Motor Neurone disease (MND) is a fatal rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work. It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. MND kills six people per day in the UK. It affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time. It has no cure.

The MND Association is the only charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning. We rely almost entirely on vol-untary donations. Our 5,000 plus active volunteers are the lifeblood of the Asso-ciation. Their hard work and dedication allows us to reach out to more people liv-ing with MND, offering compassion, help and support when it is needed most. The Chulmleigh and District Society is delighted to be sponsoring the opportunity for anyone who would enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra to do so by playing alongside the Bondleigh Barn Band. The band began in 2013 with six players and Richard Edwards, its musical director, meeting in a barn in Bondleigh. It now has over 40 players who meet once a fortnight to enjoy making music together. It has been invited to play in public in-creasingly and has raised over £13,000 for local causes and charities. Richard said “This is an opportunity for anyone who fancies the idea to come along and enjoy the fun of making music with other folk. In rehearsal the band will prepare music it has not seen be-fore and would welcome visitors to sit with them and play along. We cater for violin, viola, ‘cello, double bass, oboe, flute, clarinet, bassoon, trum-pet, french horn, tenor saxophone, acoustic gui-tar, banjo and keyboard. If you play another in-strument please be in touch and we shall en-deavour to make provision for you”. To participate in this free event please contact Liz Wesson on 01769 580005 or email [email protected] giving your name, instru-ment, what sort of standard you are (however rusty, whatever age) and if you would like after-noon tea. Music will then be prepared for you ac-cordingly.

The Pannier Market in S Molton has been voted as one of the best in the country at the National Association of British Markets Awards after finishing in the top ten. South Molton was the only market in Devon and Cornwall to make it to the finals and finds itself up against some big markets in-cluding Swansea, Newcastle, Hull and Chester. Described as the Oscars for the market industry, members of the public were invited to vote for their favourite market.. It has been a busy year in S Molton with new market supervisor Will Tyacke running the popu-lar country markets on a Thursday and Saturday, which are consistently fully booked with almost 70 stalls. Will said, “We are so pleased to have been voted as one of the best markets in the country….considering we are quite a small town in comparison to the other markets I think this is an achievement which we can be quite proud of and I’d like to thank everyone that took the time to vote for us”. The market has seen a number of diverse events being staged, including an appearance by Brit-ain’s Got Talent Finalists the D Day Darlings, a live broadcast on market day by Radio Devon and the successful Guinness Book of World Rec-ord attempt for the World’s Largest Rugby Ball which arrived in the market by helicopter. Along-side the weekly markets the venue also plays host to monthly salvage fairs and flea markets which also attract a healthy footfall to the town. Events and Promotions Manager, Melanie James said: “We have tried really hard this year to stage a range of different events that appeal to a broad spectrum of people. We have exciting plans for next year lined up with some great bookings coming in and it’s great to see that our efforts have been rewarded.” The top ten markets are independently judged and the winner announced on 30th January.

Last year the Safe Sleep project, helped 111 peo-ple, at least 36 of whom are now in secure ac-commodation. This year, North Devon and Tor-ridge councils have joined forces to provide the service to rough sleepers across both districts. Safe Sleep is based at the Salvation Army Centre in Barnstaple and will be open until 31 March 2020. Housing officers from both councils are now calling for volunteers to help out, as well as requesting donations, including: •tinned soup and tinned tomatoes •pasta and rice, lentils, beans and pulses •tea, coffee and biscuits •board games for adults North Devon Council’s Lead Member for Housing, Councillor Nicola Topham said: “We are very pleased to be opening our doors to those in need during the cold winter months by offering shelter at night and refreshments. We would be very grateful for volunteers to help out at the Centre until March, making tea and coffee, providing a warm welcome, and supporting staff. If you have any provisions you don't need, please take them to Lynton House in Barnstaple.” Prospective volunteers are asked to email the Council’s Service Lead for Housing, Vulnerable Persons and Community Safety, Natasha Row-land on [email protected].

We are looking at how farmers, landowners, government, national parks and aca-demics see the opportunities. We will look at what might be the ways to make money in the coming years, where the focus of the key buyers (commodity, government and environmental) is going to be and how farmers can get involved. Speakers from: farmers from across England, Defra, Exmoor National Park, Duchy of Cornwall, Environment Agency, Derek Gow Consultancy, NFU, AHDB, University of Exeter. Organ donation changes From spring 2020, organ donation in England will move to an 'opt out' system. You may also hear it called 'Max and Keira's Law'. This means that all adults in England will be con-sidered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die, unless they have recorded a deci-sion not to donate or are under the age of 18, lack the mental capacity, are visitors to Eng-land, or have lived in here for less than 12 months before death. You still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor or not when you die. Get the facts about organ donation to help you decide. Visit www. organdonation.nhs.uk. What better way to refresh your diet after a season of

over-indulgence than to get more veg into your meals? Aromatic beetroot curry

with quinoa and coconut—Serves 4

Oil for frying e.g. sunflower or coconut 2 onions (3-4 if small), peeled & finely sliced 1 tbsp black mustard seeds 800g beetroots, peeled & chopped into 1-2cm dice, or thin wedges 2 large or 3-4 small garlic cloves, peeled & finely chopped 6cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled & finely grated 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp turmeric 1 cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 1-2 red chillies, deseeded & finely chopped - add to your taste for heat 4 tomatoes, roughly diced 1 tin coconut milk A little hot stock or water, to thin the curry if needed 2 limes, juice to taste 2 tbsp toasted desiccated coconut or coconut chips Salt & pepper Cooked quinoa (or use rice or naan, as you prefer) & yoghurt to serve

Heat 2tbsp oil in a large pan with a lid. Gently fry the onion for 10mins, stirring now and then. Add a splash of water if it looks like catching at any point. Add the mustard seeds. Fry until you hear them start to pop. Add the beetroot, garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, bay and chilli to your taste for heat. Stir for 2mins. Add the tomatoes and coconut milk. Season, cov-er and simmer for approx 25mins, stirring now and then, until the beetroot is tender. Top up with a splash of stock or water as needed, to prevent the curry from drying out too much. When the beetroot is tender, squeeze in lime juice and add more salt and pepper, all to taste. Serve sprinkle with toasted coconut and serve with cooked quinoa (or rice) and a dollop of yoghurt.

Wildflower Farming Matthew Cooke and his family are determined to help the environment by converting their farm pasture at Great Avercombe in Bishops Nympton into wildflower meadows, providing better habi-tats and offsetting carbon emissions. They want to work in partnership; farmers, councils and gar-den owners together, each doing their bit to cre-ate more wildflower ecosystems restoring a lost environment. The 97% decline in wildflower meadows since the Second World War is not a natural event; it has occurred due to farming practices driven by consumer and Government priorities. The effect was further exacerbated by commercial pressure from supermarkets de-manding more for less from farmers. The Cooke’s vision is to convert modern mead-ows back to wildflower meadows, creating a pan-orama that is full of colour, “We can only do this with your help, we have already started, believing it to be right. Together, using your support we will make wildflower meadows a thing of the future not just of the past”. If you want to help fight cli-mate change become a Wildflower Farmer. Your subscription will help create wildflower meadows and then maintain them. Subscribers receive their own pouch of wildflower seeds, taken from the same batch sown at Avercombe. Businesses can also join in to offset their carbon. The Cooke family will give you special updates on the project and you will receive advice and support on how to grow your seeds.
