RISE Summer Math Academy A District and College Partnership Catherine Breen, Sybil Brown and Karen Hogans May 15, 2015 Lake County LSSC - Leesburg and South Lake (Clermont) campuses Sumter County LSSC Sumter Center Lake-Sumter State College SESSION GOAL Share information about the Planning the Academy Running the Academy Data/Results BACKGROUND Lake Sumter State College (LSSC) Awarded $2.9 million Title III Part F Strengthening Institutions Grant Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2018 LSSC Title III Goal 1 Curriculum and Delivery Redesign (Math Emporiums) To increase student retention and degree completion by transforming the traditional math class to a new modularized, technologically enhanced curricular approach that fully supports a more individualized learning modality. Goal 1 Math Emporiums Funded by Title III Grant Redesigned Developmental, Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra Emporiums operational on 2 of the 3 LSSC locations 3 rd Emporium to open spring 2016 (year 3 of grant) LSSC Title III Goal 1 LSSC Title III Goal 2 Partnerships & RISE Summer Math Academy To facilitate partnerships to accelerate high school students to college-ready status, while providing them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to accelerate to dual enrollment college credit math courses before high school graduation; thereby increasing first-time-in-college (FTIC), at-risk students success rates in college credit math courses, retention, and degree completion. Goal 2 Partnerships & RISE Summer Math Academy Funded by: Lake-Sumter State College Administration led by President Dr. Charles Mojock $10,000 Collaboration and Alignment mini-grant from Florida College System Foundation Contributions from local businesses and citizens LSSC Title III Goal 2 Joint Professional Development Days (2 each year) LSSC math faculty and Sumter District math teachers Share math course sequencing and pathways Introduction of RISE Summer Math Academy Promote faculty collaboration on math standards and course alignment PERT Math Review Increase college math facultys knowledge of Mathematics Florida Standards LSSC Title III Goal 2 (Partnership) = + Goal 2 - Summer Math Academy What is the RISE Summer Math Academy? The RISE Summer Math Academy is a 12-day college-prep math academy and social experience designed to prepare students for: dual enrollment status in math, higher level high school and college math classes, and success at the college-credit math level. RISE Summer Math Academy Target Population Rising 11 th and 12 th grade students NOT College Ready in mathematics South Sumter High School and Wildwood Middle High School Academic Middle Sumter District Schools Sumter District High Schools: South Sumter High School (about 200 graduates per year) Wildwood Middle High School (about 80 graduates per year) The Villages High School (public charter) Percent of 2013 Sumter Graduates: Sumter District State Enrolled at a Florida public postsecondary institution fall %51.4% Enrolled at a Florida 2-year college fall %33.0% Enrolled at a state university in Florida fall %17.6% Successfully completing Intermediate Algebra among those enrolled in MAT 1033 fall %66.4% Data from Florida High School Feedback Report 2013 Academic Middle Criteria Un-weighted grade point average PERT (Florida college placement test) Math score SAT Math PSAT Math 38 or above AVID* student ETS or CROP student** * Advancement Via Individual Determination. Circuit Judge Michael Johnson SECO Energy Heart of Florida Environmental SGA cooked hot dogs and hamburgers 2014 RISE Summer Math Academy Data 40 students attended at least one day 37 students received Certificate of Excellence 20 students scored a 114 or higher on PERT Math on day 11 or 12 of RISE 4 of the 20 students scored a 123 or higher on PERT Math (one with a score of 142) 8 students scored between on the PERT Math 2014 RISE Summer Math Academy Celebration Lessons Learned Modifications planned for RISE Summer 2015: 1) Begin RISE Summer Math Academy earlier in June 2) Decrease the length of the Pathbuilder or create two 3) Integrate the LSSC DE Admissions Application and required new student orientation into the academy 4) Increase staffing 5) Use completers of program to help recruit and assist in future years Contact Information
