We’re living in times that are so saturated with alarming news that it’s difficult to sort through what’s most important.

Can anyone blame someone who asks what the arts can possibly do to solve the community’s problems? Or someone who professes to enjoy the arts but who views them as an enhancement that we’ll get to after the real issues are addressed?

If the arts and acts of creativity are going to claim their rightful place in front of the public, we need to bring

a confident, self-aware voice to the conversation—one that values complexity, nuance, beauty,

ambiguity, and the deep dive of the imagination.

The arts are not an enhancement or a pleasant escape from reality. They teach us tools of

discovery and invention. They allow us to own the fullness of our humanity. They create a dialogue

between individual minds that transcends time and place. They cultivate empathy and push the edge of our personal experience. They create a legacy for a culture that lasts for the ages.

In 2020 Rimon will celebrate its 25th year of bringing arts into the center of the community. What a record of accomplishment! By the end of the year Rimon will have distributed more than $200,000 in Project Support grants to over 100

Recycling as an artistic practice is the subject of the 2

nd Salon on February 16

at the Textile Center of Minnesota. Rimon presents three fiber artists—Sonya Berlovitz, Beth Barron, and Robyn Awend--who each use a distinctive approach to re-purposing textiles in work ranging from costume design and band-aid mandalas to papermaking. Inspired by the Talmudic teaching bal tashchit (do not waste),

Young Artist Mentorship Program Soars Rimon’s commitment to teen arts education grows deeper each year. Following a

successful launch last summer of the Young Artist Mentorship program, Rimon

has doubled the number of students selected to participate.

Visual artists Jonah Schmieg and Isa Kaner-Roth, photographers Dvorah Leah

Kvasnik and Ruby Stillman, and writers Max Walker and Nora Cornell are

working one-on-one this summer with

local artist-educators Avigail

Manneberg, Linda Brooks, and

Alison Morse.

Avigail Manneberg, a graduate of

Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Art and

Design, is an accomplished artist and

teacher whose own work includes

painting, drawing, video, sound, and

fabric. Linda Brooks has exhibited

her photographs internationally and

taught at St. Paul Academy and

Summit School for 27 years. Alison

Morse’s award-winning fiction, poetry,

and narrative non-fiction have appeared in numerous national literary journals,

magazines, and anthologies.

Everyone is welcome to attend an informal dialogue and exhibit of the

students’ work on September 22 (2 pm) at the Sabes JCC. Many thanks to Kris

and John MacDonald who have funded this exciting program.

If you attended Rimon’s 8th annual P’Chotchka in early June,

you know it was amazing. A fast-paced evening of art, food, and ideas, P’Chotchka featured eight superbly talented Minnesota Jewish artists. The challenge for the artists: each selected 18 images that have inspired them and then spoke for 18 seconds per image to get their point across.

This year’s group included a theater director, installation artist, vocalist/composer, photographer, mixed media artist, sculptor, writer, and papercutting artist. Rimon had supported all of them through one of its many programs.

The audience roared its approval: “Another fabulous evening showcasing local artists and all that Rimon does to help them...” “Absolutely over the top!” “The one Jewish event I never miss.”

“Oh, what a night!”

artists and organizations.

Audiences have benefited from programs that didn’t exist before Rimon set sail--Artist Salons, arts workshops for young and old, intensive mentorships for teens, travel-study grants for emerging artists, and our ever-popular monthly e-guide to the Jewish arts in Minnesota.

None of it is possible without you. Thank you! David Jordan Harris, Executive Director

the artists will collaborate on a new piece commissioned by Rimon.

Jewish composer Sergio Barer, born in Mexico City, will be in the Twin Cities in the coming season working on a series of choral pieces integrating his interviews with local Mexican families. The 3

rd Rimon Artist Salon, which takes

place on April 19 at St. Paul’s East Side Freedom Library, will focus on Barer’s artistic response to the immigration crisis and will pair him in dialogue with Ahmed Anzaldua, conductor of the chorus Border CrosSing.

The final Artist Salon on May 10 celebrates the 100

th anniversary of the

first performance of S. Ansky’s seminal play The Dybbuk. The play has inspired an astounding range of artistic responses. Rimon will build on this history by commissioning two Twin Cities Jewish artists—composer Eddie Estrin and playwright Jenna Zark--to create short works responding to one aspect of The Dybbuk at the HUGE Improv Theater.

PLEASE SUPPORT RIMON WITH A GENEROUS DONATION!

Rimon brings art to all age-groups—like this summer’s Young Artist Mentorships in writing, photography, and drawing for teens. Next stop—writing workshops at Sholom’s Knollwood Place in the fall! Rimon has awarded 96 Project Support grants since 2005, thanks to generous gifts from hundreds of donors to the Rimon Arts Fund. The next application deadline is September 20. “Rimon is a model for how to deepen the experience of Jews looking for meaning in today’s Jewish landscape and how to use the arts to engage Jews on the periphery of Jewish life…” Rabbi Sid Schwarz, author of Jewish Megatrends: Charting the Course of the Jewish American Future
