It’s a summertime pilgrimage to a pastoral country town in the cradle of rural Wisconsin – to a place called Elkhart Lake. Half an hour from Sheboygan and ten minutes from a lovely place called Plymouth, amid boundless farmland and meandering cows, there are somehow car transporters en route on every highway that leads to this jewel in the countryside – a sliver of American nirvana, a world apart from the state of the nation as reported on any given nightly news TV channel. The question asked by the character at the end of the classic movie, “Field of Dreams,” comes to mind: “…is this heaven?”

Tucked inside each one of the many scores of trucks and transporters en route to this idyllic locale are splendorous

race cars of every kind, color, and marque – every one a work of art, and all of them with an itchy expectation of soon racing at speed through the grassy woodlands on a special road, at the outskirts of Elkhart Lake. “Road America” is that road, a 4.048-mile paved race track that winds like a charcoal ribbon through the forests, streams and gentle hills near the town, featuring turns and curves with bent-and twisty straightaways, together in a road racing alchemy like no other.

Every year in mid-July, vintage racers, race cars and wide-ranging arrays of classic street cars with their owners, friends, and families descend upon Road America for the largest Midwest vintage racing event of the year – The HAWK, with Brian Redman. The July 2013 event offered a very special feature; 60-years of Corvette, the USA’s most celebrated sports car marque. In addition, the

event heralded historic Can-Am, and together these two automotive legends sparked high race entries, robust run groups, thunderous sounds, raw power, and throngs of passionate spectators.

After two busy days of testing and practice, Friday-Saturday qualifying and heat races launched into gear on schedule. However, a traditional Friday evening affair lightened the racing; the always-awaited procession of race cars traveling the country road from Road America to the center of Elkhart Lake. Consistent with tradition, a police escort accompanied the 300+ race cars, as they made their way to town, amid cheering local enthusiasts along side the road, and hundreds of local greeters, welcoming the field. Wives, sons, daughters, and friends accompanied the drivers in their race cars, and the outdoor evening was enriched with local Bratwurst, cheeses, and brew. Many notables were in attendance, including the likes of event namesake Brian Redman, David Hobbs, and others, to see the Nationwide Race Car Concours d’ Elegance for race cars. Truly a pinnacle vintage auto racing happening, for all who experience it.

Saturday’s highly competitive heat races spanned eleven groups, stretching from 8AM to nearly 6PM, and were run in ideal moderate summer temperatures and track conditions. This set the expectations for a banner Sunday, in every aspect.

Sunday morning evidenced a hint of weather change, almost as though early fall-like, despite the July calendar which usually brings summer heat. The racers certainly did not complain!

The day’s feature races kicked off with Group 2, Vintage Production. Denny Wilson, Lotus Super 7, immediately led the way, with veteran Alfa Romeo Duetto driver Mike Besic in hot pursuit, followed closely by Alfa Romeo GTV driver Mike Pranka, forming a threesome “front pod.” The tight-dice duo of Vic Skirmants, Porsche 356B, and Steve Walker, BMW 2002, gave chase, while a 6-car “race within a race,” consisting of Donald Eichelberger, Datsun 510, Michael Stephens, Alfa Romeo Spyder, Jeff Johnk, Austin Healey 100-6, Robert Hleb, Porsche 356, George C. Balbach, Porsche 356 roadster, and Thor Johnson, Lotus 17, swarmed the track like a cloud of angry locusts, all with parallel lap times. Splendid racing. Denny Wilson claimed 1st overall and VCP class, Mike Besic secured 2nd overall and 1st in class VDP, Mike Pranka notched 3rd overall and 1st in VBS class.

Group 9 was a mixed group of historic Formula cars. The Formula 1’s of Brian French and Craig Bennett were swapping positions like F-18 combat pilots, and exceeding 180 mph straightaway speeds. Both drivers shattered the 2-minute lap time “glass ceiling,” with French achieving a 1:53.330 in his 1997 Benetton B197, and Bennett a 1:54.088 in his 1997 Williams FW19.

With breathtaking driving from green flag to checker, Brian French took the overall and F1 win, with Craig Bennett milliseconds behind, Dan Mershon 3rd overall and 1st in FL1 class, Michael Mallinnen, Swift 016a, 1st in FL2 class; James French 1st in WSC class; Bruce Hamilton 1st in FL2 class; and Paul Morgan, Dallara IRL, 1st in INDY class.

The Group 1 Historic Can-Am feature, with over 30 entries, was presented after lunch with a rendition of the national anthem, while cars were staged on the pre-grid in the 1970s tradition. There is just nothing quite like the dynamic visual presence and ground-pounding big block power of a grid full of Can-Am race cars roaring in unison! Craig Bennett, 1974 Shadow DN4, and Jim Pace, 1968 McLaren M6B, exploded with power at the green flag, shaking the starter’s tower, with Roger Williams, 1971 McLaren M8 E/F, in close pursuit. Toby Bean’s 1969 Lola T70 Mk IIIB and Rick Knoop’s 1972 McLaren M8F followed, with Ed Swart, 1972 McLaren 8FP, and Robert Ryan, 1968 McLaren M6B, close behind. Bennett, driving his nearly 1000hp Shadow to perfection, finished first overall while Pace kept him in sight, taking

second overall and first in the SB class. Bean and Knoop raced closely throughout, as did Swart and Ryan. Meanwhile, Tom Simpson, 1966 McKee Mk 6, and Norm Cowdry, 1967 McKee Mk 7/10, had a great race for TF class honors and finished in that order. The Can-Am cars of 1966-1974 running on Road America circuit, racing hammer-and-tong, provided a great attraction for spectators. What a sight and sound!

The Group 4 Classic Monoposto classes were dominated by the Brabham Formula B’s of Bruce Hamilton, Rick Balsley, and Joel Quadracci, respectively – all of whom posted nearly identical lap times repeatedly, with Balsley the quickest by a whisker.

The Group 11 Historic Grand Prix/Formula 5000 contingent was a display of unbridled speed, initially led by the scorching duo of James King, March 761 F1, and Duncan Dayton in his iconic Lotus 79 F1 John Player

Road America Celebrates the Legendary Corvette

Like brats and cheese, Corvettes are part of Road In the early days, the track was a favorite destination for Chevrolet executives to stage sneak previews of upcoming models and to develop high-performance packages for production models. Road America has long been a battleground for generations of Corvette road racers, from the days of the original solid-axle Corvettes, Sting Rays, and Grand Sports to today’s championship-winning Corvettes campaigned in the USRA.

Road America figures prominently in Corvette’s racing history. Bill Mitchell, GM’s vice president of design, was an avid racer who fielded the original Sting Ray driven by John Fitch and Dick Thompson. Mitchell also chose Road America to preview his Mako Shark concept car. Augie Pabst and Jim Jeffords excelled in

the early 1960s with their Chevy-powered machines. The lightweight Grand Sport Corvette created by Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov rumbled through Road America’s rolling hills with racing luminaries Roger Penske, Jim Hall and Hap Sharp sharing the driving chores. Chevrolet racers who have left their mark at Road America include Tony DeLorenzo,

Jerry Thompson, John Greenwood, John Heinricy, Ron Fellows, and many more.

“We’re honored that Road America has played a key role in Corvette’s racing heritage from the track’s opening in 1955 to today,” said George Bruggenthies, Road America president and general manager. “We’re excited to celebrate this significant anniversary of Corvette.”

Special. After what appeared to be a brief off-track excursion of these two warriors, they slotted in to 3rd and 4th places respectively, behind the fire breathing F5000 cars of Paul Wilson, March 73A, and Rick Parsons, Lola T-332. A truly spectacular race, throughout the grid. Every car and every driver were nothing less than stellar.

The marque feature of the race, Group 7, commemorated the 60th Anniversary

of Corvette with a big entry of 40 cars. Mechanical issues, and also light afternoon mist, kept several cars off of the track on Sunday afternoon. Nevertheless, the race was a thunderous display of widely varied Corvettes from five decades, charging the Road America course to etch the name “Corvette” for the ages! David Roberts won 1st overall and class A, Jody O’Donnell commanded 3rd place overall, and 1st in class E, Todd Zimmer iced 4th overall and class D, and Joe Hoffman earned class G.

The huge 41-car GRoup 5 field was somewhat reduced for Sunday due to a combination of Saturday mechanicals and

Sunday track moisture. It was a kaleidoscopic presentation of mid-sized sports racers and super sleek formula cars, mostly 2-litre and all laser-quick. Denny Baker in his blood red Ralt RT1 led the field, closely eclipsed by Jeff Miller in his Lola T-496, and challenged by Duncan Dayton in his Chevron B23. Sparks flew from feverish dices throughout the field, with Danny Baker winning 1st overall and 1st in HFB class, Jeff Miller 2nd overall and 1st

in HBSR class, Joe Hish snagging HFA class 1st place Shelby Mershon taking GTPL class.

GRoup 8, Historic Production, found itself squarely in the mist – literally. The unusual summer sprinkle was becoming a light rain at the start, creating tiptoe driving to avoid wholesale spins from dry-tire cars. Several DNS’ resulted, however the remaining large field of 26-cars soldiered forward, with Todd Treffert leading from start to finish in his

Porsche 911 RS, David MacNeil and Tom Martin arm wrestling for 2nd, and a shockingly quick Kent Prather cementing 4th overall in his 1962 MGA!

Due to steady rainfall, the Group 6 Historic Production grid sported only a few cars, with Brian Kennedy, Shelby GT350 Mustang, and Pete Stolz, Porsche 911 RSR, silhouetting each other while drifting high speed turns in the wet, and swapping rooster tails. Despite only five cars, this race was a joy to behold, as these stalwarts braved slippery conditions and hampered visibility to run an intensely fought, beautifully driven race.

Group 3 also faced a near-torrent of rain, thus only five starters from an original field of 45. Bob Bramlage, in his nimble Ginetta commanded the lead, with John Daniels, Sunbeam Tiger, keeping pace. These drivers, as with those of Group 6, exhibited dedication and determination to weather toughening conditions throughout their 30-minute race. Kudos to Bob Bramlage, John Daniels, Lorrie-Ann Fisher, Dan L’Heureux, and Tony DeLorenzo.

Group 10, Modern Production and GT, capped off the 2013 HAWK, once again with a small handful of starters from originally 41 scheduled, and the winner was the 2002 Porsche 996TT driven by James Stanislaw. Although rain dominated this group, again – hats-off to the few that hazarded the downpour.

2013’s The Hawk at Road America had everything – weather from perfect to challenging,

the best-of-the-best in vintage racing, cars, and concours, and above all the people: racers, support personnel, spectators, track and pit management. A truly wonderful event!

Can-Am Cars and Road America: A perfect Match

– story by Dan Davis

The powerful, fast, awesome, innovative Historic Can-Am Cars of 1966-1974 have have been exciting fans at Road America’s July vintage races annually since 1992. The groundshaking roar of dozens of winged, sleek Can-Am cars – each with 800-1200 hp – is a vivid, aural trip back to a golden age of American road racing without rules.

That excitement first began when these cars – the fastest and most powerful of their day – first appeared at Road America in 1967, during the second year of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup Series.

The cars from the greatest teams – among them McLaren, Lola, Chaparral, March, Porsche, and Ferrari – were driven by the greatest drivers: Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren, Jim Hall, John Surtees, Mark Donohue, Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti. They set lap records at great circuits: Road

America, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, and Riverside.

The Historic Can-Am Association was formed in 1987 as the Can-Am Car Registry. The first Historic Can-Am feature was held with SVRA at Watkins Glen in 1990. Since then, the HCAA has sanctioned historic Can-Am feature races at vintage and contemporary racing weekends on circuits including Watkins Glen International, Road Atlanta, Montréal (with F-1), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Sonoma Raceway and Auto Club Speedway. These events always include the full festival

of pre-event assembly on the front straight or in the hot pits; national anthems of the U.S. and Canada; well-managed, safe, 30-minute races; post-race trophy ceremony, with class and special awards presented and all the entrants assembled at the podium. Some of the past events have been recorded on DVDs.

In the coming years, the HCAA Historic Can-Am Car Feature Races will be held at great road racing circuits across North America. A big celebration to honor the 50th anniversary of the series is planned for 2016.
