Aswill be noted, a majority of the earlier settlers inRitchie County were descendants of families who were in thesouthwestern section of Pennsylvania and in Monongalia,Harrison, and HampshireCounties, Virginia, prior to l785.

Ritchie County, Virginia (nowW. Va.), was created in l843from parts of Harrison (Created in l784 from Monongalia),Wood (Created in l798 from Harrison), and Lewis (Created in1816 from Harrison) counties.
