Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another home game at the B.E.P stadium against Dunstable Town and in doing so welcome my friend Gareth Jackson and his staff. As I write this I will unfortunately be keeping up with the game from afar hav-ing falling victim to Covid which I can honestly say is a very nasty virus. The team are in good hands though with Paul and Jon who will ensure we are well prepared for todays challenge. Although our visitors haven't had the best of starts it's early days they have strengthened the squad with some good signings over the last week, their narrow defeat against Hadley on Tuesday night was a testimony of their improvement which I am sure will continue. In recent weeks our squad has been tested to the limit with injury and suspensions but slowly we are seeing players return meaning selections will become quite tricky. We are pleased to add Liam Enver-Marum to our squad from Thame United, I have known Liam since he was a kid at Reading and having plyed his trade mainly in the top two tiers of non league football have never had the chance to sign him until now so I am very pleased to get a striker of his pedigree and know he will be a huge asset to the team. We are now very happy with the group we have and feel confident we can push on and do really well. Tuesday nights Derby against my old club in the new guise of Aylesbury Vale Dy-namos proved to demonstrate how well we can play, our passing and movement was really good and the only criticism was we should have scored more in the sec-ond half. Marcus showed yet again how talented he is with a hatrick playing down the middle and there was also a master class display from Kieron Schmidt in mid-field. On the injury front apart from the long term injury to Alex Sethi, we are aiming to get Aaron Jewell on the pitch for the development game on the 14th September and hope to have Lewis Patrick back for the Vase game next Saturday. With AK back from suspension and Davis just one more week to go we go into this next run of games in good shape. Enjoy the game today

Best wishes Mark

The club was established in October 1883, and were founder members of the Bedfordshire FA the fol-lowing year. In their first competitive match they lost 4–3 to Luton Montrose in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup after being 3–0 up. However, the following season the club won the competition. In 1950 the club joined the Metropolitan League, and in 1956–57 they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually losing 3–1 at Margate. In 1961 Dunstable switched to the United Counties League, but left after two seasons to rejoin the Met-ropolitan League, becoming one of only three first teams playing in Division Two. The following season saw the club moved into Division One, but in 1965 they were admitted to Division One of the Southern League. League restructuring saw them placed in the new Division One North for the 1971–72 season. They were moved into Division One South the following season and finished bottom of the division. Transferred back to Division One North for the 1973–74 season, they finished bottom of the table again. Barry Fry had become Dunstable manager towards the end of the 1973–74 season, and with chairman Keith Cheeseman providing him with blank cheques, Fry attracted several big name players to the club, most notably Jeff Astle and George Best, as well as arranging a friendly match against his former club Manchester United. Although Best only played in two friendly matches and made no competitive appearances for the club, Astle stayed at the club for that season and scored 34 goals as they finished as Division One South runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. However, huge debts caused the club to fold midway through the 1975–76 season; a new club under the name Dunstable was formed to take over their fixtures. Despite finishing eighth in the league, they were demoted to Division One North. Dunstable were transferred to Division One South for the 1978–79 season, and the following year league restructuring saw them placed in the Southern Division. They remained in the division until the end of the 1993–94 season, after which they folded. The club was re-established in 1998 and joined Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League. After winning the division in 1999–2000 without losing a match, they were promoted to the Senior Division. The following season saw them finish as Senior Division runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. The club went on to win the Premier Division in 2002–03 and were promoted to Division One North of the Isthmian League. With the formation of the Conference North and South, a fifth-place finish in 2003–04 was enough for Dunstable to be promoted, although they were transferred to the Premier Division of the Southern League. However, they were relegated to the Western Division at the end of the 2004–05 season, which saw them finish in the bottom three. The following season saw them finish in the relegation zone, but the club were reprieved due to FA restructuring and moved to Division One Midlands. However, they were relegated back to the Spartan South Midlands League at the end of the 2008–09 season following a 13-point deduction. In 2012–13 Dunstable won the Spartan South Midlands League without losing a match, as well as win-ning the league's Challenge Trophy and the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. After promotion to Division One Central of the Southern League, they went on to win the division at the first attempt, as well as the league's Champions Trophy and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 2017–18 the club finished bottom of the Premier Division and were relegated to Division One Central. The following season saw them finish bottom of Division One Central, resulting in relegation to the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League.

RAMBLING RANGER

Good afternoon all and welcome to Dunstable Town Football Club and their sup-porters for today’s Spartan South Midland League Premier Division fixture. Dunsta-ble have not had the best of starts to this season but rumour has it that their squad has been strengthened by several new signings earlier in the week and that was evident during their narrow one nil defeat to fancied Hadley midweek. Rangers will be hoping to continue their good form and welcome new signing, Liam Enver-Marum into today’s squad. Liam is an experienced striker who began his career at Reading before playing for Cambridge United. Much of his career has been in the National League and National South with Woking, Ebbsfleet, Maidstone, Basing-stoke and Forest Green Rovers amongst others. Such a signing shows our intent and I am sure you will all join me in welcoming Liam to our club. I was re-reading a book recently about Brian Clough and when I mentioned this to a friend, he commented that in his view there are no characters in the game anymore. This got me thinking and I have decided that whilst I sort of agree, I would also ex-pect that there probably are plenty of characters in the modern game, I just don’t know any. And besides, who gets to decide what constitutes a character anyway? However, as self-appointed ‘Character Appointees’ the pair of us did start to remi-nisce about former characters and as you would expect we came up with plenty of the usual suspects. Clough, of course, was top of my list, plus his side-kick Peter Taylor. Also on my list was Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, Stan Bowles, Bestie, Robin Friday (read the book, mad as a badger with a spoon), Mick Channon, Lawrie McMenemy’ and Nobby Stiles. In later years there has been Steve Claridge, Barry Fry, Stuart Pearce, Wrighty, Vinnie Jones, Gazza; I could go on, and I’m sure that you, dear reader, could add plenty more. But although these people are all rec-ognised characters from bye-gone days, I know none of them personally so I have to take other’s word for it. I can however speak of characters that I’ve personally known in the game and whilst they are hardly household names, they are certainly characters. First up I would say that our very own Chairman and Vice Chairmen are worthy candidates, especially ‘Nibbo’, a well-known figure in local football circles. Quite a number of players I have played with back in the day would also fit the bill. Chris ‘CJ’ Wikins of Aylesbury United and Chesham fame was a big practical joker, well known for mixing his team-mates clothing up when they were warming up, filling their shoes with all manner of unmentionables etc. Local football manager, Lawrie Logan was a typical ‘Scouser’ with a ready wit and an unusual management style. I particularly remember him telling one player, known affectionately as ‘Lurch’, as he carried out his team talk, ‘Lurch, you’re gifted, you’re talented.......you’re dropped’.

Lawrie wore a wig for a while and when retrieving a ball from a hedge during one game, he returned without the wig, the hairy article left swinging on a thorn bush. Lawrie, as cool as you like, ignored the laughter and fetched the wig, returning it to its rightful place on top of his head! My favourite local character however, has to be Roger ‘Gutty’ Ridgeway. Now the Ridgeway’s were a big family from the poor end of Monks Risborough and were all keen footballers and fighters, especially the girls! They could look after themselves when needed and I have witnessed Roger scrap-ping on many an occasion, and when called upon he had lightning fists. In one match an opposing player was winding his brother, Fred up by kicking him and el-bowing him. Now, what the guy didn’t know was that you shouldn’t do that to Fred because an angry Fred could produce serious consequences. Realising this, Roger decided to get help and soon the wind-up merchant was prone on the floor, Roger sat astride him, raining blows down. The referee rushed over yelling for him to stop and Roger’s reply was ‘You don’t realise Ref, I’m saving his f*****g life, if Freddy gets hold of him, he’ll kill him!’. Now he was a character. By the way, I met that Jimmy Bullard the other day and he is just as you’d expect, a great laugh and a true character and he definitely gets on my list. Enjoy the game and see you in the ATW Bar after the game. RR

PRESSURE in football is supposedly reserved for managers, players and even referees – but there can’t be anyone who has to perform when it really matters like the physio. Most of the time we’re used to seeing them dash on for minor knocks and strains. A bit of treat-ment, a blast of the freeze spray, a dab of the magic sponge, a squirt of the water bottle and on we go (I’m sure it’s roughly that easy!). Yet nobody is in the bar after saying, “Physio had a great game today”. It’s probably how they prefer it. Unseen, just going about their business quietly and efficiently. But I’m here to argue physios – and other medical staff at games – are the most important people in a football ground. Because when something really goes wrong, they are front and centre – often with hundreds, if not thousands, of eyes staring right at them. Anyone who has been in a ground when a bad injury occurs knows it can be quite a scary time – especially anything involving the head, neck or spine. I’ll never forget hearing a striker’s leg break in a challenge at the other end of a ground. Or seeing a player having a seizure on the ground. But the medical experts can’t get caught up in all that. Keeping calm, assessing the situation, they go through their processes, using all their knowledge from years of studying and observing to give the best possible care to a player. Already this season we’ve seen cases of games abandoned because of really bad injuries. Last season Darlington’s Nicky Hunt suffered a head injury in a National League North game against Boston United. Darlo therapist Danny O’Connor – who was helped by the Pilgrims’ medical staff as well – spoke after about the situation that even saw Hunt stop breathing twice. The team stayed in position for hours waiting for an ambulance, keeping Hunt comfortable. “You kind of go into robot mode when something like this happens,” he told NE Sport News. “It’s a bit strange because you’re just dealing with the situation and everything else becomes irrelevant. “It’s quite interesting really because when I’ve spoken to people afterwards the majority say they wouldn’t know what to do in that situation, whereas I felt quite comfortable knowing what to do and when to do it, but that just comes down to experience.” It’s a remarkable responsibility to take on – I’d wager the majority of us couldn’t do a job like that. Last month Hallam physio Shannon Brooks drew high praise for her expertise and care when as-sistant referee Andrew Jarvis fell in during a game. Her quick actions saved his life and has led Shannon to fundraise for defibrillators having seen the importance of one being available first-hand. Thankfully, incidents like this tend to be few and far between. Hopefully at your game today you have no real need to notice any of the medical staff. But let’s keep showing them the appreciation they deserve. Matthew Badcock
