Why You Might Want To Know Me.

    Hola Mis Compaeros,

After a few months in Afghanistan, I wasstartled in my sleep at 2 in the morning bya single gunshot, that had fired off onlyfeet from where I was sleeping. A youngmarine was having trouble with a relation-ship he had back at home and took the lib-

erty of swallowing his 16-inch barrel of a

M16 assault rifle. Shot fired. He was pre-sumed DOA (dead on arrival), howev-er.. Our corpsman, GOD BLESS them, wewere all abruptly shaken out of our cotsand a few of our corpsman were up andmoving like the wind and went to work onsaving his life. They did. They brought

him back to life, by the simplest littlepiece of plastic, a breathing tube called aoropharyngeal airway (OPA). They kepthim alive long enough for med-evac(helicopter transport) to arrive and takethis young marine to an emergency clin-ic. Sadly though, he died and he was onlya few weeks away from returning home...But those corpsmen, docs we called them,

had made in impression on me.I want to

wake up and save a life. What a great wayto start your day. I am not naive to knowthat I won't be doing that in that ordernor will I be saving lives all the time, butbeing at the ready for when the timecomes is what I want to be prepared for.

    Another story...

    Months later after this

had happened there wasanother incident. My unitwas to be deployed to anarea in Afghanistan knowas Sangin Valley, this plachaunted thoughts until wewent there. The haunt waworth its weight in

fear. We read and heard reports of the

valley being a land mine crypt.Essential

every step taken could possibly be yourlast. The valley was an old mine field todestroy Russian tanks (Afghanistan hasalways been at war with far away neigh-bors). That wasn't the realitythough. The truth is, Afghanistan andevery city in it, developed or undevelope

is amazing and beautiful. The locals arefriendly and honorable, they hold true to

their word. Their customs are still primtive, but the men like to speak intellectually and poetically. However, the locals ithe area live with dangers of being blownup everyday. And it happened, one earlymorning in September. The earth was quet and the sun was just peaking over thehorizon, beautiful sight ever.

    Then a hug

explosion that produced a mushroomshaped cloud of smoke that reached 4stories high shook the earth. Everyone our camp all woke up and clambered fortheir rifles, helmets, and armor (in thatorder) while remaining in their chonies!!

    Page 3

That would be a sight for everyone tosee. This was as close to 300 as yourwere going to get. Back to the story...Our camp was atop a hill overlooking the

area we were conducting operations andwe could see everything. I watched thelocals walk up to our camp holding the cor-ners of a blue carpet and I could see anarm and leg dangling out the sides ofit. Then I realized they were coming tous for help. They must of known we had areal doctor on site, plus all the corps-

men.It was a women, she had stepped on

an IED (improvised explosive device), thevery thing we were fearing before westepped in that territory. Although, wewere equipped with the most basic ofmedical supplies, I watched them all work-ing together and they had a sys-tem. They were working as a team to savethis womans life. I remember hearing or-ders being given in a calm yet chaoticmanner. Everyone was moving swiftly tothe orders. Plastic wrappings, tubes, andpaper packaging were being torn open tosave her life. She was FUBAR (F'd be-yond all repair) but our medical staffbrought her back to life!

I had asked the corpsmen to teachme what they knew.

    My corpsman, Doc

Jim gym shorts" Schwartz, taught meenough about emergency medicine that itbecame a valuable asset for our platoon, and the Afghanistan war effort.I knewthe crude basics of a trained emergencymedical technician/paramedic afterspending several hours under his mentor-

ship. Throughout the deployment, we hesmall training classes and one of thoseclasses was knowing the layout of yourteammates equipment as they wear

it.Therefore, I knew my what my corps

man carried in his med-bag, I even knewwhat he carried in his pockets at alltimes. Most often, our gear layout wasuniform so that we all stayed thesame. It does not seem like a big deal toknow those small details, but when youhave a man shot in his femoral artery, or

worst in the chest and he is undergoing atension pneumothorax, and the victim isour corpsmen. Every second counts atthat point. A femoral bleed gives way todeath in less than 60 seconds. A tensionpneumothorax can quickly progress toother complications. And knowing hismedical kit, was an essential piece ofknowledge.

I started my nursing career at WeHills College, Lemoore. I had great in-structors and a great experiences withthe prerequisite courses for the nursingprogram. My instructors have taken in-terest in my life and they have been goomentors. It is a great responsibility beia health care provider and it is a callingthat I, and we all, are stepping up too.

    I

is the most honorable job that I can thinof. Its heroic. We are not heroes, weare compassionate student nurses.

    Hasta Luego,

    Andrew Youngblood

oenix, Arizona for the National Student Nurs-

Association's, or NSNA's, 63rd Annual Nation-Convention. This conference is an excellent re-

urce for nursing students seeking leadership ex-

States for advanced degree information, re-

urces to prepare for the NCLEX, a vast pool of

    CLEX-review sessions, individual resume-

views with experts, breakout sessions to explore

ecific roles in nursing, and meeting with re-

e things students have reported as the top bene-

    3rd Semester

    Last spring we went to

ashville, Tennessee for the annual NSNA

nvention. I was really looking forward toing, and I was not disappointed! It was an

mazing opportunity to meet people outside

y cohort and just spend time with like-

nded people. I was able to interact with

fferent vendors and learn about all the

fferent paths I could take in nursing. I

d always thought of nursing as a linearth, but after seeing all the opportunities

ead of me I realize that it is so much

ore. I think one of the most interesting

ngs I learned about was about forensic

rsing. I had never thought about that

ld, I never even knew it existed, and I am

ad to have had the opportunity to learnout it. The greatest thing about going to

ese conventions, besides travelling, is the

ance to really explore all the paths that

rsing has to offer and all the amazing

ngs ahead of you. I cant wait to go to the

xt convention and explore even more!
