Assalam Alaikum wa Rahmat Allahi wa Barakatuhu, My name is Nader Hakim, and I have the honor and privilege of serving as the 2010-2010 President of the Muslim Students’ Association. What makes any MSA special isthe community it offers to each and every Muslim on campus, regardless of their home community. The University of Michigan is particularly blessed with one of the best Muslim communities in the country; it is made up of members whose drive and dedication fuel a year of retreats, discussions, halaqas, qiyams, socials and much, much more. More importantly, however, our members have managed to build a brotherhood and sisterhood that is unparalleled by any other student organization on campus.

All college students, and perhaps Muslims especially, can attest to the changes and challenges that fill four years of university study with new experiences and relationships. Muslim students at a leading public institution sometimes find it difficult to balance studies and per-sonal development. Under these circumstances, a freshman can find the wide variety of clubs and organizations on campus overwhelming, but few can rival the impact an MSA can have on an individu-al’s development. MSA Alumni continually cite the MSA as the breeding ground of their most profound personal changes and the beginning of their closest friendships. While there are many worthwhile causes to dedicate oneself to on campus, one would be hard pressed to find a cause more worthy of pursuing than seeking the pleasure of Allah (swt) by serving others and depicting the messageof our beautiful religion to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The wide variety of activities offered by the MSA insure that there is a niche for every member. The MSA is composed of nine committees that are all crucial to the success and im-pact an MSA can have, but it takes much more than 19 people to put it all together. From Community Affairs, which organizes community service projects, to Eduction Committee, which organizes spiri-tual events; every committee can use an extra hand. I end by sincerely asking every person with an ounce of interest in helping to build this community to take the step that could shape your college career. Attend an iftaar at the beginning of the year, hang out at a social, or plan an event. In time, you will inshAllah experience the blessing and barakah our community has. We are looking forward to meeting each and every one of you!

7. You met a genie, what are you three wish-es?: One, to be like Ebrahim Verachia, Two, ask for some of Omar Malas’ witty/clever jokes, Three, ask for some of Kashif Ahmed’s creativity and humble spirit.

8. Best thing about MSA: The people, what else?9. Favorite childhood t.v. show: Recess, I look back and laugh at every ridiculous scenario, I like King Bob a lot :)

If there was any person dead/alive you could meet, who is it and what would be one question you would ask them?: Omar Ibn Al-Khatab, he has been my favorite companion since childhood. I would probably ask him how he managed to maintain the perfect balance between leadership and humility. Also, I’d probably ask him to join me for a game of chess. (In this scenario, I’m not a girl and it’s totally appropriate.)7. You met a genie, what are you three wishes?: 1. That he sing me a song like the one Aladdin got. 2. An endless supply of books. 3. When I was young, my parents encouraged me to enter whichever profession I wanted: Opthalmology, Radiology, Cardiology, Endocrinol-ogy...(You see what I did there?)3. Where you’re from: East Lansing. But I went to Michigan, not MSU, ‘cause even though green and white are both sunnah colors, I REALLY like blue.4. Year in school:Junior...not much to that one.5. Favorite place to eat in Ann Arbor: Bob’s Bacon and Beer Bar (now fully Thabeeha!)6. If there was any person dead/alive you could meet, who is it and what would be one question you would ask them?: I’d meet Imam al-Ghazali and ask him if he had change for a dollar.7. You met a genie, what are you three wishes?: Well, asssuming you can’t wish for more wishes, you’d start by wishing for Jannah. Otherwise if you wait till your last wish, you might end up accidentally saying something like, “I wish I had more time to think.” With the after-life locked down, I’d definitely wish for a zipline between the roof of TP and the Fishbowl to help ease my commute. The final wish would likely be related to toaster-ovens...that’s as specific as I’m gonna get. 8. Best think about MSA: Nader Hakim, hands down.9. Favorite childhood t.v. show: Dora the Explorer.
