The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 states
“Risk Assessment is the cornerstone of health and safety legislation and is absolutely essential to a safe working environment”

So, what is a Risk Assessment?
“The identification of hazards, the calculation and reduction of risk either completely or to an
acceptable level.”

Risk Assessment – The Jargon
Hazard – Something with the potential to cause harm Risk – The likelihood that someone will be harmed by the
hazard1. High Risk – likely to cause serious injury or consequence,
will be or need structured control measures2. Medium Risk – chance of injury or consequence, may be
or may need some control3. Low Risk – minimal chance of injury or consequence,
probably will not need control measures
