Lesbian and Gay Bands of America Lesbian and Gay Bands of America (LGBA) is a voluntary, non-profit musical
organization composed of Lesbian and Gay bands from throughout the United States. Though we come from different backgrounds, our common bond is the desire to make music and share it with the communities and country in which we live and work.
Lesbian and Gay Bands of America was founded in Chicago in October, 1982. Musicians from seven bands from across the country joined together for a joint concert celebrating the event. Since then, Lesbian and Gay Bands of America has been incorporated, elected an Executive Committee and held bi-annual conferences in member cities.
In June, 1984 more than 300 musicians joined together in LGBA's first major concert at the Hollywood Bowl. September, 1985 saw the first appearance of the Lesbian and Gay Marching 8and at the Texas Pride Parade in Dallas. The Lesbian and Gay Marching Band appeared in this years Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco. At the invitation of Dr. Tom Waddell, founder of the Gay Games, Lesbian and Gay Bands of America are performing at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of Gay Games II. LGBA's next major event will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York with a concert welcoming in the "Gay Nineties" in 1990.
The goals of LGBA are: wr To provide for a national network of Lesbian and Gay band programs
in all stages of development.
wr To promote music as a medium of communication between people.
wr To improve the quality of artistic and organizational aspects of affiliated groups.
wr To stimulate public interest in the unique art of community band performance in American culture.
