, Dr. Dale Lunsford, once said that we live in the best part of the best state of the best country in the world. I couldn’t agree more!

What role is your organization playing in the banking industry?

Texas Bank and Trust has long been an active member of our state and national trade associations, advocating for a balance of common-sense banking and consumer protection legislation and regulation. It grieves me that some of our country’s largest banks – though very few community banks – made decisions and steered customers toward some exotic financial products that ultimately played a part in the nation’s greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. And, while I know of no bank in East Texas that played a role in that, East Texas banks and East Texas banking customers have suffered as a result.

It is our intention, then, to be a part of the solution and to do what we can to help ensure a healthy and vibrant community banking system that will continue to assist consumers in achieving their financial goals and objectives.

We have a number of individuals throughout the bank who take industry involvement as seriously as they take community involvement, and several of those hold leadership roles within organizations such as the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT), the Texas Bankers Association (TBA), the

Independent Community Bankers Assocation (ICBA), and the American Bankers Association (ABA). Personally, I am honored to serve as the chairman-elect of the IBAT, and as a member of both the federal delegate board of ICBA and the Bankers Advisory Board of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors. These positions have not only allowed me to learn a great deal more about the challenges and opportunities that face our industry, but have also given me a platform from which to share the perspectives held by TB&T bankers about reforms that must be made to protect our industry for the foreseeable future.

Why did your organization decide to play this role?

Again, industry and involvement and advocacy have been important to the leaders of TB&T since our founding. We view our role as one of partnership with the customers and

communities we serve, and we firmly believe that a strong community banking system aids in building and ensuring strong communities.

How do you see this role affecting the banking industry and other entities?

It is our hope that our involvement in both industry and community development will inspire others to do likewise, and that, through our collective efforts, we will secure the health of our industry, the consumers and businesses we serve, and our local and regional economies for generations to come.

I have been blessed beyond measure to have the opportunity to live, work, worship, and raise my family in Longview and East Texas, and my greatest hope is that future generations within my family . . . and my extended “bank family” . . . will have the opportunity to do likewise.

The recent business mixer at Stone Works was like no other. Despite the cold and rainy weather, Chamber members trouped in to network with other businesses. Besides, whenever Stone Works hosts a business mixer, one should expect abundant of door prizes, delectable food and drinks to say the least.

Jane Lewis to her surprise won a portable chair. “ I am thrilled to have a new one. My kids have used up the one I had.”

Another winner was Jim King of King Photography. He won a Stone Works T-Shirt. He plans to give it to his lovely daughter Chelsea who attends Sam Houston State University.

Carol Meyer a life member of Longview Chamber of Commerce won a cap with lots of “bling bling.” “Makes me feel young again,” she commented.

Steve Hunt, David Carter and Kayla Richardson, Longview Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors won Spot Guard from Floor Medic. According to David Carter, he expected to win a door prize. “I am a winner,” he asserted. Hunt said, “I usually win for my wife. I told her I will win something for her and I won the carpet spot removal kit.”

But that is not all. There were some first timers to the Mixer. Julie Barnard was one of them. “This is my first time coming to a business mixer,” she said. “I like it because you get to meet many people in one place.”

Melissa Saunders, Longview Chamber of Commerce business development and special events director was impressed with the turnout. “A lot of people came. Good food, great location and the opportunity to network with other businesses.”

Jason Stone of Stone Works was a gracious host. “I am glad that people came to our business. It gives them the opportunity to see what we do. Not only that, they also get to network with other businesses.”

s it ever too late to plan for retirement? No, as long as you’re willing to be thrifty and extend your working years and be mindful of your individual and employer-based retirement savings options. Building a successful, comfortable retirement depends on a variety of individual factors, including where you live, how long you plan to work, your health and your other investments and assets.

The IRS recently announced an update for your options, including cost-of-living adjustments that will give many taxpayers the advantage of putting more away during 2015. Here’s a summary:

v Regular contribution limits for 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, and the federal employee Thrift Savings Plan. Increased from $17,500 (for tax year 2014) to $18,000 (for tax year 2015). The catch-up contribution limit for employees aged 50 in these plans is increased from $5,500 to $6,000. Contribution deadline: Dec. 31.

v Annual contribution limits, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA). For both traditional and Roth IRAs, the annual

By Jason Alderman

IRS Pension Update: New Limits for 2015

Icontribution limit is not subject to a cost-of-living adjustment and remains at $5,500. The over-50 catch-up contribution amount is $1,000. There are particular restrictions (http://www.irs.gov/publications/p590/index.html) based on income levels, workplace retirement plan coverage among other issues. Contribution deadline: April 15.

v Higher 2015 income phase-out levels for traditional IRA contributions. For singles covered by a workplace retirement plan, the 2015 cutoff is now increased to a modified adjusted gross income (AGI) between $61,000 and $71,000. The IRS website details other significant increases and updates in phase-out levels for married couples and singles.

v Higher 2015 income phase-out levels for Roth IRA contributions. The IRS website also updates higher phase-out levels for married and single taxpayers on its website. For married couples filing jointly, the 2015 level is now $183,000 to $193,000.

Here’s what you can do if you’re in your 50s and you haven’t yet saved much for retirement:v Get qualified financial advice. Organizations

such as the Association for Financial Counseling Planning and Education (http://members.afcpe.org/search), Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards list qualified financial advisors, and your state CPA society can suggest tax professionals in your area.

v Budget and downsize. Want to retire? Start living like a retiree while you’re still working. Most experts believe late starters (50 and over) need to put away at least 10 percent of gross income to start making headway. Create a realistic budget, trim debt and consider cheaper housing, transportation and lifestyle options.

v Take advantage of “catch-up” contribution limits. Retirement savers over the age of 50 have the option to put more away not only in traditional and Roth IRAs but also 401(k) plans – not including SIMPLE 401(k)s, 403(b) plans, SARSEP and 457(b) plans (see Annual contribution limits, IRAs above).

v Keep working…strategically. If you’re lucky, you love your work or are in a position to change careers to one with better retirement savings options. If so, consult an expert on ways to keep earning and investing effectively.

Bottom line: The government’s cost-of-living adjustments will allow you to save more for retirement in 2015, but don’t wait until then to evaluate your goals to set – or reset – your retirement planning going forward.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

As your Chamber prepares to close out another fiscal year, I reflect back over the many powerful successes we have experienced.  The purposeful activities and strategies led by the board of directors over the past several years continue to breed success after success.   In 2014, we experienced another successful InterCity trip with over 30 business and community leaders to learn best practices of how to move our community's redevelopment process forward.  The Washington DC trip last spring was powerful as well.  Our leadership team was able to visit with key agencies and elected officials on significant issues that impact our business community's ability to be successful. In June we celebrated with two of our local businesses, Baxter Clean Care and Cynergy Technology, as they were recognized by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce as two of the top 100 businesses in the country.  Most recently, it was exciting to see our organization once again recognize emerging leaders.  It truly is energizing to hear the stories and learn about how the young professionals in our community are identifying what they are passionate about as well as their commitment and willingness to be part of making a difference.

While there are many more examples to share about the intentional work of your chamber, one of the common threads that runs through each program/event is relationships.  Moving our community forward requires us to seek your guidance and utilize your personal and professional experiences.   Your input helps us remain objective so we can properly assess the organization's strengths and weaknesses. Your input ensures our ability to remain focused on what is important to you and your business.  More importantly, your

feedback helps us understand the behaviors that must be modified or enhanced so we can develop the leadership skills to prepare for the future.

We are counting on you in 2015, to help us continue to move in the right direction as we strive to achieve a stronger, more sustainable and prosperous local economy and improved quality of life in Longview. Leading Longview. People. Place. Prosperity. is the Chamber 2014 – 2016 strategic plan—to support existing businesses while creating jobs and the high quality opportunities Longview has to offer.  By leveraging our many strengths, we believe we can improve the local economy and further enhance quality of life for Longview residents.

How can you help make a difference?  The choice is your perspective.  As we prepare for 2015 there will be many opportunities for your company to be engaged in, some of which require nothing more than your nod to move forward. Other areas like our upcoming legislative trip to Austin or taking advantage of our e-learning center with over 1,000 on-line business courses and tutorials, may require a little more time and effort.  It depends on you, your perspective, and how we can help you be successful.

Sincerely,

Kelly HallPresident, Longview Chamber of Commerce

hundred years ago, no one would leave the house without a hat. Hats were everywhere: top hats, cowboy hats, stovepipe hats, even pork pie hats. Women wore elaborate hats to church, matching them to their fashionable outfits. Today, people celebrate their favorite sports teams with ball caps. And, we celebrate National Hat Day on January 15.

HOLLYWOOD -- Jared Leto, Oscar winner for "The Dallas Buyers Club," has chosen his post-Oscar film. Leto will play The Joker in the big-screen version of the 1959 comic-book series "Suicide Squad." The late Heath Ledger won an Oscar for "The Dark Knight," playing the same Joker. He'll be joined in the film by Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie.

***HBO, which lured legendary

director Martin Scorsese to television to direct five seasons of "Boardwalk Empire," now has signed Scorsese to direct an as-yet-untitled series, which he'll produce with Terence Winter and Mick Jagger. Set in the 1970s, the nine-episode series will star Bobby Cannavale, Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano and Andrew Dice Clay, and explore the drug- and sex-fueled music business as punk and disco were breaking out.

Russell Crowe will direct and star in "The Water Diviner," arriving in April. Crowe plays an Australian farmer who travels to Turkey in 1919 searching for his three sons who failed to return

after the Battle of Gallipoli. That will be followed by "Fathers and Daughters" with Aaron Paul, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Spencer and Jane Fonda. Crowe currently is filming the crime/mystery thriller "The Nice Guys" with Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer and Kim Basinger, for June 2016 release.

"Parenthood" star Dax Shepard is writing, directing and will star in a big screen reboot of the popular 1977-83 TV series "CHiPs." He'll play Jon Baker (originally played by Larry Wilcox), and Michael Pena will play "Ponch" Poncherello (originally played by Erik Estrada).

***Shortly after the untimely passing

of Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin came out publically to denounce a social-media tidal wave claiming she was suggesting she should replace Rivers on her popular "Fashion Police" show. The haters, who started those rumors, now have seen them backfire on them because Melissa Rivers, Joan's daughter, actually thought it was a great idea. Griffin has been taking

celebrities to task in her act for years and is the perfect person to head "Fashion Police," who choose the best- and worst-dressed stars on the red carpet.

***"Glee's" Jane Lynch, who rushed to

the alter three years ago to marry Dr. Lara Embry, now has discovered the downside of marriage. In addition to a $1.2 million lump-sum payment, Jane's wife is walking away from the union with half of everything, including their bank accounts ($847,485), their 401(k) ($315,079), Jane's "Glee" royalties and their $56,810 tax refund, in addition to their L.A. Yacht Club membership, country-club membership and their dog, Francis. When someone suggested to Jane that she have a pre-nup before the ceremony, she must have thought they said pre-nap!

It’s been said that a good steak needs no sauce. And truer words have never been spoken.Take Ruth’s Chris, for example. I know someone who shamelessly asked his server for

Worcestershire. They obliged him … but not before shaking their heads. That same person asked me for Worcestershire for the aged beef that I’d carefully crafted and placed before him.

STEAK 101Say goodbye to steak sauce

By Adam Holland

‘Seriously?’ I responded to his request. ‘No. You can’t have Worcestershire with this.’‘Why not?’ he responded.‘Because, I drizzled it with demi-glace.’‘But, I like Worcestershire.’

He didn’t get his Worcestershire. Nor did he receive any further invites to my special Christmas dinner. The meat was that good, as are most properly-prepared steaks.

DID YOU KNOW? A.1. was originally created for King George IV in the 1820s. The sauce was, for a long time, not labeled as steak-specific. An advertisement in the late-1940s proclaimed ‘It’s A.1. Sauce — a favorite with men who love good things to eat.’

I confess that Worcestershire was one of my guilty pleasures for a long time. I ate so much of it that my parents started buying the off brand to save money. Hell, I took a swig of it once during a kitchen raid — just before I nearly sliced off my finger with a butcher’s knife. (I didn’t need stitches, but I still have the scar. The mozzarella was totally worth it, in hindsight.) And Worcestershire, along with A.1. and Heinz 57 — a sauce that can’t decide whether it’s ‘ketchup with a kick’ or ‘steak sauce’ — still own some real estate in my pantry.

But I don’t use them as accoutrements on anything from a beef cow that hasn’t been ground.

‘Tender American steak from corn-fed cattle is one of the taste treats of the modern world. The French, Greeks, and Asians agree.’ — William Rice, author of ‘Steak Lover’s Cookbook,’ February 1997

Sure, you have your peppercorn sauces and demi-glace, but we’re talking about backyard grilling. The same stuff that stars alongside fries, baked potatoes, creamed spinach or roasted asparagus. Want to consider yourself an accomplished backyard chef? Skip the sauce.

PICK YOUR CUT. The best steak for grilling is a bone-in Ribeye. It has a more-than-adequate amount of fat, and the muscle is tender to begin with. That means, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned griller, there’s really no way to mess up this cut. New York Strip (the non-tenderloin part of the classic T-bone) is another excellent cut, albeit not as forgiving as the ribeye. The steak in the picture is a Tri-tip. It’s most often sold and served in the form of a roast. Still, the marbling is similar to the NY Strip and the flavor is fairly deep.

SEASON IT. On both sides, grind plenty of black pepper (more than you think you’d prefer) and a nice sprinkle of plain (Kosher or sea) salt. If you have it, use fish sauce instead of the salt. Soy sauce is also good in place of salt. Your choice. (I used Thai fish sauce on the pictured steak.) — Allow steak to sit for about 30-45 minutes to absorb seasoning.

THE PERFECT STEAK

A worthy steak needs no sauce … even when it’s Tri-tip.

FIRE UP THE GRILL. Whether you’re using gas, charcoal or wood, get it going. I’m not going to get all technical on you — you’ll want to cook those steaks when the grill is at its hottest. Just make sure the charcoal or wood are coals and not little raging bonfires.

COOK IT. I prefer to cook my steak to medium. There’s plenty of pink and even a little red that ends up on the plate at medium. I accomplish this at about 4 minutes per side over a hot grill (with steaks that are about 3/4-inch thick). If you want it a little more done, give it another minute, or so, on the grill.

LET IT REST. Sure, you’re hungry. Still, allow the meat to rest 3-4 minutes before you slice into it. Why? Because it’s juicier this way. Plain and simple. Besides, this gives you the chance to wrap up the sides and call everyone to the table.

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. Avoid bottled sauce. Sure, you’re accustomed to drowning it in A.1. or ketchup, but you’ve just created a masterpiece. If anyone else asks for bottled sauce, just tell them to go to Ruth’s Chris for such nonsense.
