5 Roadrunner Ramblings February 2019

Top DownVance BassRegion President

The only thing constant is change.

Fifty-two years ago, 16 eager Porsche owners petitioned the national Porsche Club of America and the surrounding regions, asking to incorporate the Roadrunner Region. The request was granted and our region got its start.

All of the founding members of the region could sit at one big table in a restaurant. Our region now has almost 650 members, or 40 times more than the original membership. What a change! Getting larger can be good or bad: for instance, our larger size means we have moved from PCA’s “Class III” to “Class IV”, which means that our award-winning The Ramblings is now competing against newsletters from regions as much as twice our size. (But it’s still winning awards at Parade!)

Of course, with growth and the changes it brings, we also get discomfort. We can no longer hold a meeting of the whole membership around one table. We have to wear nametags to social functions, because we can no longer remember the names of all the people we meet. Those are the results of good things – we’re a healthy, vital, growing organization – but we lose some of the cozy “small town” feel in the process.

I see dealing with these changes as our biggest challenge as we move into 2019 and forward. As our club has grown, the ways we do things have also changed. For example, last year the Drivers’ Council changed the way our autocross competitions are structured. Rather than grouping drivers by what kind of car they drive, which usually put only one or two cars in each category, we have started grouping them by experience level. This didn’t suit everyone, but

at the end of the year our participation was up by about 50%, which I would call a success by any measurement. (Although about half of the autocrossers are guests, the winners in all categories were still Porsche drivers!) And the competition is now sharp and exciting again.

Former President Mike Suttle got us started revising our bylaws to reflect the ways we are actually doing things now, and to bring them into closer agreement with the national PCA bylaws. This is a pain to do and I am very grateful to the members of the bylaws task force for undertaking the job. These changes will bring us up to the present, but I would like to see us look ahead, too, since it appears our growth will continue.

I would also like to see us develop some written policies for our finances. At present, we just look to see whether we’re losing or gaining financially, from month to month or year to year. But we have no plan for what to do with our cash surplus, how to invest it or distribute it, nor how to raise more money for the club, should we need it. As a small club, this was inconsequential; as a large club, it becomes an unaddressed shortcoming.

Like a gangly 13-year-old, our body has grown bigger than our brains can keep up with. Now, it’s time to mature into that bigger body. When you see a board member, thank them for doing this important work on behalf of all of us!

Vance Bass

The cover picture of this month’s Ramblings features the exciting new Porsche Taycan. I found a small gallery of photos of the Taycan and a video review of the driving experience with Porsche rally legend driver Walter Rohrl on prnewswire.com. These were the first pics of the Taycan that I’ve seen taken out on the open road. So, would it be fair to call the Taycan the first four door 911? The car certainly shares a profile more like its sports car cousin than the Panamera. I was glad to finally see a picture without the “suicide” door looking handles. Porsche claims it wants to roll out the Taycan later in 2019. You can see the video from Porsche newswire at rrrpca.com

The fall 2018 election for the Roadrunner region brought four new members to the board. I asked each board member and other officers to pen a brief bio for publication. This month’s Ramblings features them in their own words. Some short, some long, some in between. Volunteering for the board is a responsibility that takes a little time, but our meetings are mostly informal, and they get things done. So take a look and get to know our 2019 officers and board.

Speaking of new…a new Roadrunner region member took the time to send along a story and picture of his newly acquired Porsche Cayman. Mike Gaillor tells a nice story of growing up in the Red River area and being smitten by

the Porsche bug of the Targa variety. Thanks Mike.

The early months of the year are mostly social for the Roadrunner region. We started 2019 off with two events that have become annual gatherings for the club. Brunch at the Range in Bernalillo, and a viewing party for the Rolex 24hrs of Daytona at Craft Republic Bar and Grill. Once again our group filled the bar room at the Range with plenty of chili, coffee and members’ mid winters stories. The Daytona race day was very nice here in New Mexico but not very nice in Daytona, where Florida rains dampened the race to an almost non event. Roadrunners as always had a great time.

As is always the case, if any member has ideas for a region event feel free to talk to a board member or region official, or come to a monthly board meeting. The location is on the calendar page in the header copy.

I hope everyone enjoys the February issue of Ramblings.

Paul TeskeRetired Bank Vice President

I have been a PCA member since March 1995. In addition, I have been on the RRR Board 8 years off and on as a Member at Large. I have also been the club’s Member Chair since late 2011 just relinquishing the position this past December.

I have owned various Porsches over the past 43 years. At present, my wife and I own a 2007 997.1 Turbo coupe, a 1995 993 Carrera coupe, and a 2017 Macan.

I love putting these P-cars, through their paces on the beautiful highways of New Mexico or across the US …..especially with my driving amigos! Whether on straights, or curvy mountain roads, or track days….it is all good…..no it is the best!!!!

Additionally I enjoy seeking as much knowledge as I can about my cars and their workings, and applying that knowledge when maintaining them...being hands on with these cars is one of my passions!

I also enjoy all the many social aspects of the club, especially overnight drive outs around the southwest as well as multi-day National and Regional events. I look forward to the coming year of RRR activities, the camaraderie of the membership, and getting behind the wheel of these great cars with others who appreciate them as I do!

Vance Bass President

Vance Bass has been a Porsche fan since the 1960s, and a Porsche owner since 2013. Better late than never, but he’s making up for lost time. Currently, a 2009 911S is his daily driver. He enjoys long drives in beautiful New Mexico (and beyond) and autocross.

Jules DotyCurrently driving a ’96 993 in Arena Red, this is his third 911. His ultimate goal is to one day own a 356, preferably an A. As social media chair, he hopes to find something of interest to everyone to bring more Porsche owners together to do more things with their Porsches. He also has a terrible weakness for Porsche posters, Hot Wheels, and t-shirts.

Evelyn Watkins We joined the RRRPCA in 2012 after buying our second Porsche, a silver 2008 Carrera S. We went to see a club autocross in Belen and got hooked on the sport and opportunity to learn what Porsches (and we) are capable of in a closed-course driving environment. The 911 is still in the garage, but was joined by a red 2011 Boxster Spyder (which is incredible for

autocross) and a 2016 Cayenne diesel (which replaced the 2017 Macan we had for a year). All the Porsches are incredible to drive, but by getting involved with the club through autocross, Meet & Greets, and tours, we have met the most wonderful folks and become even more involved. Being on the Board gives the opportunity to help plan and make decisions on future club direction and activities. I want to encourage more people to provide input into what they want to see the club do and become -- whether they become very actively involved or not. Ideally, each PCA member can find at least one type activity in which to participate.

George WatkinsGrowing up in Grand Junction, CO one of our neighbors was Jesse Boyce, the owner of Jesse Boyce VW - Porsche. Jesse never minded me hanging out at the dealership, I was hooked. After many years at Fort Bragg, NC we had the opportunity to return to the Southwest in 2003. Evelyn and I joined the RRRPCA in 2012 after buying our second Porsche, a silver 2008 Carrera S. After watching a club autocross

in Belen we got hooked and started participating. Autocross has taught us a lot about car control and driving Porsches. Last year, we organized an “off highway” drive out in the Santa Fe National Forest and are planning a trip along the Quebradas National Scenic Byway for 2019. The 911 is still in the garage, but has been joined by a Guards Red 2011 Boxster Spyder (Evelyn’s car) and a 2016 Cayenne diesel (which tows my Caterham Super 7 to driving events). As the club Vice President I encourage everyone to provide input into what kind of events and activities they want to see the club have. Every PCA member should be able to find at least one event or activity to participate in. See you there!

Damian KemmDamian is a father of two grown children and husband to an amazingly patient wife Georgina. By day, Damian is an IT Account Executive, by night he is a knife maker and silversmith (you can see his work on Instagram & Facebook). Other passions involve hiking and camping with his wife and two hounds as well as archery hunting.

In 2018, AutoX became an exciting new activity - an activity that he could share with his 2014 Cayman S.

Damian has been a long time fan of German Engineering / air cooled /mid engine cars since his first ‘72 VW Beetle, then ‘69 (I remember rebuilding the engine on my apartment balcony), then his ‘83 GTI and almost a ‘72 914 2.0 - all the time reading VW &Porsche magazine.

I convinced my wife that the Cayman was a good thing...her only comments . “You are going to drive it right...not just keep it in the driveway” and “you cant give it a girl’s name”.

Now, I look forward to convincing my wife that we have room for another Porsche...after all they can keep each other company!

Marc SchwartzMy path to becoming a “car guy” has been somewhat unconventional. But here I am, in the middle of the desert with all of you, loving the twisties and everything Porsche.

And really, everything about cars. I started sketching cars when I was very young. Also planes and rocket

ships, but they don’t count, here. My first real connection to cars was through my dad – he loved Oldsmobiles (Toronado!) and Cadillacs (El Dorado!). My first personal connection was Hot Wheels. Speed, power, performance, and (later) attitude, says it all. While I was a bit too old to play with them as a kid, in art school during the late 60’s, in California, we partied a lot, played ping-pong, and raced Hot Wheels. My HW of choice at that time was a Spectraflame magenta Ferrari 312p. It’s a bit banged-up but I still have it. And when it was running, I drove my Triumph Spitfire.

My name is Marc Schwartz. I’m an independent and accomplished designer and brand builder. Very strategic and hands-on, I can support the big picture and execute at a pixel-perfect level.

I lead MobiusDesign, a value driven, virtual design boutique as Founder and Creative Director. I build and guide agile teams of designers, developers, experts and collaborators in brand strategy and design, marketing communications, social

marketing, and in consumer packaging. MobiusDesign works directly with clients and in alliance with marketing, product development and agency teams on a national basis.

After receiving my BA in Graphic Design and Visual Communications at California State University, Northridge, in 1973, I became the first student accepted into the Graduate Program in Communications Design at CSUN.

Later, as an Instructor, I taught Graphic Design and Theory, Two-dimensional Design, Typography, and Color-Theory at my alma-mater.

While I’ve worked with many local, national, and global brands over the years, as Outside Creative Partner to Mattel, I had a 20-year relationship with product development on the globally recognized Hot Wheels brand, in strategy, branding and package design. My output has impacted billions of dollars worth of Hot Wheels sales, globally (one dollar at a time). Other Mattel brands I’ve impacted are Lion King, Disney, Cars, Masters of the Universe, Last Action Hero, Toy Story, MTV, and many others. Thank you very much to all of you parents (and kids) out there.

Getting back to my being a car guy, and now a Roadrunner for that matter – every strategist, designer, writer, photographer, and stylist on the Hot Wheels brand had a cool car. My black-on-black ’84 Carrera 3.2, which I bought showroom new on August 26, 1984, was the coolest.

Still have the Carrera and I also have 200 other Porsches in my garage. They’re all Hot Wheels.

Larry KnippleI began my career in the automotive collision industry in the Chicago area over 44 years ago. I relocated to Albuquerque in 1978, and soon thereafter opened the first of three Danlar Collision automotive repair shops I currently own and operate alongside my brother in the Albuquerque metro area. The challenge of taking a vehicle that is crushed and broken, bringing it back to a safe and reliable state and satisfying the customer is what is most

rewarding, quality being first and foremost. Taking an old and forgotten classic car and bringing it back to its original state is a passion that I enjoy. Throughout my career, I have been exposed to a variety of vehicles, but no car has exceeded my appreciation of the styling and handling of Porsche.

January 2019Meet & Greet

Story by Marsha MenNe, photos by Willard MenNe

We had a great turn out for the first Meet & Greet of 2019. I was there at 10:30 am, and still wasn’t the first to arrive. Although snow to the north kept some of our folks from getting to the Bernalillo Range, 49 members did manage to make it. Late arrivals (those arriving after 11:01) were seated along the wall across from the bar, and even later arrivals had to be seated in the far corner. The Lizard Lounge was packed with Porsche people, and it became a little difficult to visit with everyone without getting in the way of the wait-staff.

As always, the food and service were great!

Willard took lots of pics. Looking at all those smiling faces is evidence of why the Roadrunner club is so much fun: it’s all about the people. Another great Meet & Greet and proof that “the more, the merrier” is true.

And Gilligan thought HE was marooned! As I rushed out the door for a New Zealand vacation right after the first of the year, I knew that I would need to compose this monthly letter during, or immediately upon my return from the trip. So I figured that I’d do a little feature story of Porsches on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. I envisioned lots of lens loving poses of locals with their cars and a backstory. I even had a title in mind- “Cars and Kiwis”. As usual the story took an unexpected turn. After covering maybe 1500 miles of roads over 14 days, I learned that seeing a Porsche in the wild in New Zealand appears to be about as rare as sighting a Kiwi Bird or maybe even a Hobbit. Sure, there were a few newer 911s around the financial district parking lots in Auckland (as well as one 912!), and several Cayenne and Macan (1) sightings in the smaller AWD oriented

cities. I even tried to give credit to a Toyota “Ionic” because it was part of a fleet, and had a “991” decal on the back window. And even the single Macan that I saw, had a license plate that read “JAG”. For a

moment I thought the owner might have been seeking comfort in an homage to New Zealand’s Mother England- despite driving a German car. But with the exception of one Cayman GTS having lots of fun- and I means LOTS OF FUN- with a fellow Audi R8 driver on a true “Porsche Road”, that was the only Porsche FUN that I saw. (Funny side note. The place

they were having this little mountain run was in Lyttleton- the ONLY town that I recall visiting that had the same name as a town in this PCA zone. Might make a good sister town to Littleton, Colorado.)

I was hoping that the wonderful roads leading down to Milford Sound might also carry a double meaning accompanied by some music from a Porsche sport exhaust. No such luck. And when I did manage to corral the owner of a Cayenne GTS in Christchurch,

I asked him “where are all the Porsches”? He told me that there were lots of them in New Zealand. I bit my tongue, choosing not to ask if they were nocturnal animals, just like the rare Kiwi Bird. He then told me that he personally owned several. I asked

if there was an issue with parts, being so remotely located. He said no problem at all, I get all my parts from Pelican or Suncoast Parts. That’s right- not Auckland, not Wellington- but Florida and California. Again, I bit my tongue to avoid commenting that both suppliers are on water in places where, just like NZ, there seem to be more boats than cars. New Zealanders are proud of the fact that there are more boats per capita, than any other country in the world. Roughly one in three families owns a boat. And to a large degree they are sailboats. Perhaps sailboats represent the competition for the dollars that would normally put the Porsche in the garage. Porsche has a history with tractors, cars, bicycles, and even Porsche Design Power boats. Maybe New Zealand would do well with Porsche sailboats.

Speaking of being along the water, please pay close attention to announcements from PCA.org, as hotel registration for the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton Florida will be opening around the time that you are reading this issue. Hope to see you there, or in your region during 2019.

Mark your calendars for our first autocross event of 2019. If you are new to the club, new to your Porsche or other favorite car, want to improve your driving technique, or simply want to enjoy your Porsche, we encourage you to register for the Autocross School on Saturday March 2, and the full Autocross on Sunday March 3.Both the Autocross School and the Autocross (aka Frostbite) will be held at Sandia Speedway, where we will set up a course with lots of interesting autocross features. Twists, turns, and slaloms all await you to improve and challenge your driving skill. Are you familiar with Autocross? It is a performance driving experience conducted in a safe environment at relative low speeds. You will not hurt your car, and more importantly you will not hurt yourself. Autocross is a lot of fun and provides small doses of an adrenaline rush that will keep you smiling for days. Come out to the school on Saturday and learn to autocross with our experienced instructors. What will happen is that you will gain additional confidence in your driving ability, learn the

limits of your car’s braking capabilities, practice correct seating, hand, feet and vision positions, as well as push the limits of your tire’s adhesion capabilities. Autocross is a also a social event and a great time to meet new club members and visit with friends. A Porsche is not required. No pickups or SUVs are allowed. Convertibles are just fine and you can run them with the top down. Restrooms are available on site, however no concessions are available. Please remember to bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic drinks. You will need a Snell rated 2005 or newer helmet. Motorcycle helmets with the Snell designation are acceptable. The club will have several loaner helmets available.Pre-registration on MotorsportReg.com is appreciated as it allows us to organize the event and obtain volunteers. Online registration will be open in February. Walk-ups will be accepted for Sunday (cash and check payments), but there will be an additional fee of $20.

Quick question. Do you insure your Porsche with Hagerty?I do. And I really do consider it a pretty good deal, considering what they charge for the mileage I put on my 911SC every year. Plus, you get a magazine that they put out, every two months. And it’s not bad, either. It’s called, wait for the drum roll, “Hagerty.” Their tag line is “For people who love cars.” And it’s edited by Larry Webster, who was last seen as editor of Road & Track. In the latest issue is a story called “The 2019 Bull Market List,” wherein Hagerty’s “valuation experts present our second annual summit of vehicles on the move.” They list 10 that are either poised to fatten someone’s cyber net worth, or are already beginning to inch up. In the article, they make a big point about how, contrary to popular wisdom, modern mass-produced cars are now collectable. Case in point? A 1997 Acura Integra Type R, with 1191 miles showing, was hammered last September at $63,800. Their premise is that, if you’re a baby boomer like me, you sat in study hall in high school dreaming about 911s and Shelby GT 350s. You were slack-jawed over the quoted stats for a 427 Cobra or a 427 Vette. When new. That’s fine. But the fact is that children of us boomers are now pushing 40. I know, my older daughter is now 36. And those who are doing well, who find themselves with some disposable income, now covet … a VTEC with an 8000-rpm redline. To us, it’s a glorified Honda Civic. To them, well, the next generation always has a way of messing with the minds of their parents. Some of the cars they list are a bit too recent for me to be comfortable. A 1996 Corvette Grand Sport, for example. Weren’t they made, like, yesterday? Same for a 2004 Subaru WRX STI. Although they make an interesting case for the Subie. It’s the one with the giant hood scoop. Bright blue

with gold BBS wheels. And coat hanger spoiler. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. 300-hp of boost and 300 pound-feet of torque. Curb weight of 3,300 lbs. They point out that the 2019 version packs virtually the same go-power, and weighs 200 pounds more. Yeah, I know. They also list a 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon. With wood cladding and a rear-facing third seat. You want BIG? Forget Suburbans and Silverados. This thing will take a 4x8 plywood sheet through a tailgate that gives you the choice of opening down or to the side. And it can tow up to 7,000 pounds. It’s the last of the road-hugging vista cruisers of old. Or so it may seem, except for the fact that, at least among the very well heeled, wagons seem to actually be making a come-back. A story ran on Bloomberg recently about how, last year, some 212,000 wagons were sold in the US. Ok, ok, that’s a sliver of total US sales. But it’s up 29% from five years ago.“The winner in the death of the car is the station wagon,” says Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Autotrader. “You’ve got the car on one end of the spectrum and the SUV on the other; the wagon sits right in between these two.”Who’s the buyer? Often, it’s the well-off iconoclast who wants to stand out from the neighbors. Witness the Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo. Is it a hatchback? A wagon? Is there a difference? The fact is that Porsche is, at least in part, responding to competitive models from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. It IS a Porsche, and it IS NOT an SUV.But I digress. Another fascinating model on the list is the 2008-9 Pontiac G8 GXP. Remember? One of Bob Lutz’s last gasps for Pontiac, and the closest thing to a four-door Corvette that GM ever made. With the 6.2-liter LS3 V-8, rated at 415-hp. And a six-speed manual. They only made 1829. Worth considering? You bet.Ok, now, I’m saving the best for last. Let’s hear it for … the original 1997-2004 Porsche Boxster! This one I

can really identify with. I owned one, a 2001 Boxster S. Silver. They say; a mid-engine Porsche for Corolla money; few cars ever made are as delightful; lots were built, so there are plenty to choose from. On the downside, it suffers from the dreaded IMS bearing disease; they are cheap, but parts and service are not; you can’t see the engine.I say; in its day, it was an immediate cult car. I added the Porsche sport exhaust, always in loud mode, the short shift kit, a K & N air filter. Doing the filter swap was interesting, like peeling an onion as you worked your way through the layers of cladding before you really did get to see the engine. My negatives? I really did hate the plastic rear window. It was virtually impossible to keep clean and scratch-free. And the rear tires lasted, what, 12,000 mi? Ok, I don’t think the rear tires on newer models last any longer. It’s a cost of ownership. But, boy, was it fun. One year we did the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit. We were living in the Northeast. As we traveled south, we rendezvoused with fellow Boxster buddies at various

spots along the way, until we all got on the Blue Ridge Parkway and, well, use your imagination. By the time we got to Blowing Rock, NC, we were at least 200+ strong. From virtually every state east of the Mississippi. I remember asking the front desk for the best route to a nearby mountaintop. The guy behind the counter told us the roads to take, but he exhorted us to think twice about it because “there are a lot of tricky curves.” We laughed and laughed … and had a blast on that route.Ahh. I’ve thought about swapping my SC for a Boxster. I know people in the club that have done it. I know I’d enjoy the HVAC. The big step up in power. The folding roof. The two trunks. And, what’s more, I could use the net profit on my car to take a nice vacation, make the down payment on a second home, invest in … what, another car on the list? No. I’ve been there. My memories are still fresh. I’ll leave it to next-gen enthusiasts, who haven’t yet experienced Boxster-mania. The joys of enjoying an appreciating asset that you can appreciate. Drive on, dude.

A lot of rain in Daytona, Florida didn’t dampen the fun too much for Roadrunners gathered to watch the Rolex 24hrs of Daytona IMSA race. For the third year the racing faithful gathered at the Craft Republic Bar and Grill for lunch and to view the end of the race. Mother Nature wasn’t so kind as the race ended under a red flag signifying a closed track.

The Porsche factory teams finished with a respectable showing, but there wasn’t much racing excitment. Nearly 30 Roadrunners were disappointed, but once again lived up to those often repeated words about people and cars. Everyone enjoyed each others company a good food and drink.

A neW roAdrunner tells his story

Story and Photos by Mike Gaillour

Hello fellow Porsche owners.I would like to introduce myself to the club. My name is Michael Gaillour and I’ve been a Porsche enthusiast for years, however this past June purchased a 2011 Cayman S….. spoiler, why did I wait so long. Being virtually a lifelong New Mexico resident I grew up in the town of Questa where our family owned and operated the Shell gas station. My youth was spent attending to mostly run of the mill autos, but occasionally a real gem would show up. I’m currently 54 are still remember the classic game of “finding the fuel access” tube on older and somewhat exotic cars that stopped into my father’s station, Mike’s Shell. Two autos particularly my favorite were the vertical wing access for a 57 Chevy as well as the challenging center fuel access for the 63 split window Corvette.Somewhere down the line, the owner of the Red River Ski Area stopped by in his 911 Targa, and the brand was seared in my heart. After finishing UNM with a Finance and Economics degree I found myself starting my career in banking. Having a few dollars at this time, I thought I would try my hand

at a kit car and purchased the fiberfab 356 bathtub Porsche kit. I’ve attached the photo of the completed project. The project’s donor car was a 1972 VW bug. The experience was challenging but ultimately unsatisfying as I wasn’t willing to invest the funds to make the “Prosch” perform as well as a real Porsche. Fast forward to this past summer. The acquisition of a slightly used 2011 Cayman S has added a nice bit of joy in my driving. The slippery slope of Porsche ownership has already happened. Since the acquisition, I’ve added 20 inch OEM Wheels as well a Fabspeed exhaust. The refinement and sensory experience of driving the Cayman is just plain fun. Early this winter I drove out and observed the last track day of the year. I was greeted by a friendly and fun atmosphere. Was even given a ride on the track which was very cool. I’ve retained my 18” wheels and tires and intend on feeling the Cayman out on one of the upcoming track days…..I look forward to meeting the club in person and look forward to a few drives with the club. Best Regards, Mike Gaillour

Tech Tips from Pedro

ONCE UPON A TIME by Pedro P. Bonilla GCR PCA

... Porsches came with a nice set of tools, which included a jack, a lug wrench and a standard or collapsible spare tire!

But those times are long gone.

In order to save weight and manufacturing costs, they did away with all of that in 2005.

But this deletion is not an exclusive Porsche move. Most car makers adopted the same policy.

You do get a can of Fix-a-Flat and an air compressor, but I wouldn’t recommend using that slime at all. It makes a mess and will cost a pretty penny to clean from the wheel.

My recommendation is to carry a tire plug kit and a 12 volt air compressor (both available at most auto part stores). Also make sure your AAA payments are up to date and don’t forget your cell phone in order to call the flat bed if you can’t or don’t want to fix the inevitable flat tire.

You may be thinking: “But wait, I don’t need a flat bed or a tire plugging kit because if Porsche didn’t include a spare tire or tools that means that my car came with run-flats, right?”

Well, you would be wrong if you assumed that.

You can install aftermarket run-flats although they are very limited in sizes and widths and are also more expensive.

If you purchased your car used and you wonder whether it has run-flats, you can check the tires themselves. They would have one of the RFT (Run Flat Tire) symbols on the sidewall.

So, should you install run-flats as your next set of tires?

First, a little more info on RFTs.

There are two basic classifications: Self Supporting Tire and Support Ring System.

Self Supporting Tires have reinforced sidewall construction that continues to support the vehicle even with total loss of pressure. This allows for continued operation up to the speed and distance specified by the manufacturer.

Page 31: ROADRUNNERRamblings...February 2019 ROADRUNNERRamblings PCA award winning newsletter 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 Region First Runner Up Ferry Porsche Award 2017 Showroom hours M-F 8:30AM

31 Roadrunner Ramblings February 2019

Support Ring Tires employ a ring of hard rubber or other structure that can support the vehicle’s weight in a complete air loss condition.

If you can find them your car’s size and you’re OK with the extra cost you may still want to consider the following:

RFTs should only be installed on cars equipped with TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) because, if you get a puncture and loose air pressure on a RFT, you may not know it due to the extra stiffness of the sidewalls. RFTs don’t flatten down when they lose air pressure, they look and drive pretty normal, but RFTs can only be run 50 - 100 miles at a max speed of 55 mph once they lose air. Then they MUST be replaced. They cannot be repaired and re-inflated.

In my opinion, the only real advantage of RFTs is that when you get a puncture, you don’t have to pull over immediately to change or fix the flat, which is good if you’re on a heavy-traffic road or dangerous otherwise and in racing, where having to pull into the pits to change a flat could cost you the race, especially if it happens on the closing laps and you have the lead. Many track tires are now available as RFTs.

More tire manufacturers a expanding their RFTs so you may be able to find a set that fits your car. Some sport cars, such as Chevrolet’s Corvette now come with RFTs standard. Maybe Porsche will follow suit.
