    Mercutio and

    Benvolio are walking

    around Verona.

    Benvolio warns that

    the Capulets are

    around and looking to

    start a fight.

    Mercutio easily startsarguments with

    anyone. Benvolio is

    the peace maker.

    Tybalt shows up.

    Tybalt has been lookingto fight with Romeo.

    Tybalt starts an

    argument withMercutio.

    Tybalt accuses Mercutio ofassociating with Romeo, aMontague.

    Benvolio tries to stopthe argument betweenMercutio and Tybalt.

    Romeo arrives in ahappy mood.

    No one else knows thathes just married Juliet.

    Tybalt starts arguingwith him.

    Romeo does not wantto fight Tybalt becausehe married Juliet. Mercutio doesnt know

    about Romeos reason fornot wanting to fight.

    Mercutio stands in forRomeo in the fight whichleads to fateful problems.

    Romeo to Tybalt: I do protest, I never injured thee,

    But love thee better than thou canst devise,

    Till thou shalt know the reason of my love:

    And so, good Capulet,--which name I tender

    As dearly as my own,--be satisfied.

    Tybalt: Romeo, the hate I bear thee can afford

    No better term than this,--thou art a villain.

    The First Fight 1. The hotheaded

    Mercutio draws his swordand challenges Tybalt,the King of Cats

    2. Tybalt draws hissword and the fightbegins.

    3. Romeo tries to stopthe fight by steppingbetween Tybalt andMercutio.

    4. Tybalt reachesunder Romeos arm andstabs Mercutio.

    6. After Romeo kills

    Tybalt, Benvolio tells

    Romeo to go or the

    Prince will kill him. 7. Romeo flees the

    scene and goes to

    Friar Laurence.

    Tybalt

    Benvolio: Romeo, away, be gone!

    The citizens are up, and Tybalt slain.

    Stand not amazed: the prince will doom thee death,

    If thou art taken: hence, be gone, away!

    And he will make the face of heaven so fine

    That all the world will be in love with night

    Nurse

    Returns with the ropeladder

    She is very upset

    because she is a loyalCapulet servant.

    She tells Juliet whathappened.

    She confuses Juliet.

    Juliet thinks that Romeo is dead

    Or both Romeo andTybalt are dead

    Juliet to Nurse: What storm is this that blows so contrary?

    Is Romeo slaughter'd, and is Tybalt dead?

    My dear-loved cousin, and my dearer lord?

    Then, dreadful trumpet, sound the general doom!

    For who is living, if those two are gone?

    Friar Laurence tells Romeohe is banished.

    Romeo didnt know his

    punishment because he ranaway after killing Tybalt.

    Romeo for thinkingbanishment is death;

    but he cant get Romeo tolisten.

    Friar Laurence comesup with a plan:

    After the Capulets areasleep, Romeo will goto Juliets room for their

    wedding night.

    Romeo is to leavebefore dawn and to goMantua and

    Romeo is to wait inMantua until he hearsfrom Friar Laurence vialetter.

    Friar Laurence will publishRomeo & Juliets marriageat the right time

    Friar believes theMontagues and Capulets willreconcile due to the

    marriage Friar feels the Prince will be

    overjoyed at thereconciliation betweenfamilies

    Friar thinks Romeo will be

    pardoned by the prince. Then, the prince will allow

    Romeo to live in Verona.

    And everyone will livehappily ever after.

    Scene 4 occurs whileRomeo is upstairs withJuliet at the Capulets.

    Paris comes over to seehow Juliet is doing

    Juliets parents believe thatshe is grieving for Tybaltsdeath.

    To cheer Juliet up, herparents decide that shellmarry Paris in 3 days(Thursday)

    Lord Capulet first decided onWednesday but realized itwould not look like the familywas grieving over Tybalt ifthey only waited 2 days.

    Juliet tries to convinceRomeo that is stillnight so that he wontleave.

    Lady Capulet goes to seeJuliet

    She thinks that Juliet is stillcrying over Tybalts death.

    Juliet is really sobbing overRomeos banishment.

    Lady Capulet tells Juliet thatthey will send someone toMantua to poison Romeo.

    Juliet tells her mother thatshe will never be happywith Romeo until she sees

    him. . .dead is her heart. Her mother does not catch on

    to this pun on the worddead.

    Marriage to Paris Lady Capulet tells Juliet

    that she gets to marryParis on Thursdaymorning!

    Juliet refuses to marry

    Paris. She tells her mother it is

    because Paris nevercourted her & themarriage is too quick.

    After Juliets parentsleave her room: Juliet panics because

    she is already married.

    Nurse tells her that

    Romeo is as good asdead since he has beenbanished.

    Nurse thinks that sheshould marry Paris.

    The Nurses commentabout Romeo and Parissevers her relationshipwith Juliet.

    Nurse: I think it best you married with the county.

    O, he's a lovely gentleman!

    Juliet realizes that the Nurse

    wont help her.

    She pretends to go

    along with the plan tomarry Paris.

    After the Nurseleaves, she speaks illof her: a most wicked

    fiend. She leaves to go to

    confession at FriarLaurences.
