Rising Star award recipients Elise Cismesia, Maria D'Ambrose, Brianna Imgruet and Krisna Mucha were joined in concert by the first-place winners of the DGMC Piano Fesval Junior and Senior Compeons and by an award-winnings Downers Grove South Clarinet Duo, the Downers Grove North Jazz Combo and the Herrick Middle School Chamber Strings Each year the Downers Grove Music Club presents Rising Star Music Awards to District 99 juniors chosen for their hard work and accomplishments in band, choir or orchestra. The $400 awards are to be used toward tuion for a summer musi- cal educaonal experience. The 2016 Rising Star Awards were made possible by the DGMC fundraiser "A Notable Celebraon of the Arts" and by the generous support of the 2016-2017 Friends of the DGMC. Applications now open for Bulut Memorial Fund awards Applicaons will be accepted through April 28 for Private Lesson Awards made available by the Shelby Bulut Memorial Fund. The awards will cover the expense of three months of private lessons for District 58 elementary and middle school string students. Highly movated fiſth, sixth and seventh grade students enrolled in the District 58 orchestra program are eligible to apply for the awards, which will provide for weekly lessons under the instrucon of a local professional string musician. Students applying for the awards must be new to private lessons and looking to expand upon the instrucon they receive through school. Applicaon forms are available through District 58 orchestra teachers and must be completed and returned to the teachers by April 28. Award winners will be announced in May. The Shelby Bulut Memorial Fund was established through the generosity of the family of Shelby Bulut, a Downers Grove music educator and fervent music supporter. Mrs. Bulut believed in the "value of music in one's life early on, and the im- portance it played in the development of a rich community," her family wrote in making the donaon to the DGMC. Recipients of the Downers Grove Music Club's 2016 Rising Star awards performed in concert Tuesday, April 4, at the Down-ers Grove Public Library, 1050 Curtiss St. All DGMC members were encouraged to attend this very special annual event.

Musical notes

New Member

Welcome to new member Patricia Brindle of Downers Grove. Patricia teaches orchestra, cello and strings (as well as golf) and also performs.

Memorial donation

The DGMC donated Messiah: Understanding and Performing Handel's Masterpiece by Helmuth Rilling to the Downers Grove Public Library in memory of long-time club member Mary Ellen Moravec Newsom.

House Concert raises $1,500

The March 24 House Concert was a sell-out, raising more than $1,500 for DGMC programs. Thanks to Jennifer Leckie, violin; Steve Sigurdson, cello; and Chris Garofalo, piano and harpsichord, for a wonderful evening of music.

Board candidates announced The DGMC Nominating Committee announces the following candidates for five open board positions for the 2017-2018 club year. The election of officers will be held immediately following the final concert of the season on May 7 in the Downers Grove Public Library.

Nominees are: President: Gloria Salazar Secretary: Remus Badea Member-at-Large: Dan Moroz Member-at-Large: Chris Garofalo

Thanks to the candidates and also to the hard-working members of the Nominating Committee Charlotte Ewing, Cindy Jensen and Mike Surratt.

Final concert of the season is May 7

The 2016-17 Downers Grove Public Library-Downers Grove Music Club season concludes with A Pairing of the Arts at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 7, in the Downers Grove Public Library meeting room. The program will feature club musicians performing songs inspired by literary charac-ters, settings and time periods.

The concert is free, but patrons are asked to register to ensure seats for all who wish to attend. You may register on our website through the DGMC Event Calendar by clicking the RSVP button next to the concert or by calling the library at 630-960-1200.

Cantores Community Choir: This non-audition group is open to anyone high school age and older who enjoys sing-ing, wants to learn more about music and wants to perform a wide range of musical styles and genres. Under the direc-tion of Belford Hernandez, this choir performs a wide variety of four-part musical literature and styles. Cantores Com-munity Choir is a member of DGMC. Downers Grove Choral Society: John Patrick Rakes, artistic director Music of the Stage will be presented at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 23 at First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove. The program will feature a variety of musical performances from the theater, including opera choruses, Gilbert and Sullivan patter songs and musical portraits of George and Ira Gershwin. A discussion will pre-cede the program at 3:15 p.m. Advance tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Ticket prices are $2 more when purchased at the door. The SBC Voice Competition Finals featuring Klughardt's Symphony No. 4 in C minor, op. 57 will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 5211 Carpenter St., Downers Grove. As many as eight final-ists will sing lyric solos and opera arias with orchestral accompaniment. Come and vote for your favorite singer! Individ-ual tickets are available at the door for $22 for adults, $19 for seniors 65 and older and $7 for students under 21, with children six and under free when accompanied by an adult.
