Pass the Stuffing Letter from the Editor

{Jan 1} The Holidays... Boy oh boy the holidays can be a stressful time. You're runningeverywhere... in and out of the house... into town... into traffic... to the malls... to the shops...

Inevitably, things fall behind. You get yourself into a situation where the vast multitude of

commitments and responsibilities you have begin to feel somewhat overwhelming.

And then you fall behind.

Case in point. I was foolish enough this year to add a home renovation project into my holiday

time period. Here's my poor wife... wanting to put the tree up and get the home decorated in the

weeks prior to Christmas... and I've got the place a mess! Drywall and plaster... paint and trim...

materials and tools.... ALL OVER THE PLACE! Not exactly what she wanted for seasonal

decor. I think in the future I will save such large projects for months other than December...:) Now, we managed to get everything cleaned up and the house decorated in time to enjoy

Christmas {barely}. So don't worry, I'm not sleepnig on the couch!

But all this made me realise, that with so much going on this time of year... some things have got

to give. You cannot just say yes to every idea, request or demand. You have to learn to delegate

where possible... and {unfortunately} say NO to others and yourself. With all the stress this time

of year brings you really want to avoid over-burdenning yourselves... and wind up missing the

entire point of the season!

No matter what particular cultural or religious traditions you have this time of year... they all

pretty much carry with them a degree of stress from planning, anticipation and expectations. If you really want to be able to enjoy this time... in the spirit it was meant to be enjoyed... try as

hard as possible to clear your schedule.

Clear your schedule... clear your mind...

clear your heart.

Look around at your friends and loved ones and

appreciate them... and when it comes to all your

various commitments and responsibilities...

Hey that’s what New Year's resolutions arefor..........:)

Long Fiction

the last stand...

In the clearing, the battle continues to rage on. At the edge of the clearing, hidden safely by

bushes and trees {although safely being a relative term} two members of The Watch observe the

ensuing battle. Patrick, red hair tied back in a pony tail and nervous anxiety radiating from him,

looks over at his commander... Roughrider.

He is certain this vantage point was chosen specifically. For a variety of reasons that Patrick

attempts to bear in mind as his teammates charge into battle. Probably, Roughrider thought he

could keep an eye on the battle and issue commands to his “troops”.... Maybe as a marksman he

can offer his “assistance”... Patrick’s unsure about that sort of assistance though.

Death and killing. Death and killing. Not the kinds of things he signed up for. He may be a lot

of things... vagabond... hobo... drifter... not the sort of life one can brag about with pride.. but

Patrick’s just not a killer. Not his problem to worry about he supposes. His abilities haven’t yet

helped...

“Focus on the task at hand then dammit! That’s what the training was for right?” Patrick silently

 berates himself.

That was what all that training was for. Focus. Focussing on the tasks at hand. Not his job to

worry about who’s trying to kill who. It is his job to heal the wounded. And oh boy it looks thereit going to be a lot of wounded.

A bullet severs the tendons in Bogeyman’s sword arm. His arm begins to fall to his side and

his hand starts losing the grip on his sword. These various... Thugs...hmm... humourously dubbed

‘stagehands’ begin to rush towards him.

Patrick’s concentration is the key to survival today. Bogeyman’s sword is not going to fall

from his grasp. Patrick sends his power into the wound. In the time it takes Raven Ten’s hand to

fall six, maybe seven inches, the wound in his arm has vanished and healed. The damaged

tendons and ligaments from the bullet’s travelling through his forearm just above his wrist have

vanished! Raven’s grip tightens as he regains command of his sword. A smile crosses theBogeyman’s face as he prepares to slash once more at his enemies. Patty is looking out for him...

all is well... so back to work.

So much courage going across the field. Patrick scans left and right. He knows he can’t wastetoo much of his energy on too many of the fallen. Another bullet... on another part of the

battlefield... rifles right through the knee of 88, who is charging further and further out of

Patrick’s range.

“They call me The Seventh Son, heh” but now he realises it’s not that silly. Powers like his can’t

hurt anyone... but sure coulda got ya burned as a witch once upon a time!

“Soon Danny, aka 88, will be too far away for me to heal him...” Patrick thinks, “but for now, I

can still reach him!”

With a thought, the wound is healed and Danny keeps right on fighting. “Hmm...” Patrick wonders “the man’s fighting with quite a single minded determination. I wonder if he even

knows a bullet just went through his leg? Hmm...no worry, as long as he doesn’t get too far out

of my range.”

Patrick feels empowered. For the first time, in a very long time, he feels like he is a functioning

part of the world. He can do good things. Why... he can do great things! By using his gift he can

help his friends and by extension... the world. He just has to concentrate and observe the battle.

He looks over at Roughrider. That man’s got his rifle shouldered and he’s going to start taking

out enemies, isn’t he? Thinning the herd....

“What if I were to use my powers to keep all deaths from happening on this battlefield?” theSeventh Son considers. “What if I were to use my powers to protect everyone?” But then he

looks up on the hill. At the glowing, laughing, madman, Vaudeville. Naw. This psychopath

would just keep sending those idiots of his... in wave after wave... after our guys. It pains Patrick

to admit it to himself... but if he lets these enemies live they’re just going to keep attacking and

maybe even killing some of us. This isn’t a street fight. This isn’t a dust up in the school yard.

There may be no nations here... there may be no flags waving and there may be no Generals

barking orders to troops. But you know what? This is war.

“And as much as it hurts me to face this... I can’t protect everyone. In fact, there are some I

shouldn’t even try to protect.” Patrick hardens his mind and heart to the task at hand. “There are

gonna be casualties today!”

Family Life My Journal - by Mandie Fortin

{Dec 20} What a wonderful place to call home for so many people. Coldwater, Ontario.

I have been back only a week and a bit and already I'm smiling bigger than I ever have.

Only in Coldwater would you see the streets lined with candles and smiling faces everywhere.

Only in Coldwater would you see a donkey on main street along with 2 lama's and all for a live

activity scene for Christmas.

Only in Coldwater would you walk into a bank to be handed cookies from Mrs. Claus and sit on

Santa's knee, even if his beard is noticeably fake {as I was informed by my oldest daughter} but

it was a magical experience that brought tears to my eyes to see my 3 children sitting on his kneetelling him what they want for Christmas... and to be entertained by a 6 ft elf playing Christmas

songs on an accordion

.

Christmas really does bring out the best in people. Even Tim Horton's staff members sing to you

when they are ready to take your order in Orillia. It truly is great to be back. I love it here and I'm

glad to say, “I'm home!”

Merry Christmas everyone.

Pop Culture Raised On Saturday Morning Cartoons - by Pauline Harren Pare

I would like to start this month's column with a rant about the writer's strike. TOO LONG! Thatis all I want to say.

I am not about to take sides but I miss my shows. I am not writing just to complain. I have no

influence over the writer's strike. There are, however, some shows that were due to release in

January and February that are promising.

"Terminator: The Sarah Conners Chronicles" (Jan.13 and 14 with a regular time slot of Mondays

at 9:00pm) is something interesting for fans of the films. It appears to roughly take place after the

2nd movie. I found a good description of it at:

http://www.tvguide.com/special/BestofYear07/2008preview.aspx

Sadly, it is airing on the 'FOX' network which I have never forgiven for ending some of myfavourite shows before they were given a chance (Firefly... among others). I suppose I can give

them one more try...

Even more exciting..."Lost"!!!!! The season finale rocked with a flash forward as opposed to the

many flashbacks we have seen before.

I can't wait. I can't wait. I can't wait.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until Jan. 31 when this show premieres and there were only 8

episodes filmed before the writer's strike (TOO LONG! see above)

Our favourite evening talk shows are coming back without writers. Will this improve them or

make them worse? Only time will tell. Some reality shows are coming back too. Different strokesfor different folks I guess. As for the strike, I hope to open next month's column with good news.

Cross your fingers, everyone!

In My Opinion... - by R.J. Pare

Okay, In My Opinion, Beowulf did not work. From a technological standpoint this film had its

flaws. Now, you're gonna be aghast wondering what do I mean by that... what do I mean it had

flaws? You're thinking that Beowulf was a technological marvel; that it achieved a level of

sophisticated animation... with its motion capture... that had never been seen before. Now whilethat may be true, it didn't work for me... and I'm gonna tell you why. After assembling a stellar

cast of actors for the voices in this animated feature... the producers/directors of this movie

pursued an amazingly life-like form of motion capture animation that is cutting edge. In many

scenes, these characters looked almost real... except for a seemingly plastic type sheen to their

skin and clothes. Now while this is highly advanced... and is perfect for the world of video

gaming... it has drawbacks in the cinematic realm.

The movie going experience is all about suspension of disbelief. While watching this film you

can try to enjoy it purely as animated feature... BUT the almost life like animation leads your

perspective {and by extension... your expectation} into viewing the movie as a regular film. The

problem is that the body language and facial expressions seems stiff and artificial. This jars your

sensibilities. Your immediate emotional reaction... is that it is bad acting... but then you

remember it is just animation... just not as fluid as more traditional styles.

A character I won a scholarship with - Santiago London

Dark Phoenix - by Santiago London

Page 18: RKYV ONLINE # 7

The end result is a movie going experience in which your suspension of disbelief is hindered by a

presentation that seems an evolutionary half-step... important perhaps in the future development

of animation that will be indistinguishable from real life... but which currently fails to give actors

the ability to connect with the audience with anything more than their voice. While this is fine for

traditional animation {since fluid animators can create whatever fluid body movements they

choose} it is far too little for an actor to work with in this type of performance since their characters are acting like limited marionettes.

I personally have my doubts if any technology is going to be able to replicate the delicate nuances

of performance that a talented actor demonstrates through body language and facial expression. If

this is the future of film making... HEY, I will gladly live in the past!
