RESEDA CENTENNIAL COMMEMO-RATION

Tuesday morning, September 5th, the Los An-geles City Council recognized the 100th birth-day of Reseda with an official ceremony in Council chambers at LA City Hall. Councilman Dennis P. Zine, flanked by over 40 Reseda stakeholders, led a presentation that was over-flowing in the expression of pride for the deep-ly rooted Valley neighborhood. U.S.A. Olympi-an and Cleveland High School graduate, Jessica Cosby and local artist Susan Rios were special guests for the event and offered inspiring words to the Councilmembers and staffers and packed chamber hall. Among the highlights of the ceremony were a short film about Reseda compiled by RNC boardmember Hank Truxillo, an a capella rendition of those couple of fa-mous Tom Petty "Freefallin'" bars by Coun-cilmembers Joe Buscaino and Paul Koretz, and a collectible 100 year celebration pin given to the attendees by Revitalize Reseda.

RESEDA SITE FOR CONGRESSION-AL DEBATE

ONEgeneration’s Advisory Council is sponsor-ing a debate between the two Democratic candidates in the hotly contested 30th Congres-sional District on Wednesday, October 10th, from 3:00PM to 4:30PM. The debate will take

place in the auditorium of the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center at 18255 Victory Blvd., Reseda.

Both Congressman Howard Berman and Con-gressman Brad Sherman are vying for this seat which was created by the Citizens Redistricting Commission as part of the decade redistricting process. The League of Women Voters will be moderating the debate and it is open to the public. Co-sponsoring along with ONEgenera-tion are the League of Women Voters, Ameri-can Association of University Women, SFV Branch; AARP, and the Los Angeles Aging Advo-cacy Coalition. This is an opportunity for con-stituents of the 30th CD to hear directly from the candidates regarding their stands on the important issues of the day. In addition, voter registration will be available for those individu-als who have not yet registered.

The following Sunday, October 14th, ONEgener-ation’s Advisory Council will be sponsoring a Ballot Measures Forum at the same address from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. The League of Wom-en Voters will provide a non partisan presenta-tion on the eleven propositions and initiatives that appear on the November ballot. The pros and cons of each measure will be discussed in order to educate the public on the specifics of each. Be sure to bring your State ballot pam-phlet so you can follow along, as such measures as the Governor’s tax proposal, re-peal of the death penalty, amending the three strikes law, and the regulation of genetically engineered foods are discussed.

No RSVP is required. For further information, contact Larry Lisonbee at 818-705-2345.

BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHOPRESEDA CARDS NOW AVAIL-ABLE

New Cards are being distributed throughout the community and are now available at any Reseda Neighborhood Council Meeting as well as participating businesses. The first printed SHOPRESEDA Cards were given out over the past year and have made a positive difference to some of the 170 businesses that are partici-pating in the SHOPRESEDA and the Spend $25 on the 25th in Reseda programs. The idea of making the choice to shop local is a pervasive ideal Reseda is increasingly embracing.

YOU can make this program grow by asking every business in Reseda that you can if they take the card and offer the discount. Show your card at any Reseda Business and claim your discount or kindly recommend that they participate too, if they don’t already. Word of mouth is the key!

It’s up to all of us to make this program a re-sounding success that benefits both the con-sumer and the business.

SHOP SMALL SATURDAY

Everyone knows about Black Friday, the huge shopping day on the Friday after Thanksgiving in which the huge retailers ask you to get up really early or skip sleep all together so that you can fight the huge crowds that descend on the malls to get the bargains that they offer

Last year Reseda participated in Shop Small Saturday sponsored by American Express.

This year plans are being laid to once again encourage the mall-less Reseda Shoppers to save some or all of their shopping for the retail establishments in our community.

If you own a business in Reseda that needs to attract the holiday shoppers and keep them in our community, think of a special price or dis-count that says Shop HERE to the community and become involved in the SHOPRESEDA CARD program. About 170 businesses in Rese-da currently offer this service to the stakehold-ers in Reseda. Call 818-419-2513 or email [email protected]

As a business you can also get prepared by checking out www.shopsmall.com and making November 24 Shop Small Saturday at your business.

WELCOME NEW BUSINESSES

Each month, we welcome new businesses to our Reseda business community. They help to provide more jobs and increase our local eco-nomic activity.

Be sure to say hello and welcome the following businesses to our community: Bright Now! Dental 19361 Saticoy St. Cash It Quick 18503 Victory Blvd. Fresh t Boba & Smoothies 7233 Reseda Blvd. K Max Transmissions 6933H Reseda Blvd. Kim Son Chinese Restaurant and Vietnamese Food 7215 Reseda Blvd. Mobil Gas Station 8247 Reseda Blvd. SGN Cargo 18521 Sherman Way

beneath a glowing nearly full moon.

In one of the day’s many highlights, the High School Marching Bands from Cleveland and Reseda High Schools combined for an uplifting rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the tail end of an incredible set of Reseda celebration songs by Listen, a Vineyard Church band. This ensemble preceded the afternoon speaking program which drew dignitaries from across the City to extoll the virtues of the Reseda Community.

CD3’s Reseda Deputy, Ron Rubine, began by introducing Councilman Dennis P. Zine, who was a major sponsor of the event. RNC Chair Cary Iaccino then thanked the Councilman for his service with a custom bobblehead doll that mimicked his face and the familiar Z emblem on the chest as well as a custom built symbolic key to Reseda.

Councilman Zine introduced Congressman Brad Sherman, Assembly Member Bob Blumenfield, Controller Wendy Gruel and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich. The Councilman then turned the ceremony back to Ron Rubine, who introduced Senator Fran Pavely. Councilmember Mitch Englander of CD 12, and State Senator Alex Padilla. Captain Nick Zingo of the West Valley Police Station was also on hand. Congressman Howard Berman, a festival supporter, attended earlier in the day and Councilmember Paul Krekorian, who grew up in Reseda, was spotted enjoying the festival with his kids during the festivities. Not even the unseasonal 100 degree weather could diminish the spirit of celebration.

Many thanks go to the folks that worked so hard to make this an unforgettable day. Starting with Event Pros LA and the tireless work of producer Adee Drory, supported by the Centennial Committee, Chaired by RNC Board Member Hank Truxillo with Committee Members; Kimberly Maxwell, Juan Guzman, Angel Gonzalez, Dean Bennett, Garth Carlson, Haim Linder, Janis Boafo, Susie Fabrocini and the 11:11 Art Collective, including Erin Stone, Addy Gonzalez and Matt Plotkin. Although not committee members, Jan Bryant, Kevin Taylor, Adna Shaked and many unnamed pitched in, all anchored by the tireless leadership efforts of outgoing Chairman Cary Iaccino, who leaves the council on a truly high note. Final thanks to the RNC Board for their ongoing effort to create and support this celebration.
