RIS Staff everywhere recognize the

important contributions parents

make toward a child’s success in the

school. There is no question about it

- success at school begins at home.

We depend on the parents to assist

us in helping the students attain

success. The following ways have

been proven to enhance the testing

abilities of students:

Make sure students attend

school regularly and on time.

Assist students in understanding

and completing homework

assignments.

Read to your children regularly

and encourage them to read

daily.

Expose your children to

Self Confidence is the first

requisite to great undertakings.

Greetings RIS Family,

My name is Jill Shaw, I am from Nova

Scotia Canada and this is my fourth school

year at RIS. I have excitedly watched the

school grow and this year there are many

great improvements in technology and

teaching innovations. As our RIS family

grows we are continually looking for ways

to better serve our students and I am

looking forward to implementing Active

In grade four there is a strong emphasis on

community and cooperative learning that

ensures each child’s unique learning style is

nurtured and respected in every class. I

feel building a close relationship with

students and parents will help each child

grow and develop. We are anticipating a

great year at RIS with a highly qualified

Third Grade Teacher Hello Parents!

My name is Julia Lee and I am the third

grade teacher at RIS. I feel extremely

privileged to have the responsibility of

being your child’s teacher this year. I was

raised in the state of New Jersey in the

United States. Upon receiving my degrees

in English and Elementary Education, I

came to Korea, where I have been teaching

for the past two years.

We will be studying and working on many

new and exciting things this year. Third

grade is a year of transition from the

development of skills to the development

of independence. It is a time for students to

begin to assume responsibility for their

education and become life-long learners.

Our curriculum, which is aligned to the

National Standards, will ensure that your

child is well equipped with the tools to

become as successful as he/she can be.

In Language Arts, reading instruction is at

the individual student’s level through small

group daily reading lessons. Students

participate in daily Guided Reading lessons

using leveled books. Third graders spend

10-15 minutes daily in D.E.A.R. (Drop

Everything And Read) time during the

school day. All students are required to

keep a reading log at home that will be

signed by the guardian. Children need to

read daily in order to improve their

comprehension skills and fluency/reading

rate.

Third grade strives to incorporate writing

Fourth Grade Teacher

across the curriculum in all subject areas.

In their writing notebooks, students will

write about different topics so they can

have many opportunities to write and to

improve their confidence in writing. We

will work on the writing process, which

includes brainstorming, drafting, editing,

revising, publishing, and peer feedback. We

will also being working on the 6+1 traits of

writing.

In Math, students will learn problem

solving strategies throughout the year. We

will be focusing on word problems.

Students will do math drills, in which they

have to try to complete as many math

problems as they can, given a time limit of

one minute. Through this daily drill,

students will be able to really hone their

math facts.

In Science, students will mainly investigate

living things and the earth around us.

Through observations, hypotheses, and

various experiments, students will be able

to use a hands-on approach to learning

science.

In Social Studies, we will learn about the

community and different cultures, and also

delve into a bit of economics, citizenship,

government, and geography.

As I’ve communicated before, I believe that

a strong home-to-school connection is vital

in your child’s success. I hope that we can

work as a team to help your child reach the

stars this year.

The only time you`ll

find success before

work is in the

dictionary.

Hi Parents! My name is Michelle Maher

and I am from the United States. I am this

year’s Middle School Social Studies teacher

at The Rainbow International School and I

am excited to be part of the team! I have a

MA in Secondary History Education from

the NEAG School of Education at the

University of Connecticut. I believe that

Middle School Social Studies is about

equipping my students with the necessary

information and skills to help them excel in

situations outside of the classroom. This

year I hope to build and add to the

foundation of basic skills students need for

secondary and higher education and the

real world. My Social Studies Curriculum

will focus on communication skills such as

writing and speaking; research skills such

as collecting, organizing, and interpreting

data; decisions making skills such as

considering alternatives and consequences;

interpersonal skills such as seeing others'

points of view, accepting responsibility,

and dealing with conflict; and reading skills

such as reading pictures, books, maps,

charts, and graphs. My goal is that by the

end of the year all of my students will be

capable of thinking critically about

complex societal problems and global

problems.

Hello Parents! My name is Ms. Sawlor and

I will be the fifth grade teacher this year. I

am from Canada and have lived in Korea

for three years. This will be my sixth year

of teaching and I am very excited to be

working for a second year here at Rainbow

International School.

My Grade 5 classroom is place where I

strive to help all students reach their

learning potential. We are a community

within the RIS community. Grade 5 is a

place where students are encouraged to

participate and offer their opinions, while

respecting those of others. Our classroom is

a community where sharing, teamwork and

cooperation are constantly promoted. I

believe that students learn best when they

feel a sense of belonging and are

comfortable taking risks, which is the

environment I strive to provide to all

students in my class.

While studying together, we will be

covering a curriculum that will prepare all

students for graduation from elementary

and into middle school. Students will cover

a curriculum that will allow them to

develop their skills in all content areas.

Throughout the year our grade 5 learning

objectives will be met through a variety of

teaching strategies that will include all

student learning styles.

I look forward to teaching all of your

children this year. I am excited to discover

each student’s culture, background and

learning style. I also look forward to

working together with you to ensure all my

grade five students have a successful and

enjoyable fifth grade experience!

I spent my own middle school years filling

up the pages of blank journals and reading

books like The Great Gatsby by F. Scott

Fitzgerald and A Wrinkle in Time by

Madeleine L’Engle. The hours of my youth

spent reading and writing served as an

excellent platform to be your new middle

school English language arts teacher for the

2011-2012 school year. I came to Seoul in

May 2010 after earning my teacher

certification at Western Michigan

University in English and communication

for grades 6-12. Prior to that, I received my

bachelor’s degree in English and journalism

from Siena Heights University in 2002.

I’ve spent the years since graduation

substitute teaching in a diverse range of

U.S. school systems and writing and editing

for various newspapers and magazines.

When I’m not in the classroom or preparing

lessons, I like to take photographs of the

unique character of Seoul, cook spicy dishes

and bake cookies, and practice yoga. At RIS

I intend to fearlessly guide our students as

they continue to become proficient

communicators. I anticipate a successful

year with this bright batch of students.

Cheers! Ms. Jones

Interesting Mercury Facts Mercury is one of the few metals that is liquid at ordinary temperatures. It is a

shiny, mobile liquid, silver-white in color. Mercury has many properties that make it useful as a mercury thermometer. For

example, mercury expands and contracts evenly when heated or cooled. It also

remains liquid over a wide range of temperatures. These properties make mercury an ideal component of

thermometers, barometers, and other

scientific instruments.

The waning days of summer mark the beginning of a new school year at RIS. This is an exhilarating time for faculty and staff, and while we warmly welcome back returning students and excitedly greet those joining us for the first time, students in some nations throughout the world are more than halfway through their academic year! It’s the beginning of our school year, but it isn’t the start for students the world over. Let us take a moment’s reprieve from the pencil-sharpening, the note-taking and the book-reading to glance at some of the practices of education systems across the globe:

In Central America in the country of Costa Rica, students begin school in

February and end in December. They enjoy a two-month vacation in

between, and a few weeks off in July.

In the African nation of Kenya, the school year is divided into three 13-

week terms. Students enjoy a one-month vacation during each break of

the trimester.

Students in Russia remain together in the same class from grades one to

ten. Tenth grade is the last year of mandatory education, after which

students may elect to carry on in the eleventh and twelfth grades to

learn vocational skills or study for university entrance exams.

French students have a half-day of Saturday school, but they are free

from study on Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school students have a

two-hour break for lunch each day.

Summer vacation for Australian students lasts from mid-December to

late January. Since Australia is in the southern hemisphere, it

experiences summer while the northern hemisphere is in the throes of

winter.

So when RIS breaks for winter vacation this year, many other schools will be ending their academic year and preparing to advance to the next grade! Luckily for us, we’ll have another five months after that to thrive in our learning community.

Grade 1-3 ESL Teacher Hello! My name is Ms. Ross. I grew up in

the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, on

beautiful island called Cape Breton. I

graduated from Saint Mary's University in

Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2006 with a

Bachelor of Arts Degree Major in English. I

moved to Seoul, South Korea four and a

half years ago as an ESL instructor. My

passion for teaching has only increased

with each new experience here, and like

the bright and talented students I teach, my

mind has been a sponge absorbing every bit

of information and instruction I have

received.

As an educator, my goal is to make a

difference in the lives of my students by

investing both my heart and mind in

Grade 1-3 ESL Teacher

teaching. I strive to be compassionate and

realize that my students’ success is not

limited to the tangibles of academic

achievement. I try to adapt my method of

teaching to meet the diverse needs of my

students. I am thrilled to be a part of the Rainbow

International teaching team! Our ESL

program aims to provide our students with

the skills necessary to be confident English

learners, able to communicate with their

peers and teachers, participate in classroom

activities and achieve learning outcomes.

Ultimately, our goal is to develop the

capabilities, language learning strategies

and cognitive skills required for success in

the mainstream RIS classroom.

Meagan Davis is the 4-8 ESL teacher at

Rainbow International School. She has a

BA in English & Creative Writing and an

MA in English from the University of

South Alabama (USA). After graduation she

was a full-time instructor at USA, where

she taught English Composition and

Rhetoric, guest-lectured courses in poetry,

gender studies, and persuasive writing, and

served as the Assistant Coordinator for the

university’s Writing Outreach program.

Before coming to RIS, Ms. Davis taught 7th

grade Social Studies and Language Arts at

La Escuela Internacional Sampedrana in

San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where she also

served as their middle school newspaper

and national spelling bee advisor.

Ms. Davis strives to build a love for the

written word into all of her curriculum and

wants to encourage her students to not

only be competent in the many languages

they master but also to be inspired by

them. This year the ESL goals will be to

further the students’ grasp of English

grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension

in listening, speaking, reading, and writing

through a sheltered instruction program

tailored specifically to each student’s needs.

Creative writing will become a part of the

daily ESL life, and programs like the 4-8

Classroom Reading Initiative will stress

reading outside of school to foster the

students’ own sense of wonder and interest

in literature.

Hello Everyone ,

My name is Mrs Rashmi Gupta . I am from

India. I earned my Bachelors Degree from

Delhi University in 1984 .I also earned

teaching certificate form Delhi University in

1985. I came to South Korea in 1997 along with

my husband who works as IT CHIEF at IVI,

SEOUL. I went back to college in 2002 to earn

MASTER DEGREE in Curriculum and

Instruction from Michigan State University,

MI, USA.

My teaching career began in India in 1985

when I started teaching grade 4 and 5 science.

Within one year I was given the responsibility

of teaching Middle school in the same school

along with organizing school’s annual

function. Year 1990 was a special year of my

life when I got married and moved to Delhi.

After taking a year off, I began teaching again.

During these years I moved from primary

school to high school teaching physics and

chemistry with an additional responsibility of

setting science laboratories in newly set up

school. I have always enjoyed teaching science

as much as my students loved learning science.

I moved to South Korea in 1997 when I again

took a break from my teaching job to bring up

my second daughter. Teacher in me could not

be satisfied by sitting at home and I started

with subbing at SAIS, Yangjae, in year 2000.

Within a year at SAIS, I was given MS ESL

classes. I also taught Science to Middle School

for almost a year at the same school. I joined

Seoul foreign School and Seoul International

School, Seoul in year 2002 as substitute teacher

for Middle and elementary school. I also

worked as substitute for international

kindergarten (ECLC), hannamdong.

I was hired to co-teach grade 4 at SFS , Seoul

for one year and then again I was hired to

teach HS General Chemistry/ Environmental

Science . Year 2010 I was hired by RIS to

teach middle school science. I am currently

working at RIS.

My plans for this year are not sticking to

academics only but also develop creative

skills and interest. I believe that if I can

develop a love for learning, then I have

created lifelong learners. My content

teaching will be supplemented by acquiring

various necessary to function in today’s

society. These skills will unfold themselves

throughout the year .I am using –

INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND

TECHNOLOGY by HOLT as text books. I

also plan to begin science news club as part

of making my students aware of happening

in the world .As parents you can be a part of

your child’s education by visiting recently

implemented software –EDU20. Also as a

part of technology upgrading the school has

launched E-books which will help students

and teachers greatly. The SIS system will

keep parents updated on grades earned by

their kids at any point.

I believe teacher not only has the

responsibility of imparting knowledge to the

students, but also has a hand in developing

and molding their attitude and personality

but this task can’t be achieved by me alone.

We teachers at school and parents at home

can collaborate to achieve this target for

which we need to communicate. I can be

reached at [email protected] .I will try

my best to respond ASAP. I look forward to

your continued support and understanding.

Hello, my name is Ms. Nuri. I will be teaching grade four and five ESL this year! I am very

excited about the work we will be doing this year. Our ESL program will focus on

improving students’ language skills including speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension

in a fun way. Furthermore, students will be expected to come home with their homework

folder each night. I am sure it is going to be a fantastic and productive school year!

MS Science Grade 6 Teacher Dear Parents,

My name is Mr.Harun Güneş; I was born in

Turkey, in 1982. I graduated from Bosporus

University in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009, the

faculty of education, Science teaching

department. I worked in Tashkent Ulugbek

International School, in Uzbekistan, in

2009-2011 one and a half year as a science

teacher. Then I worked in Istanbul Merter

Fatih College in Turkey last 6 months again

as a science teacher.

This year I will teach science in RIS.

Hopefully we will enjoy altogether with

my students and parents.RIS is really a big

opportunity for all of us because we have a

very useful supportive facilities. I need to

say that in today’s world, we can teach our

children only if we can take their attention

and concentration to the class regardless of

the changing world conditions. If we want

to be a successful individual in this global

world, then, we have to keep up with the

technological innovations especially in

education. So in that point it is a fact that

RIS has an adequate system and I believe if

we follow the rules and procedures related

with our curriculum and lessons, we will

feel the difference in our children`s

cognitive and mental development.

At that point we have an important mission

altogether for our children’s future life and

future education. For an efficient learning

we need active and motivated learners .So

at school we try to motivate and give an

essential knowledge about science but it is

a fact that science is enjoyable but

challenging for many students.

RIS has an adequate academic level for the

students because we are following the

national standards, well prepared online

book …all of these resources will give us an

effective science teaching only if we can

take in to account some procedures and

rules both at home and school.

During this year of course I will have some

expectations related with our lessons,

homework, projects...And so on…You will

be informed about these issues daily.

One of the most important aspects of RIS is

the system ,we use SIS , LMS …

systems…with the help of these network

system we will communicate and discuss

easily for all things related with your

child`s education and progress.

Again welcome to our science class,

hopefully we will enjoy altogether in this

year.

teaching is very simple and can be

summarized in one word: Love. Love is the

only thing I require students to bring to our

classroom. I believe that students can truly

enjoy studying and great things will follow

naturally when teachers and students have

love for each other, love for teaching or

* Goal of Visual Art class

Our intention in R.I.S art classes is to

develop a visually literate and well-

informed young person, who better

understands what is involved in the making

of art. Our primary goal is to create an

atmosphere in which each of our students

feels encouraged and supported in his or

her creative endeavors. We truly believe

that each child is a great artist.

Art lessons are important in both theory

and practice, and all students are exposed

to a wide variety of two and three-

dimensional art forms, such as drawing,

painting, printmaking, sculpture,

bookmaking, fabric art, mixed-media,

graphic design, and ceramics. Basic art concepts and skills are taught and practiced each year as students move through the art program. Formal instruction is given when a new concept or technique is introduced, yet students are also encouraged to explore and experiment with materials and individual ideas. Throughout all the grades, R.I.S students are introduced to the artwork of various world cultures, past and present (as R.I.S is a great environment to learn about other cultures so far). We work collaboratively with other disciplines to make curricular connections and to broaden student understanding of given

topics.teaching. I strive to be

compassionate and realize that my

students’ success is not limited to the

tangibles of academic achievement. I try to

adapt my method of teaching to meet the

diverse needs of my students. I am thrilled to be a part of the Rainbow

International teaching team! Our ESL

program aims to provide our students with
