Overview Welcome to Capital Child Care Centre! We are Daycare and After School Care Providers located at Riverbend Child’s Pavilion. We are an Accredited Facility. Accreditation means that our facility has been recognized for providing high quality childcare, as well as a higher standard of practice. We hope that your involvement with our centre will be a delightful experience for both you and your child!

We encourage you to take time to talk with us, ask questions concerning your child and his/her development or give us feedback about our program. Tell us about your child, keep us aware of anything that may affect your child’s behavior. Little things like getting enough sleep, not being able to wear a favorite sweater may affect your child either positively or negatively. We’d like to share and understand your child’s excitements, accomplishments and even disappointments. Remember, you are always welcome. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please call Daljit at (780) 438-4572 or email us at [email protected] for any information.

Program Philosophy It takes a whole community to raise a child. It’s up to all of us to make sure that the child’s every need is being met, therefore we believe that childcare should be an extension of what the child is already learning at home. We provide a learning experience that focuses on all areas of a child’s development; social, emotional, intellectual, physical and creative. We encourage children to grow in self-respect, self-control, responsibility and independence.

Getting Involved

Contribute any interesting “junk” that you may have. Our arts and crafts corners need constant refilling and your “garbage” could be our treasures. Share your talents or skills with our children and us. “Little things” like knowing how to make bread; hook up electrical wires; put together a puppet theatre; sew; play an instrument; knit; woodwork; tell stories; any thing new happening, are all skills that could enrich our center and the children’s lives.

Daycare Staff

We have a great team of qualified staff, who are ready to take care of your children. Our staff is trained to provide quality service for you and your child. They are responsible for the care of your child while at Capital Child Care Centre. We believe children should not be “baby-sat” but stimulated and developed as well as cared for. Staff will maintain a safe and healthy environment in which your child can grow and learn. Take a little time to get to know them; it is important that you feel comfortable with the staff that looks after your children. Staff is licensed with the Provincial Daycare Qualifications or the City of Edmonton QECC Board (for After School Care) Board. Staff must be qualified or enrolled in either the Early Childhood Education or further education. Sufficient qualified staff will be on the premises at all times to meet the licensing requirements for the number of children present. Criminal record checks are conducted on all staff before hiring. Qualified substitutes will be called in to replace staff that is ill, on vacation, or to supplement the staff when necessary. Our staff has the right to work in a safe and happy environment. We will not tolerate any abusive language or behavior directed at our staff.

Please do not provide any foods that may contain nuts or products belonging to the nut and peanut family; due to allergies these can be very dangerous. AM Snack: A morning snack is provided daily – between the times of 7:45am and 8:30am. At least two of the major food groups are offered for the AM snack. Toddlers, Preschoolers and Kindergarteners Lunch: A hot nutritious lunch, with food covering four major food groups is provided. You can provide your own lunch or supplement the lunch that we provide if you wish, as long it meets the Canadian Food Guide requirements. If it doesn’t meet the requirements your child will either have the Daycare’s lunch or another meal will be given. Special food due to allergies or other restrictions are to be provided by the parents. OSC Lunch: Children in the OSC room are required to bring their own lunches. Staff will heat up food if required. We request parents to send a nutritious lunch. Please do not send any products with nuts due to children having nut allergies.

If your child’s snack from home does not meet the Canadian Food Guide the daycare will supplement a snack for your child. Please put an ice pack in your child’s snack bag because we don’t have room in the refrigerator for all the children. It is advisable to place your child’s snack bag into the snack tote (box). Your child’s snack bag can be found in the snack tote (box) at the end of the day. Please label the snack bag and all containers. NO candy, chips etc. allowed and no nuts at all. PM Snack OSC: A nutritious snack is provided for the OSC room. The snack menu changes weekly so please ask a staff member or refer to the snack calendar posted in the OSC room. Please notify us if you do not wish your child to have certain foods. Snack is given between the times of 3:45pm and 4:15pm

Mailboxes, Mats and Blanket

A mailbox for your child’s personal belongings is provided along with a mat for rest period and a face cloth for the washroom. Please clean out your child’s mailbox periodically and take home items not needed.

Shoes and Clothing

Please send your child in comfortable clothing. Soft soled shoes or slippers should be provided for the children to wear indoors. It is advisable that your child be supplied with an extra set of clothes as important learning activities such as baking; outdoor play, arts, and water play can often leave your child dirty or wet. Accidents can also happen – an extra set of clothes can save the day. Please remember to label all items. Especially in winter, please make sure that your child has suitable outdoor clothing. Outdoor play is a regular part of our program and children need to be dressed accordingly.

Page 6: Riverbend Child’s Pavilion Child... · Capital Child Care Centre Daycare and After-School 5651 Riverbend Rd. Edmonton, A- 1 -B T6H 5K4 (780) 438-4572 (updated on March 17, 2014)

It is important that your child have a pair of indoor shoes to wear while attending our centre. Fire drills are held monthly (even in winter), and require that all children go out “as is”. Proper footwear is necessary for your child’s safety and comfort.

Note: Please make sure that all clothing is clearly labeled!

You must bring in a supply of diapers and wipes for your child. Your child’s diapers are kept in a labeled cubby in the change room. When more supplies are required, the staff will leave a note for you.

Toddlers

If your child uses diaper rash cream or powder, please provide a labeled container

Toy Policy

We ask that you do not allow your child to bring toys from home. Some cuddly toys are allowed for the rest period or quiet time, but these are brought at own risk. Our staff cannot take responsibility for any toys that may be lost or broken, and it is not their responsibility to look for toys that are lost. Toys that are brought for show and tell days may be kept in the child’s mailbox or the office.

We believe that rest is a very important part of the child’s daily program. We observe quiet time minimum two hours a day (Children in Ducklings 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm and Froggies, Bunnies and Butterflies 12:30 -2:30 pm). Children are encouraged to lay quietly at the beginning of this time to allow other children to fall asleep. Children who are still awake after 1:30pm are offered quiet activities. If your child has a special blanket or cuddly toy, you may send it for rest time. Please do not ask us to keep your child up during rest time. If you do not wish your child to take naps our program may not fit your family’s needs.

Rest Policy

Through discipline we help children develop self-control. We want the children to feel strong and self-confident and at the same time respect adults and other children. Children who like themselves and feel esteemed by others rarely act rebellious or sullen. Discipline refers to actions taken by adults to help children control their behavior. These actions include identifying what kinds of behavior are acceptable

Discipline Policy

and helping the child to understand the possible consequences of unacceptable behavior. Giving a child the reason for why he is not allowed to touch or do something helps him in learning to manage his own behavior in the future. Adults help children to develop self-control by being consistent, predictable, and by modeling desirable behavior. The Centre has clear rules that will be followed consistently with each individual child. When making rules we refer to the following guidelines:

• We cannot let children hurt other children • We cannot let children hurt themselves • We cannot let children destroy equipment or property • We cannot let the children bully others in any way

The rooms will be set up and the program planned appropriately in order to prevent undesirable behavior. The teachers will be able to recognize when children are becoming bored and frustrated and when they need to change activities. We will never use sarcasm, physical force, or embarrassment to discipline a child. If a staff member ever becomes frustrated, they shall call upon another staff member to assist them or take over.

Based on the above-mentioned guidelines, teachers take disciplinary action on particular child on reasonable ground using the verbal communication only. Physical & Emotional punishment of children, including hitting and spanking will not be allowed under any circumstance. Other discipline methods that are unacceptable include time outs, harsh or degrading measures that humiliate or undermine a child’s self respect, isolating a child, or withholding basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, bedding or affection. Teacher observes the children’s activities minutely and writes a report of any undisciplined activities of children on parent’s communication book and reports it to the respective parents. Both parents and teacher share some idea and come to the conclusion of how to deal with the matter. If needed parents provide advice in written form on parents communication book. Both parents and teacher will have communication with child. Methods of Handling Disciplinary Actions:

• Staff will communicate to children using positive statements. • Staff will communicate with children by getting down to their eye level and

talking to them in a calm quiet manner about what behavior is expected.

• After the child is reminded of the appropriate behavior, he/she will be redirected through alternatives/ choices to another activity or area.

• Staff will promote and encourage appropriate behavior through knowledgeable program planning, modelling desirable behaviors, and socially acceptable language.

• The goal that we are striving for is for children to take responsibility for their own actions and behaviors.

Any person, while on child care premises, shall not engage in any of the following actions toward children:

• Hit, spank, beat, shake, pinch, or any other measure that produces physical

discomfort. • Cruel, harsh, unusual, humiliating, or frightening methods of discipline,

including threatening the use of physical punishment. • Placement in a locked or dark room. • Public or private humiliation, yelling, or abusive or profane language. • Staff shall not associate disciplinary action or rewards with rest, food, or

toileting. • Staff shall not use time out for any child. • Staff shall not use time out for any purpose.

Discipline Documentation / Communication to Parents:

• Staff shall have ongoing communication between home and day care regarding all aspects of the care of the child.

• Staff shall document any history of recurring discipline problems and subsequent formal record.

• In cases of recurring or severe misbehavior, parents will be contacted so that we may work things out together. If the misbehavior continues the Director may place the child on a two week probationary period. If the situation does not improve, or a plan cannot be implemented for improvement during the probationary period, parents will have one week to withdraw their child from the Day Care.

• Our Day Care staff will act professionally at all times and in accordance with regulation requirements listed in the Child Care Licensing Regulation.

Role of Parent: Parents hand Book contains the one chapter child discipline policy. Parents will be advised to read the discipline policy that will make parents familiar to the procedure of handling the disciplinary actions at our centre. This will be helpful for the parents and

staff work together to resolve the disciplinary matters and lead the children adopt appropriate behavior. Similarly, parents will be advised to have sharing with concerned staff and director regarding their children’s behavior and find the out the appropriate procedure to handle the disciplinary situation. This makes sure that parents have read and understood all the policies of our centre along with parent’s handbook.

Riverbend Child’s Pavilion Day Care will be doing continuous evaluation of children and their progress, overall services provided by daycare through ongoing evaluations. Twice a year we will provide parents with a progress report; in February and August and will let the parents know how well their child is doing. We conduct staff meetings on a monthly basis in which we day care’s activities, program plan and review policies and find ways to improve the program by discussing any issues or concerns. This is all recorded in a Staff Meeting Minute Book and any changes are then implemented. Riverbend Child’s Pavilion Day Care will implement the ongoing evaluation to analyze all incidents and prepare the report using the prescribed form and submit the concerned authorities

Staff are expected to observe children’s play at all times. This is to ensure proper supervision and also as a planning requisite. The Director will tour new staff throughout the Centre to include indoor and outdoor environments. Staff are impressed with the importance of accounting for all children at all times and recording children’s arrival and departure times. Riverbend Child’s Pavilion Daycare Program practices are based on the children’s developmental levels and meet the children’s developmental needs. In the case that a child fails to arrive at an arranged pick-up time or location the following actions will be takes:

Day care Director makes call to child’s parents or emergency contact persons

5 If so advised, available supervisors will search for the child

th

If the child is not located, Director makes call to emergency personnel

A report will be prepared regarding this matter and forwarded to the Licensing Officer and concerned authorities as soon as possible. The general supervision practices adopted by daycare staff are:

• To do daily checklists to make sure that all equipment is in working and safe condition.

• Ensure that they are aware of the indoor and outdoor physical environments. • Children are supervised and counts are done before children leave room or

facility, when children reach to the out door place, before they leave the out door place for Centre and when they arrive at Centre premises before they enter the room to ensure that all children are accounted for.

• Staff also takes portable emergency forms upon leaving the room of care. • They also to fill out a form when leaving that states where they are going and

how many children along with departure time and expected time of arrival back at facility.

• The transportation van has a list of children that are to be picked up from various schools.

• A head count is always done as children enter vehicle as well as leaving vehicle. If a child is not at the designated spot then a call is made to the school; if the school is not aware of child’s location then a call is made to centre to call parents. The parent is then asked if their child has already been picked up.

As a matter of practice, Daycare staff are committed to the following:

• monitoring and supervising the children at all times • knowing where emergency medications, scheduled medications, first aid kits,

and emergency contact numbers are kept or stored • being aware of all emergency procedures • conducting regular and scheduled safety checks of Daycare premises and

equipment • knowing which individuals are authorized to pick-up a child in the place of a

parent recording when children arrive and leave the Daycare Program

Please ensure that you have made arrangements for your child to be picked up by the designated time on your registration form, your caregiver’s hours are scheduled between these times.

Late Policy

The centre closes at 6:00pm. You are required to pick your child up at or before 5:45pm. We will take into consideration late pick up due to RARE and unusual circumstances i.e. car accident, excessive snowstorm or car trouble. However a phone call is greatly appreciated. If we do not receive a phone call, we will charge $1 for every minute over 6pm

. This is payable to the centre.

Throughout the year we will take children off the premises by walking to nearby parks and establishments. Some of our program will require the children to be transported by public or private transportation. When a field trip is planned that requires transportation you will be notified by news letter and/or permission form notifying you of the details regarding the fieldtrips.

Transportation

For children who attend school outside of our centre, i.e. Grade K-6, the centre may transport (transportation authorization required) child to his/her designated school upon completion of the transportation waiver. The Centre meets Transport Canada regulations during transportation. The Centre also has a Safety Fitness Certificate and maintains a yearly Intra Provincial Operating Authority Certificate for the Daycare Van. Should your child require a pick up or drop off outside of the regular time, please submit a written request to the director at least one week in advance.

If we are able to accommodate this request there will be a $5 charge each time. We transport our children by van. Children must wear seatbelts. We also walk maintaining a 1 to 12 ratio. Children are dropped off at their respective schools. Drop Off: The primary staff of the concerned room makes the list of the children who need to be dropped off, then hen s/he handovers the list to the driver. The driver attends the children and verifies the list. After verification driver leads the children to the van. Driver makes sure that all the children in the van have the seat belts on. Driver keeps the record of children who are dropped off. Picking up children: The Day Care van is parked in the school parking lot or in front of the school (van parking area will be known by children). The children are required to wait at the designated meeting place in the school. Driver verifies the list of children who need to be picked up. Late or missing children: The driver waits an extra five minutes, then calls the school office to check if the child was in the school or not. The driver calls the daycare director to verify whether or not the child is supposed to be picked up. Day care director makes calls to parents and verifies the exact information of the child. Day care director makes call back to the driver and driver does accordingly. If the driver does not get any response, he/she moves to the other school. Daycare Director will contact the proper authorities to help locate the missing child. The Centre will make an arrangement to pick him/her up. Unless the daycare drops off the child at school, or the parent has called to notify us of pick-up, we will not be responsible for the pick-up of that child. A list of children being dropped off and picked up are being prepared for each day at the daycare and provided to the driver each day for the record. It is the responsibility of the van driver to check off children when they are dropped off and picked up daily. At the end of the day this information should be filed in the office.

While it is preferable to avoid becoming involved in an access dispute, the protection and best interest of the child will always be our first priority. Access disputes between parents or other family members may be complicated by the fact that legal

custody of the child has not yet been determined by a court or formal agreement such as a consent order. The following guidelines will be applied when deciding whether or not to release the child:

• If you have any custody and access arrangements by way of consent or court order, we request a copy for your child’s records, however it is not our responsibility to interpret, determine and enforce these orders.

• If the child’s mother or father that is listed on the registration form and/or we have met comes to pick the child up, we will release the child to that parent. This will include anyone that is listed on the authorized pick up list on your child’s registration form.

• If you have sole custody and can provide a document that clearly defines the non-custodial parent’s access we will not release the child. Should the situation arise where the non-custodial parent comes to pick the child up, we will ask for supporting documentation for access and contact the sole custodial parent and the RCMP if necessary.

In these circumstances it is very important that you have regular communication with your child’s teacher and the Director.

The centre regularly takes pictures of children for crafts, fieldtrips, memory books news letters etc. If you do not want your child’s picture to appear anywhere or be published, please indicate this on your registration form and make sure your child’s teacher knows.
