What is scaling?

It is a procedure ofcleaning teeth per-formed by a dentistusing a device to re-move tartar andstains from the teeth.

Why do I need it?

Regular manualbrushing sometimesis ineffective andleaves micro debrison the tooth surfacewhich allows tartarto build up within thegums and on the toothover a period of time.Scaling can help re-move tartar stuck be-neath the gumswhich is not possiblemanually. Hence, ascaling appointmentonce or twice a year isrecommended. What will happen if I don’t

get scaling?

Not getting scal-ing done by a dentistcould cause tartarbuild up around yourteeth. Overtime, thetartar allows bacteriato grow and form col-onies around it. Thiscauses redness of thegums and bleedingfrom gums called gin-givitis. If neglectedfurther, the infectionin the gums proceedsto the bone support-ing the teeth calledperiodontitis.

Do teeth become loose

after scaling?

NO. Scaling doesnot make teeth loose, loss of bone does. As Isaid earlier, neglect-ing your oral hygieneand allowing the in-fection to spread

TOOTH BE TOLD

To scale ornot to scale?

causes loss of bone. While the bone is lost, the tartar that envel-ops the tooth keeps itfirm and steady. Assoon as this tartar isremoved, the teeth be-come loose proving lossof bone due to pro-longed disease under-neath. In few cases, this mobility may bereversible providedthere is still adequatebone support for thetooth. The scaling pro-cedure by itself is notresponsible for looseteeth! Will scaling make my teeth

sensitive?

TEMPORARILY.Some amount of sensi-tivity to cold beverag-

es may be present fora brief period after ascaling procedure. Butit is reversed overtime. Scaling can alsounearth tooth decaynecessitating filling totreat the resultant sen-sitivity. In cases whenbone is lost, a part ofthe root becomes ex-posed to the oral envi-ronment. Unlike thewhite part of our teethwhich are covered bystrong enamel, the rootlacks enamel since it isideally covered by boneand gums. Exposure ofthe root following re-moval of tartar cancause sensitivitywhich can be managed

with desensitizingtoothpastes.

Does scaling cause

bleeding?

Before I answerthis for you, I want toremind you that scal-ing is needed whentartar accumulatesaround the teeth. Themillions of bacteriaresiding in the tartarattack the gumsround the clock mak-ing them weak andfriable. Widen tax base

In the early 90’s our country made remarkable strides in eco-nomic growth with higher exports and industrial output. Unfortu-nately, the same development process could not continue for longas there was overall economic recession and the revenue fell farshort of expenditure. Today, the statistics of industrial output andeconomic growth is quite disheartening. The government in itsbid to contain deficits and carry out development process findsraising the tax rates of the introduction of new taxes as the easi-est way out.

However, frequent and disproportionate hikes in tax rates notonly put an additional burden on the masses but also encouragetax theft and evasion. It should be realised that the hikes can bemade more acceptable to the people if they are done in smallproportions. Similarly, after paying huge taxes, citizens have ev-ery right to know where the money is spent. Consumers definite-ly will not be happy to pay the increasing taxes if they continue toface problems and poor quality services.

While it is true that it is absolutely necessary to generate moreand more number of tax payers but practically things are differ-ent. High rates of tax are generating a feeling of burden in themasses. Every common man shells out his maximum income tothe government by way of taxes. No one can escape the tax trau-ma. Because of high tax rates, people are either reluctant to payor are manipulating and concealing true income to save on taxes. They are able to do this because of loopholes in the policies. As aresult, the tax base of our country and the state is not widening atthe pace at which it should have grown.

To increase the revenue, government should try to widen thetax base and this would be possible only when the tax rates aremade reasonable. This will automatically generate voluntary taxpayers. Apart from this, stringent policy measures should be madeand adopted to prevent tax evasion. Methods of calculation oftaxes should be simplified so that there is least possibility of ma-nipulation and evasion of taxes. With simple rules and reason-able rate of taxes, the government will be able to widen the taxnetwork, which will ultimately result in larger revenue and fasterdevelopment process as a whole.

Learn child psychology during pandemic

To all parents andeven grandparents, aswell as teachers, it istesting time duringthe pandemic and it istime to teach childrenpsychology as thelockdown is going tocontinue for manymore months and thechildren will have tosit at home and studythrough virtuallearning. Hereare some unbe-lievably simpleparenting ideasthat work.

The childrenneed a minimumof eight touchesduring a day tofeel connected toa parent. Andthis is possible atthe time of coronavi-rus as both parents sitat home under theguise of work fromhome and the childrenget the utmost care. Ifthey’re going througha particularly chal-lenging time due topressure of portions tobe covered and theneed to adjust to thevirtual learning froma very young age. Thepersonal touch doesn’thave to be a big deal;it could be thestraightening of acollar, a pat on theshoulder or a simplehug. Parents getpersonal attention andhave a better under-standing.

It is quite impera-tive that the childrenneed one meaningfuleye-to-eye conversa-tion with a parent. Itis especially impor-tant for babies tohave that eye contact, but children of allages need us to slowdown and look themin the eyes. There arenine minutes duringthe day that have thegreatest impact on achild: The first three

minutes right afterthey wake up. Thethree minutes afterthey finish thestudies in virtualclasses and the lastthree minutes of theday before they go tobed.

We need to makethose momentsspecial and help ourchildren feel loved. These are simple, right? Nothing reallyearth-shattering here.So we can try all thisduring the spare timeand that would helpto know each other ina better way. Theclose approach willhave a better under-

standing in thecrucial period of theircareer. Whenever youfeel like scolding orbeating your child, take a deep breath, orcount 1-10 and thenact. Let’s ask them tostudy their favoritesubject on their own..Do not prepare themfor one exam withoutstudying at all. Letus see how he per-forms without yourbacking.

Remember whatour kids are learningin 5th std is taught to7th std abroad. Letskeep our kids out ofunwanted competi-tion. It is observedthat 80% of what kidsare learning ,won’t beuseful to them infuture. Our kids can

really afford to dowhatever they want todo in future. Higherdegrees do not guaran-tee success andhappiness. Not all thehighly educated peopledo well professionally. And not all who dowell professionally arethe happiest ones.

Keep the kids inhigh spirits and helpthem enjoy their sparetime for better useand don’t spoil theirchildhood. Supportthem and let them bewhat they want to be.

The closure ofschools and universi-ties over the last fourmonths has highlight-

ed the inequities inthe Indian educationsystem, with somestudents able tocontinue the learningprocess via onlinetools, while othersbeing left out. TheNational EducationPolicy (NEP), ap-proved by the Cabinet, has a new section ondigital education toensure equitable useof technology. Whenwe introduce technolo-gy, we must ensurethat no child is leftbehind and there is aneed to inculcateknowledge. A dedicat-ed unit to coordinatedigital infrastructure, content and capacitybuilding will be theultimate solution tothe problem. Teachersneed to get training inonline educationalmethods relevant tothe Indian situation inorder to help bridgethe digital divide.Integration of technol-ogy is the need of thehour to improveclassroom processes. There lies the realsuccess of implemen-tation.
