Reductions + Reserves = Response to State Revenue Shortfall by Dr. Margaret Fostiak, Superintendent

The Byron School District Board of Education recently voted to make approximately $450,000 in reductions to offset the state’s revenue shortfall. By June 30, 2010, we expect that shortfall to amount to an estimated $600,000. With financial conditions in Illinois continuing to deteriorate, we anticipate that our revenue shortfall for next year will be much worse. The chart below illustrates our current situation.

State Funding Amount Due Byron CUSD No. 226

Amount Received as of 03/25/10

General State Aid $ 475,631.52 $ 317,087.64 Special Education Categoricals $ 487,918.36 $ 118,980.16 Transportation Categoricals $ 181,330.52 $ 46,442.98 Formula/Block Grants $ 129,587.00 $ 19,346.00

Total $ 1,274,467.40 $ 501,856.78

The school district will be making personnel, program, and supply reductions to respond to this lack of revenue from the state. We will also be dipping into our Education Fund reserves to weather the state’s financial storm. For more information regarding the district’s reductions, please visit our website at www.byron226.org.

Principal Voiles congratulating JeffFlater on being chosen "Class 1A/2ADirector of the Year from the IllinoisAthletic Directors Association.

Mary Morgan third and fourth grade students celebrated our country's her-

itage at their music concert on March 23rd. The concert, held in the

Byron Middle School Theater, played to a full house and paid respect to

local servicemen and women. Music teachers Craig Deets and Pamela

Bucey directed the students as they sang such patriotic songs as God Bless

America and The Star Spangled Banner. Fourth grade students narrated

the show, giving a brief history of our country, and the audience was treat-

ed with solo performances. As a backdrop on the stage, photos of past

and present local heroes were spotlighted in an interactive slide show

which was created by Mr. Deets.
