I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Eric Narveson at 3:05 p.m. in

IV. Curriculum/Articulation A. New Course Proposals (Requires Board Approval)

Course: ART-039 Introduction to Digital Video (4.0 units)

This course covers the basics of digital video production: storyboarding, editing and output.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), methods of evaluation for SLOs (#10) and homework/assignments (#13), the course was approved unanimously.

Course: BIOL-063 Ecology (3.0 units)

This course introduces students to the science of ecology, the branch of biology that studies the abundance and distribution of plants and animals and their interrelationships with the environment.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), short schedule description (#7) and student learning outcomes (#9), the course was approved unanimously.

B. Course Revisions: Do Not Require Governing Board Approval

Course: ASTRO-010L: Introductory Astronomy Lab (1.0 unit)

This is an introductory laboratory course in general astronomy, and includes observations done with telescopes at the observatory.

Evaluation of Transcripts – Marc spoke about how to evaluate foreign transcripts; will give info to Vicki to send out.

VII. Old Business Lynette gave an update on the accreditation visit scheduled for Oct. 18-21; there will be a 12 member team Eric mentioned 79% of courses in the catalog have SLOs; the goal is to get close to 100% by Dec. Eric informed committee the Revised 2010-2011 Course Outline will be posted tomorrow; very little difference. Eric mentioned that the Senate is addressing the issue of faculty workload and that an ad hoc committee was created to explore the limits. Eric added that the Senate chair is extending an invitation to the committee to join if interested and give recommendations to Senate.

III. Accreditation Information: Kuni Hay

Kuni spoke to the committee in detail regarding the accreditation visit that is scheduled for October 18-21, 2010. She explained the process and what to expect from the visiting time. Kuni also passed out a schedule of open forums and meetings that the visiting team had planned with various constituent groups and governance committees during their visit.

IV. Approval of Minutes – After corrections to ASTRO- 10L description and the faculty workload information

under old business the minutes were unanimously approved.

V. Curriculum/Articulation

A. New Course Proposals (Requires Board Approval)

Course: BIO 062: Plants and Human Welfare (3.0 units)

This course is the introduction to plants and their relationship to human welfare.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), and course lecture content (8a), the course was approved unanimously.

Course: ACCTG 048: International Accounting (5.0 units)

This course was moved on the agenda from Course Revisions (Action Items b) to New Courses (Action item a) This course is designed to learn the fundamentals of International Accounting as practiced by international organizations.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), short schedule description (#7) and student learning outcomes (#9), homework (#13) and baccalaureate status (36a), the course was approved unanimously.

B. Course Revisions: Do Not Require Governing Board Approval

Course: SPAN 031: Introduction to Translation and Interpreting (4 units)

This course will cover the historical origins, theories, techniques, and practices of translating and interpreting. Students will focus on comprehension of source language texts and accurate expression of content and style in translations.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), the course was approved

unanimously.

Course: SPAN 032: Spanish Grammar and Composition (3 units) Students will develop reading and writing skills through the process of composition.

Action: There were no recommended edits to this course. The course was approved

unanimously.

Course: SPAN 033: Spanish/English Linguistics Analysis (3 units) This course will provide the student with an analysis and description of some of the most relevant aspects of Spanish/English grammar, emphasizing the implications on translation and interpreting.

Action: There were no recommended edits to this course. The course was approved

unanimously.

Course: SPAN 035: Sight Translation (3 units) This course will introduce students to the fundamental skill of sight translation. Students will learn how to comply with the legal equivalence requirements of this mode of interpretation.

Action: There were no recommended edits to this course. The course was approved

unanimously.

VII. Information Items

Evaluating Foreign Transcripts Policy/Procedures – Marc Sola - Marc explained in detail, the documents attached to the meeting reminder. He explained the current process of evaluating foreign transcripts. There was a lengthy discussion about revising the process. Shelley recommended the companies that approved the agencies that evaluate foreign transcripts be on the form. Eric recommended the Deans take this information to their Divisions and start this new process by Fall 2011, however the policy has to be passed by the Senate before implemented. Lynette and Marc will meet with Octavio regarding the process and invite him to our follow up meeting. Eric requested that Marc write a general policy statement for the committee to vote on and send to the Senate. SB 1440 – Marc Sola - Marc informed the committee that the State Assembly and Senate passed AB 1230 or 1240. This bill would require the California State University to guarantee admission with junior status to any community college student who meets the requirements for the associate degree for transfer. As more information becomes available Marc will bring to the committee.

Course: DISP 176: Dispatch Academy – Extension (2-24 units)

This course is designed to provide a training continuum which integrates the acquired knowledge and skills from the Dispatcher Academy with practical application.

Action: After edits were made to the catalog description (#6), and course lecture content (8a), and AA/Non AA Status (#23a), the course was approved unanimously.

B. Course Revisions: Do Not Require Governing Board Approval

Course: LE-154: Basic Police Academy (22-27 units)

This course satisfies all minimum required training mandates governed by the Commission on Peace Office Standards and Training (POST) entry level Peace Officers.

Action: After minor changes were made to the catalog description (#6), the course was approved

unanimously.

Course: Law Enforcement Certificate of Achievement

The Evergreen Valley College Police Academy Law Enforcement program is designed for indivudals who wish to pursue a career in Law Enforcment.

Action: After minor punctuation corrections, the course was approved unanimously.

Course: PHIL-012: Introduction to Existentialism: The Meaning of Life (3 units)

Students focus on various forms of existentialism as expressed in philosophy and literature, the spectrum of its meanings and its relevance to the development of individiual and collective human values.

Action: Since the faculty wasn’t present, the course was deferred to the next ACCC meeting. Course: PHIL-065: Introduction to Ethics (3 units)

This course explores some of the major ethical theories an dproblems of the past and present.

Action: Since the faculty wasn’t present, the course was deferred to the next ACCC meeting.

Course: MATH 52: Math for Elementary Education (3 units)

This course covers arithmetic theory and operations necessary for the teaching of mathematical concepts to elementary school children.

Action: Since the faculty wasn’t available to meet with the ACCC today, this course was postponed to the

next ACCC meeting.

Course: ENVIR-010: Environmental Science (4 units)

This is a interdisciplinary course where students examine the interaction between human civilization and the environment, and the foundations for a sustainable future.

Action: After minor changes, the course was approved unanimously.

Course: MUSIC-099: Introductory Music

This course is designed for the student who wishes to learn the "language" of music; how to read, notate, interpret, perform, and create with those symbols which represent the four properties of sound: pitch, duration, amplitude, and timbre.

Action: This course was added to the agenda by the Chair. After minor changes, the course was approved unanimously.

VIII. Old Business Evaluation of Foreign Transcripts Marc Sola Marc presented an updated draft of the Foreign Transcript Evaluation policy and procedures. He said the new draft incorporated the elements committee members had requested at the last meeting. As requested, he spoke with Octavio Cruz and Yvonne Chang in the A&R office for their feedback on the policy. They were satisfied with policy as written with one suggestion that was added to the draft. Lynette Apen provided information as well that is included in the draft. A statement introducing the policy was drafted and will be included when the policy is submitted to the EVC Academic Senate. After discussion, the committee voted unanimously to approve the policy and send it on to the Academic Senate for their consideration.

wasn’t present at the meeting, this course approval has been delayed until the issue of teaching foreign language online has been addressed.

Course: PHIL-012: Introduction to Existentialism: The Meaning of Life (3 units)

Students focus on various forms of existentialism as expressed in philosophy and literature, the spectrum of its meanings and its relevance to the development of individual and collective human values.

Action: Since this course is not being taught at EVC, the committee recommended the faculty process the

necessary paperwork to deactivate the course.

This program will prepare students for a challenging career in the field of Virtual Construction and Design. It is for professionals who are currently working in the field of Construction Management, and students interested in entering the construction field as BIM specialists.

Action: After much discussion and several revisions, the ACCC approved unanimously. Course: BIM 120: Construction, Means, Methods and Materials (3 units)

This course is an introduction to Construction Management, as it relates to understanding the multi-faceted roles and responsibilities that are typically shared by project team members during the course of a construction project

Action: After minor edits, ACCC approved pending the submission of critical thinking examples for #10 and #13.

Course: BIM 121: Virtual Design and Construction

This course will lead the student through a series of exercises related to Virtual Design and Construction Workflow processes, procedures and expose them to the tools required.

Action: After minor edits, this course was approved unanimously.

Course: BIM 122: Managing Construction Coordination Meetings

This course will lead the student through a series of exercises related to Virtual Design and Construction Workflow processes, procedures and expose them to the tools required.

Course: BIM 123: Revit Fundamentals

This course will cover the fundamentals of Autodesk Revit Architecture in a lecture/lab format with hands-on learning.

Course: BIM 124: Revit Advanced Training

This course is focused specifically on providing an immediate to advanced level of training on Revit Architecture.

Action: After minor edits, ACCC approved pending the submission of Pre-requisite statement for #47. Course: BIM 125: Planning and Managing Construction Projects with 4D CAD

Building Information Modeling (BIM) integrates 3D drawings and 4D animations to dramatically improve the communication, coordination, and planning of construction projects, while reducing risks, errors, and costs.

Action: After minor edits, this course was approved unanimously. Course: BIM 138: Occupational Work Experience

Occupational work experience is designed for students who work or volunteer in the field related to their vocational major.

Action: After minor edits, this course was approved unanimously.

V. New Business The committee discussed the controversy of the number of SLOs required on the Course Outline. The committee decided that the form is misleading and outdated. There’s no minimum or maximum number of SLOs required. Plan to remove “Enter 6-12 Learning Outcomes” from the revised 2011-2012 form. Jan recommend that we check with the Accreditation team to make sure we are within the guidelines with the minimum requirements for SLOs. Eric will speak to Kuni and R.J. to verify that we are within the SLO requires for Accreditation. Eric will also notify all faculty through e-mail that going forward that they will not be held to the standard of entering 6-12 SLOs on the Course Outline form.
