"Thanks for letting me know about Bob.

He was a dear fr iend."

Donald D. King, Sr.

"Bob will be missed.

He always made me feel welcome when I first joined the club and didn't know anyone."

Steve Howery

"Bob was the second club member that I met. He always greeted me with a smile and treated my like I had been a member for years."

Chris Bower

"Bob did fantastic work for the Club for much, much longer than I have been a member. What he did was often an afterthought for me and I suspect many members as well because he was there at every meeting, manning the sign-in sheet, collecting 50-50 club money, handing out door prize tickets, handling change for the auction, and the like. Our Club is much better off because of him. He was a friend and will be greatly missed by me and all Club members."

Jim Sukup

?Bob and I were BFF?s.

We were always going to shows or club meetings together.

He was a ?straight-up? kind of guy, and always did the right thing.

I am missing him, and will miss him forever.?

A Few Words From Your President The Indianapolis Coin Club lost a long-time valued member and friend with the passing of Bob

Bettcher on May 5. His obituary appears courtesy of Shirley Brothers Mortuary herein, along with a

few personal notes from club members. I cannot say enough about Bob and how he was a real

asset to the club for a very long period of time. Bob, as you may know, manned the sign-in table at

our monthly meetings, handled the 50-50 drawing monies and tickets, handed out attendance prize

tickets, and took care of change for the auction. His work often went unnoticed UNTIL the very rare

occasion when he missed a meeting. Then it was a scramble to duplicate his efforts on short notice

and for things to flow smoothly in such circumstances. Bob was an ICC board member for quite

some time and gave his time and talent freely to the club. His service to the club was greatly

appreciated and he will be missed.

The home page of our www.indianapoliscoinclub.org web site has been updated with new snail mail

and email contact information for members and potential new members. Please take a look at our

web site and let us know if anything is unclear, out of date, needs to be corrected, or if there is

something that should be added for the benefit of our members or potential members.

I attended the Central States show along with Steve Howery and Jim Warden for an up-and-back day

last month. It appeared that the show was reasonably well-attended and there was adequate

material for purchasing a few items that I needed. We saw only a couple of other ICC members on

the bourse floor, but we could have missed some that were there but we simply did not run into. All

in all, I would call it a good show and was well worth the trip. I have not been disappointed in any of

the Central States shows I have been to, and I look forward to next year 's show. Perhaps we can

once again try to coordinate a bus trip at that time.

It is never too early to begin to think about next year 's club officers. To summarize Article III of the

ICC Constitution, "The Board of Directors shall be composed of a president, vice-president,

secretary, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, editor, an immediate past president, and six directors. The

president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms and editor shall be elected

annually. The immediate past president shall be an ex-officio position. Directors shall be elected for

two-year terms, with three directors elected in an even-numbered year, and three directors elected

in an odd-numbered year." So, 9 of the 13 Board positions are open for next year. If you would like

to run for office or would like to nominate someone to run for office, please let me know. Our

nominating committee will nominate a slate of candidates that will be announced to the club during

our October meeting, the election of officers will be conducted during our November meeting, and

the officers shall take office during our annual banquet in December. Please consider running for

office, as involvement by new board members is important for the well-being and continued

success of our club.

As mentioned in last months edition of the Planchet and at our club meeting, Jim Sukup and Chris Bower did a presentation for Mrs. Browns 5th grade class at Allisonville Elementary School. The ANA send a nice packet of material for the students including: blank penny planchet, stock certificate, ativity sheets etc. In addition we added the following: buffalo nickle, indian head cent and a world coin.

Jim started by speaking about the different denominations of paper money and coins made and what person was on each piece. The history of the mints was briefly discussed. Jim brought some paper money from his own collection to show including some large size notes and a fractional note. Chris had a display with a New Jersey colonial Nova Caesarea piece, large cent, half cent, 2 cent and a half dime. We were well received by the students and fielded a number of good questions from the class.

Each student came up after the presentation to look at the displays and ask more questions. In addition Jim presented Mrs. Brown with a buffalo nickel and an indian head penny.

Tubm an $20 Federal Reserve not e?s fut ure st i l l uncer t ain

The week of April 15 was the second anniversary of the announcement by the Obama administration?s Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, that Harriet Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the face of a revised $20 bill. Lew also announced that the $5 and $10 notes would also be revised to pay homage to icons of the women?s rights and civil rights movements. Lew said that the first of the new notes would make their appearance in 2020 on the centennial of women gaining the right to vote.

What happened? Since then, references to the revisions have been scrubbed clean from government websites with remarkable efficiency. Lew?s successor, Steven Mnuchin, told CNN last year, ?It?s not something that I?m focused on at the moment,? and his boss, Donald Trump, has expressed an affinity for Andrew Jackson, even featuring his portrait in the Oval Office. Trump has in the past called the Tubman decision an act of political correctness, and suggested that Tubman be placed on the $2 bill instead. That denomination depicts the third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson.

The announcement anniversary received litt le attention in mass media save for the Daily Beast news and opinion website, where Elisha Brown brought this information to the attention of her readers on April 19. Brown said that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing told her that ?the redesigns have not been finalized or approved for circulation. The next note set to be released is the $10 bill, and the redesign won?t enter circulation until 2026.?

Given that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing told Coin World in August 2017 that work was continuing on the development of the advanced security elements that are the reason for currency redesign, for some it seems incomprehensible that it will take the United States almost another decade to accomplish what the European Union and most major countries do in a fraction of that time.

Page 8: Robert E. Bob Bettcher Sr. - Indianapolis Coin Club · Robert E. "Bob" Bettcher Sr. 85, of McCordsville, passed away May 5, 2018. He was born October 22, 1932 in Indianapolis, to

8

Issue# 588MAY, 2018

The Beast confirmed that the current issue plan is from the Treasury Department?s Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Steering Committee, and that a new $10 bill will come out first, followed by the $50 bill, and then the $20 note. A spokesperson told Brown that the fight against counterfeiting could push the release dates back even further. That means, Brown says, ?The public may not see the Tubman $20 bill until years, even decades after the original 2020 design release date.?

The new $10 note is expected to have some sort of tactile feature intended to enable the visually impaired to determine the note?s denomination.

Apr il 16, 2018 - Minut es of t he Indianapolis Coin Club Meet ing.

Open ? President, Jim Sukup, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. 46 people were present. We met at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 2100 East 71st Street. The door prize was announced as a 1952 (Silver) Franklin Half Dollar donated by Paul Griffin.

The Secret ary?s repor t and Treasurer ?s repor t for March were approved as published in the Planchet.

Visit ors ? Our visitors were Betty Dotson and her grandson, Elijah Fhardo.

Com m it t ee repor t s ? None.

Old Business ? The Secretary once again announced that the ISNA will be needing help in December at their annual coin show.

New Business ? The President then took a poll, and only five people said they wanted to participate in renting a bus to go to the Central States coin show in Chicago. It was preliminarily thought that would not be enough to make the rental feasible. Further discussion was planned for after the ICC meeting. Jim then reported that he and Chris Bower spoke to Mrs. Brown?s 5th grade class at the Allisonville Elementary School on April 11. He felt it was a success, and the students were impressed and curious about the hobby. Kills! Donn Wray found a Double Die Obverse 1934 cent which he graded a brown Unc. in circulation. Joe Boling bought a Nazi propaganda piece and a 19th century intaglio picture of President Grant. Mark bought several Seated and Trade Dollars, most of which were counterfeit, but one was real. Dennis DeBruhl found two 1964 (90% silver) Kennedy Half Dollars. Woody Woods bought a 1923 Series Silver Certificate, which Donn Wray graded VF. Chris Bower acquired an old medal for $6 which contained a total of 9.5 ounces of 80% silver.

The Educat ional Program ??The Program was ?Obscure Foreign Coins? presented by Paul Griffin. Paul displayed several pieces from the small islands off the coast of East Africa. One of the islands was Zanzibar, a part of the British East Indies, and other islands off the coast of British East Africa and German East Africa. He gave a very informative history of the area off the coast of East Africa. It was an excellent presentation!

After the Break , the At t endance Draw ing (Door Pr ize) and the 50/50 Draw ing were held.

Auct ion ?Joe Boling ran the auction. There were about 90 lots. Assisting were Sharon Bower, Donn Wray, Jim Sukup, Steve Howery and Vinton Dove.

The meeting was Adjourned at 9:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Vinton Dove, Secretary

Of course this is just a small sampling of the lots that will be available at the meeting. Any active member is able to submit lots for the auction. Bring them the night of the meeting. If you want them to be advertised in the Planchet simply email a list of items to the editor. [email protected]

Any listed grades are the opinion of the current owner and not the Indianapolis Coin Club. Please inspect all lots before bidding to determine value. When possible we will list if a coin is in a third party grading companies holder.

PLEASE try to have correct change, or at least use smaller bills, to pay for auction items that you win. Especially troublesome are $50's and $100's which

quickly drain the change that is available. That change is personal money, and it will be greatly appreciated by the

changer and auction assistants to make giving change easier and more efficient.

* For 2018 we are continuing the 'Attendance Prize' drawing at each monthly meeting as an added incentive for all I.C.C. members to attend as many meetings as possible and to encourage new membership. Everyone attending each regular monthly meeting will receive a prize ticket when they arrive at the meeting and sign in at the greeting table. The prize each month will be a 90% silver U.S. Half Dollar (or equivalent or greater 90% silver content coin) The I.C.C. Board members and officers as well as several I.C.C. members chose to act as sponsors and donate the monthly prizes rather than funding them from our budget. You'll find the monthly

prize sponsor listed below each monthly meeting date above. You'll just have to show up to see what you may win!

Please keep this in mind each month; regardless of who is giving the monthly program and/or the topic, we owe it to that person and the membership to remain quiet and pay attention during the program. It?s important that we

respect the knowledge that is being shared with us as well as the time and effort the speaker is donating to our club. The same rules should apply to our monthly auctions; please remain quiet and pay attention. Thank you.
