Protected birds left for winter
A s m a ny w i t n e s s e d Sylvania Park was home to more than four thousand protected Egrets for many months unt i l recent ly. Leaving a month earlier than last year the birds have departed in what Park’s employees call ‘a relief ’. Heading as far as South America the birds have left a mess. On September 30th the Parks dept. will begin
‘Operation Squash’ which will assess damage to trees and Park property. It will also begin the massive clean up of bird feces throughout S y l v a n i a P a r k . J e r r y M c D owe l l , Pa rk s a n d Community Services district superintendent has said that the City is committed to removing all the twigs and brush left behind by the birds and will reseed the ground as well as power wash the benches.
T h e R e t u r n P a r k employees are gearing up for the egrets return next year and plan on having scare tactics in place hoping they will move to an adjacent park that has a lower level of activity.

Did you know that Egrets became endangered due to
plume hunting? Their feathers were used to make
ladies’ hats in the 19th Century.

Three Fort Worth area homeowners
commended for water conservation
Attention CRNA members -
we need to step up and represent next year!
In an effort to raise awareness of wasteful water usage the Fort Worth Water Department and BRIT par tne red to cha l l enge a rea homeowners to create the perfect, water efficient landscape and compete in the EcoScape, residential landscape contest. Residents with 1,000 square foot (or larger) front yard were eligible and were asked to submit their water efficient yards that use native/adaptive plants and mix according to color, aesthetic appeal, and plant variety.
The Winners First place went to Betty Porter, 3217 Field Street, Haltom City; Second place, Kathy Clark, 4005 W. 6th Street, Fort Worth; and third place, Rick Tucker, 2517 Ryan Avenue, Fort Worth. Each will receive a winner’s sign and a membership to BRIT. In
addition the first place winner receives a compost bin and a 50-gallon rain barrel.
The winners are congratulated for employing water saving methods such as rain water harvesting, composting, drip irrigation, and planting native and adaptive plants not only helping to lower monthly water bills, but can also significantly reduce the amount of water needed from area lakes.
It is estimated that up to 50% of all water used in the summer months goes to residential landscapes.
In hopes of making this an annual contest, BRIT and the Fort Worth Water Department will again sponsor the competition next year. Applications will be available on the City of Fort Worth and BRIT web sites.

Quick history lesson - Riverside wasn't called Riverside until the late
1800s, before that, it was called Sylvania and before that, it was called 'Greasy
Bend'.
What we don't know is WHY the area was called 'greasy bend'. if any of you have a
thought ((whether a real reason or just for fun)) about the origin, would you please send
it along? This name dates to the early 1800s.
Big thanks to Terri for bringing that to our attention.

Riverside of ‘Gay N i n e t i e s ’ H a d ‘Palatial’ Street Cars
Fort Worth Start Telegram
October 30th, 1949 With “palatial” pullman type street
cars, Riverside had one of the
world’s plushiest car lines in the early nineties, but in 1922 it was
the lack of street car facilities that brought Riverside into the city.
Riverside was known as
Sylvania Addition until March 16, 1891, when it was platted by the
East Fort Worth Town Company and given its present name.
About the same time, Ed
Chase, a Boston financier who had become interested in Fort
Worth real estate, built the famous car line which operated
the largest and most comfortable
equipment ever used in Texas or
the South.
Artesian Well.
To give the public somewhere
to go, Chase developed a Riverside park which had a
pavilion and artesian well, making it a popular Sunday retreat.
However, the line folded up
within a few years, because the cars were too long to turn sharp
curves without derailing. But Riverside went on building.
To the 42 blocks in the
original 1891 plat were added 30 in 1907 and the section now is
one of the largest in the city, containing some of Fort Worth’s
finest middle bracket homes.
Oakhurst in 1925.
The major subdivision of
Riverside is Oakhurst which John P. King and C.L. Wardlaw
originally platted about 1925, and
Robert King platted an extension, West Oakhurt, in 1946.
Sylvan Heights was platted about 1932 by the Baker and
Albrecht interests along with J.J.
Hurley.
Men who have helped build
Riverside were E.W. Taylor, Chase, Ben O. Smith, W.L.
Browning, J.B. and Ed Baker,
Stewart Chesser, C.R. and F.J. Albrecht, Clarence Jones.
