Travel of Dr. Jose P. Rizal From Manila to Singapore
Rizal's First Trip Abroad
3 May 1882Rizal left Philippines for the first time Spain. He boarded the Salvadora using a passport of Jose Mercado, which was procured for him by his uncle Antonio Rivera, father of Leonor Rivera. He was accompanied to the quay where the Salvadora was moored by his uncle Antonio, Vicente Gella, and Mateo Evangelista.
4 May 1882He got seasick on board the boat.
5 May1882He conversed with the passengers of the ship; he was still feeling sea-sick.
6 May 1882He played chess with the passengers on board.
8 May 1882He saw mountains and Islands.
9 May 1882Rizal arrived at Singapore.
10 May 1882He went around the town of Singapore and maid some observations.
11 May 1882In Singapore, at 2 p.m., Rizal boarded the boat Djemnah to continue his trip to Spain. He found the boat clean and well kept.

for him to improve his knowledge of the
French language while on board a
French ship, Djemnah.

En route through the Suez Canal, Rizal got off at
the Red Sea terminal and was amazed by the
impressive moonlight scenery in Suez and was
engrossed with the multicultural people and
language of the place. June 11,1882- he reached Naples “Is the capital of
Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, after Rome and Milan

June 12,1882- the steamer docked at the French harbor Marseilles
Afternoon of June 15,1882- Rizal left Marseilles by train for the last lap of trip to Spain
June 16, 1882- Rizal finally reached his destination –BarcelonaRizal’s first impression of Barcelona, the greatest city of Cataluña and Spain’s second largest was unfavorable
He arrived Barcelona, Spain where he met some Filipinos. He also made his
first nationalistic essay he wrote abroad, “Amor Patrio” which was later
published in Diarong Tagalog.
