COVID-19: Highlights and Situation Overview

• Worldwide, there have been over 16.7 million reported cases, and more than

660,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Globally, many countries are seeing a

second rise in case numbers. In North America, the resurgence of infections

was seen in recent weeks, mostly driven by new outbreaks in the US. In Europe,

Spain’s resurgence in cases has sparked fears of a more widespread rise in

cases. In Asia, Japan’s capital, Tokyo is driving a second increase in cases

nationwide. In Latin America and Africa, cases continue to rise as South Africa,

Egypt, and Brazil remain the largest regional hotspots.

• Six vaccine candidates have entered Phase 3 and Phase 2/3 combined

clinical trials, involving large-scale efficacy tests. In the United States, the phase

3 mRNA-1273 study is targeting 30,000 healthy volunteers across 89 sites in the

US. The BNT162b2 candidate in Phase 2/3 is recruiting 30,000 healthy volunteers

from the US, Argentina, Brazil, and Germany. Two inactivated vaccine

candidates developed in China are undergoing studies in Brazil and the United

Arab Emirates, with an estimated recruitment number of around 10,000. In the

UK, the AZD1222 candidate is now in Phase 2/3 in England and Phase 3 in Brazil

and South Africa. Study locations were chosen on the basis of there being large

ongoing outbreaks with the consequent potential ability to determine a

significant protective effect of the vaccine candidate under trial within a

suitable timeframe. In Australia, the live-attenuated BCG vaccine previously

approved for tuberculosis is now under Phase 3 trial for COVID-19, with

estimated recruitment of 10,000 healthcare workers in Australia.

• Indonesia's official tally of COVID-19 cases has reached 102,051 (the highest in

the ASEAN Region) after the government recorded 1,748 new cases on

Tuesday (July 28). The latest figures continue the trend of increasing numbers

of confirmed cases in Jakarta in recent weeks following the city's decision to

gradually relax restrictions and reopen businesses and offices under health

protocols from June 4. However, the national COVID-19 task force head said

on Monday that the government would allow the reopening of schools outside

green zones or the areas with the lowest risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Education and Culture Ministry will further announce which areas would be

permitted to reopen their schools.

• Philippines’ health authorities warned hospitals and infirmaries’ risk getting

overwhelmed as admissions are rising for COVID-19, including other illnesses.

According to Department of Health’s authority, COVID and non-COVID beds

are close to 50% capacity nationwide, falling in the Health Department’s

“warning zone”. While bed occupancy and ventilator usage nationwide are

“manageable,” intensive care and ward beds are in the higher “danger zone”

category for the capital region and neighboring provinces south of Manila with

occupancy above 70%. As of July 28, the Philippines added 1,678 new cases,

bringing total count to 83,673, the second-highest in the ASEAN region.

• Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports is reassuring Thais by explaining that all

foreigners, regardless of their status or origins, will have to serve a mandatory

14-day quarantine, at least “in the foreseeable future”. Thailand officials are

currently preparing Phase 6 of the re-opening of the country, loosening the

restrictions imposed in April. The next phase, posed for introduction in early

August, will allow migrant workers, film production crews and Thailand Elite Visa

holders to return to the country amongst other categories that have previously

been approved for a return to the country. Thailand has recorded no locally

transmitted cases of COVID-19 for over 2 months but continues to identify newly

infected Thai repatriates who have flown back from overseas. All are being

identified whilst serving their 14-day quarantine.

• Vietnam's government today (July 29) warned health authorities in the capital

Hanoi to prepare for a potential outbreak of COVID-19 after media reported

the first suspected coronavirus case in months. A staff member at a pizza

restaurant in Hanoi who recently returned from Danang tested positive for

COVID-19 according to a media report. It added that authorities had locked

down the restaurant and disinfected the premises.

Travel Advisories (new update/s)

• Indonesia: State-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) has

started providing rapid testing at several train stations in a bid to boost ridership

and ensure safe protocols for passengers. Passengers of long-distance trains

are required to bring negative COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or

non-reactive rapid test results that are valid for 14 days at the time of the trip.

• The Malaysian and Singapore governments have agreed to re-open the Straits

of Johor border (the land bridges linking Malaysia and Singapore) from August

17. These agreements allow up to 2,500 commuters to travel between both

countries for the purpose of work or official business. Those who fall into

Reciprocal Green Lane and Periodic Commuting Arrangement categories can

submit applications from August 10, with travel commencing on August 17.

• Vietnam: As of July 28, Vietnam government has suspended all flights to and

from Danang for 15 days after at least 14 cases of COVID-19 have been

detected in the city. All bus and train services to and from Danang have also

been suspended.

Cases and Deaths as of 29 July 2020

• As of July 29 (2PM, GMT+8), worldwide, there were 16,771,667 confirmed cases,

including 665,519 deaths. Globally, Case Fatality Ratio (CFR)* is 3.97.

• In China, there were 87,357 confirmed cases with 4,664 deaths, including

deaths in Hong Kong (23) and Taiwan (7). Confirmed cases in China include

confirmed cases in Hong Kong (2,885), Macau (46), and Taiwan (467).

• 248,588 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the ASEAN region

with a total of 7,003 deaths.
