STUDENT LEADERSHIP

It was my pleasure to visit the student leadership team last week as they completed their team building and training workshop. The highlight was meeting the families for dinner as the student’s presented their speeches to the large crowd.

Already, I have had student leaders come to me with some of their proposals to better the grounds and improve facilities, plus we have had the privilege of watching student leaders show their leadership skills and sort out some playground issues through their umpiring and organising skills. Congratulations to a great start to 2018.

SCHOOL CALENDAR

This week we have published the remaining three school terms. These dates are always ‘live’ as changes may occur; these changes will always be published to the community with as much notice as possible.

PLEASE NOTE – Easter holiday break also includes EASTER TUESDAY, as this is a sanctioned public school holiday.

CONNECT

Roebuck Primary School has become a full Connect school where the majority of communication is through this platform. By the end of this semester, almost all staff will be meeting or exceeding the minimum expectations on how Connect is used.

Mr Migliore will be holding more parent workshops on Connect after assemblies later this and next term.

Parent fundraising has historically reduced the contribution to approximately $300 per student. This amount per child per annum is therefore dependent and directly related to the effort and energy of the fundraising.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

A school’s dress code can play an important role in promoting a positive image of the school and creating a sense of identity and supports our focus on a safe and inclusive school environment.

The School Board has endorsed the following school uniform policy to reflect the school colours of maroon and black.

School shirt: the school shirt is maroon with grey trim and has a collar. It has the school

logo embroidered on the front left side.

School pants and skirts: Students wear black skirts, skorts, shorts or long pants. A

school dress is also available. The length of the shorts/skirts/skorts or dresses MUST be to the middle of the thigh.

Denim clothing: No denim clothing is allowed to be worn at school. This is a Department

of Education directive.

Headwear: All students must wear a maroon broad-brimmed hat, maroon

bucket hat (K-6) or a maroon legionnaire’s cap (K-PP) as part of the uniform. Children without these Sunsmart-compliant hats will not be permitted to play in uncovered outdoor areas.

Footwear: suitable footwear is deemed to be sandals with back straps or runners. Thongs

and roller blade shoes are not to be worn at school. Any deviation requires a medical certificate or parent note to be passed to the classroom teacher.

Jewellery: children who have their ears pierced are required to wear sleepers or studs in

the piercing whilst at school. Other jewellery that may pose a catching hazard, e.g. large neck chain, dangly earrings etc are not to be worn.

Hair: all children whose hair touches their collar must have their hair tied back.

Physical Education: Our physical education specialist teacher prefers that

students wear appropriate footwear for sporting activities and sports days.

MATHS @ HOME The goal should be to make math “real” and meaningful by

pointing it out in the world around you. That could include checking and comparing prices at the store, driving down the street counting houses, reading recipes or even measuring food or drink at the dinner table.

Keep a small measuring tape in your bag. While waiting for your order at a restaurant or waiting in line at the post office have your children measure different items on the table or in the store.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2018

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

(NAPLAN) assess literacy and numeracy skills that are essential

for every child to progress through school and life. All Year 3 and 5

Students at Roebuck Primary School will sit NAPLAN online tests

in early Term 2 2018.

NAPLAN tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. The tests also provide schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working.

NAPLAN Online uses an adaptive test design, which present

questions that better match student achievement levels and

provide more precise results for teachers and schools.

NO DOGS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

Its lovely to see our school families walking their dogs but please remember that dogs are not permitted on the school grounds whilst students are transitioning to and from school.

SCHOOL NEWS CONT...

On Wednesday, 26 February, the Student Leadership team consisting of 14 Student Councillors, 4 Faction Captains and 4 Faction Vice-Captains, attended the Broome Camp School for a massive day to develop their leadership skills.

A large portion of the day was spent on understanding why we have student leaders and what is expected of our student leaders. We talked through scenarios and brainstormed ideas for how a Student Leaders can inspire others.

The Student Leaders learned about communication skills in the Communication Circle, they focused on how to include people in a game called Finding Nemo and worked as a team in the Time Machine Challenge. We also learned to work together and support one another to make a human ladder, play Tic-Tac-Toe and constructed rafts for racing in teams.

Each student leader set a leadership goal and presented a speech about a passion to an audience of their fellow student leaders and their families. From our Yr 6 student councillors two will be selected to be our 2018 School Captains, the selection is made in consultation with staff and will be announced at the next assembly.

It was a long and tiring day but the student leaders conducted themselves admirably. We look forward to seeing what positive difference our Student Leaders can make for our school in 2018.

INDONESIAN NEWS

Selamat Datang - Welcome

I have had a very positive start to the year in teaching Indonesian to your children and look forward to lots of cultural experiences this year. I just wanted to take the opportunity to include some of the benefits of the students learning a new language.

Learning a new language enriches our children intellectually, educationally, socially and culturally.

The skills students acquire through the process of learning another language other than English helps their overall performance at school and their development in Literacy and social skills.

Many employers are now saying knowledge of other cultures and ability to speak foreign language are assets they often look for when recruiting staff. Their knowledge can indicate a person is flexible and has critical thinking skills required for problem solving. (Sharyn O’Neil, Director General of Education.)

Here are some more reasons for learning another language

Family, friends, jobs, study, travel, communication, getting in touch with your roots, culture, religion, challenge, positive mental health, to help others, and enjoyment,

Developing a more cohesive, interactive and integrated community through better linkages of communication and understanding.

Languages contribute to the strategic, economic and international development of our country and our positive global future.

The students have come up with some great answers as to why we should learn another language too and these are displayed on the Ibis 1 window for you to read.

As learning another language has become part of our school curriculum this year for grades one to six the following is a response to a common question.

Achieving literacy in ENGLISH is difficult enough for my child so shouldn’t they focus on that, rather than

learning another language?

Learning another language can enhance literacy in English. Through the study of another language students have the opportunity to compare how the two languages work and gain a better understanding of their own English language.

Learning a language can provide a new success and beginning for learners who have struggled with English (both beneficial for English and self esteem). Rather than feel as though they are struggling behind they have an opportunity to be at the same level as their peers.

In an age of new technologies, multimedia and increasing global connections, it’s important for children to know how to manage communication and transfer knowledge across languages and cultures. Learning a language supports the development of these skills.

Learners develop and enhance their skills and strategies for decoding and making meaning from words and these transfers to English.

Below are a couple of words and phrases that you may like to learn with your children at home. Please feel free to come in and visit me in the Indonesian room any time if you would like to discuss anything.

TERM 1 – NATIONAL RIDE2SCHOOL DAY 23 MARCH 2018

National Ride2School Day is held around

Australia in March every year. It provides

an opportunity for students, parents and

teachers to try riding, walking, skating or

scooting to school as well as celebrating the

regular walkers and riders.

On this day, riding and walking to school is

made normal and the entire school

community can support it. It is a chance to

celebrate on a large scale and to prove it
