Professor Jan Cilliers is Professor of Mineral Processing and Head of Department of Earth Science and Engineering in the Royal School of Mines at Imperial College London.

Professor Cilliers leads the Rio Tinto Centre for Advanced Mineral Recovery, which was established at Imperial College in 2008 to develop new technologies in block caving, leaching and flotation.

After studying Minerals Engineering, and working both underground and above on the South African gold and platinum mines, Professor Cilliers l did his PhD in Cape Town. He moved to the UK in 1993, where he established his flotation research team, uniquely specialising in the role of the froth in separating minerals. His research develops complex physical models and measurement techniques to improve mineral separations.

Professor Cilliers serves on the International Mineral Processing Council, and leads the Commission on Education.

In 2010, Professor Cilliers was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Rio Tinto - UWA Masterclass Semester 1 2015

“Choosing the right route to produce copper.”

Professor Jan Cilliers, Imperial College London

Date: 13 May 2013

Time: 9.00am – 5.00pmVenue: University Club Seminar Room 1

Students accepted into the 2015 program will attend a brief pre-meeting for this Masterclass on Thursday 30 April at 10.00 (First Floor, Soil Science Building, Resource Room).

Copper is an important industrial metal, produced by mining and processing ores containing copper minerals and extracting the metal. Copper can be recovered in two ways; pyro- or hydro-metallurgically. This masterclass will explore a number of issues in choosing the most appropriate route, focussing on estimating the energy cost for each of the two production pathways. There will also be debates on environmental, commercial, political and social impacts.

Masterclass participants will act as teams of consultants to present a recommendation at the end of the day of which processing route is preferable for a new mine that is being planned. The class will include introductory lectures on copper mining and extraction technology for those unfamiliar with the field.

Pre-session reading (required): Introductions to copper production:- • EPA report on copper (to be distributed) • http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/136794/copper-processing• http://www.copper.org/publications/newsletters/innovations/2001/08/intro_mae.html• http://www.copper.org/publications/newsletters/innovations/2001/08/hydrometallurgy.html

Paul Bons is Professor of Structural Geology at the Department of Geosciences of the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen in Germany. He studied Geology and gained his PhD in Utrecht, The Netherlands, after which he held an ARC Postdoctoral fellowship and a Logan Research Fellowship at Monash University, Melbourne.

Professor Pons’ research covers a range of topics, from microstructural analyses and modelling, veins, hydrothermal fluid flow, magma transport, layered intrusions, folding, boudinage, plate tectonics, regional studies in South Australia, Central Tibet and the Spanish Pyrenees, to heat and solute dispersion in groundwater.

Numerical modelling has been an important research tool all through Professor Pons’ career and he is one of the co-founders of the ELLE numerical modelling project. In recent years he has started to apply his expertise on rock deformation and modelling to ice to.

To bridge the gap between geology and glaciology, Professor Pons initiated and chaired the European Science Foundation Research Network Programme “Micro-Dynamics of Ice”. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and edited the book “Microdynamic simulation”.

“Ice: is it special, or just another rock?”

Professor Paul Pons, Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany

Date: 18 August 2015

Time: 9.00am – 5.00pmVenue: University Club Seminar Room 1

Students accepted into the 2015 program will attend a brief pre-meeting for this Masterclass on Tuesday 28 July at 10.00 (First Floor, Soil Science Building, Resource Room).

The behaviour of ice caps and glaciers is one of the biggest unknowns in predicting sea level rise in a changing climate. Ice caps allow us to probe deep into the Earth’s climate history as ancient layers are buried deep below the surface. However, the ongoing flow of ice may disrupt or modify climate signals. All this depends on the mechanical properties of ice. Ice 1h is the mineral that forms the rock masses that we call glaciers or ice caps. As any mineral, it has its own properties, but also many similarities with other rock-forming minerals, like quartz, mica or olivine.

This masterclass will discuss the similarities and differences between ice and other minerals, and between ice flow and flow of rocks in shear zones and mountain belts. We will look at how knowledge of natural ice is acquired (drill core, radargrams) and how this is used in numerical models.
