editorial

this weekend’s round four matches complete a four-week trial where taC Cup clubs have been able to call on six interchange players.

While increased interchange benches have received plenty of airtime in the AFL, the TAC Cup trialled an expanded interchange bench purely because of concerns about its players’ welfare. The clubs’ region managers were worried poor ground conditions during the pre-season had interrupted their preparations to the extent many players were under-prepared for the 2008 season.

But the trial also gave more players at each TAC Cup club the chance of playing at this level – an obvious positive.

Now the trial has finished, AFL Victoria will seek feedback from the competition’s coaches and region managers.

It will be interesting to see how the balance of providing players with adequate game time worked in tandem with adequately addressing their welfare.

When all the feedback has been gathered AFL Victoria will make a reasoned decision on whether to introduce a six-player interchange bench in the future.

AFL Victoria will be mindful the TAC Cup is a development program and not a competition where clubs rise or fall by wins and losses. This is where the debates at AFL and TAC Cup level may diverge.

This issue of the TAC Cup Record contains an insight into the life-changing experiences of the AIS-AFL Academy scholarship holders on their recent tour of South Africa.

Northern Knight Michael Hurley provides an enlightening

account of a world he had never experienced and the joy of locals who embraced the clinics and matches put on by the Academy.

The South African tour is another step in the education of these players and will, as Michael Hurley notes, have a lasting impact.

The AIS-AFL Academy is the top level of the AFL’s national talent development program.

Below it is the Academy level, a state-based program for players who have the potential to participate in the state National Championship squads.

Then there are the Centres Of Excellence – the TAC Cup clubs who provide players with the opportunity to develop their games and emerge as better players.

It is a clearly defined, sequential program for all aspiring junior footballers from the time they enter the talent pathway.

Finally, congratulations to former Gippsland Power player Ben Ross and former Eastern Ranges player Matthew Spangher, who made their AFL debuts last weekend.

Dealing with disappointment is part and parcel of football.

Murray Bushrangers’ defender Riley Milne has learned that the hard way – several times over.

First, a couple of years ago he was overlooked for the Bushrangers’ under-16 squad. He rebounded from that hiccup to make the Bushrangers’ list last season, breaking into their 22 mid-way through the season – about the time that Murray went on its 12-match winning streak.

But Milne badly rolled his ankle on the Wednesday before the Grand Final against Calder.

Unable to recover in time, he was a dejected spectator as the injury-depleted Bushrangers – also without centre half-back James Saker – went down by 50 points.

The disappointment of missing the Grand Final and the Bushrangers’ defeat lingered during the off-season, but the Year 12 Mooroopna Secondary College student has rebounded in 2008.

Elevated from a back pocket to centre half-back, Milne has been a key Bushrangers player this

season, starring in their 22-point, round two win against the Gippsland Power and receiving the maximum five TAC Cup Coaches Award votes.

Bushrangers’ coach Phil Bunn said Milne, had adjusted well to his new key defensive role.

“He’s been very disciplined at centre half-back,” Bunn said. “He’s contested every issue and with every team, of course, looking to direct the ball through its centre half-forward, Riley has been there to compete very well.”

“He really spoiled well against Gippsland and he has the speed and agility to recover ground balls and also provided us with a nice springboard into attack.”

Milne, a member of the initial Vic Country squad for the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, capped off his game by drifting downfield to kick a goal.

Bunn said Milne had improved considerably in the past two years. “Riley is not a crash and bash, big, strong, burly, knock-down centre half back,” he said. “He’s a skilled, agile player who continues to grow in confidence.”

Milne said he was keen to start “afresh” in 2008 after last season’s shattering finish and, as such, had embarked on an intensive pre-season.

While happy enough with both the Bushrangers’ and his own start to the season, Milne noted there was still room for improvement.

“We’re not taking anything for granted,” he said. “We’re working on things so that we can continue to improve.”

For michael hurley, the aiS-aFl academy has been a rewarding and life-changing experience.

It has provided non-stop highlights with none better than its recent tour of South Africa.

Hurley, an All-Australian from the Northern Knights, says the Academy’s visit to South Africa opened his eyes in so many ways.

While some of the sights, particularly at the AIDS orphanages, were shocking, Hurley is glad he saw them.

“It really opens your eyes and you see just how lucky we are to live the way we do,” Hurley says.

“The AIDS orphanage was a real life-changing experience. At first it was a bit hard to come to terms with, but once you got past their conditions it was a really worthwhile experience.”

During its tour, the Academy visited Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria, running clinics that drew hundreds of locals.

Few, if any, had boots and many of the children were barefoot, but it didn’t diminish their excitement for learning Australian Football.

Hurley still marvels at the spirit of the local children.

“All the kids have a smile on their face, they are always upbeat,” he says. “You rarely saw anyone upset.”

“They are always smiling and dancing around and stuff.

The kids looked pretty good, they are very athletic.

“They are pretty fast, have a great vertical leap. You could tell they really loved interacting with us and enjoyed the football.

“I reckon some would get the hang of it pretty quick.”

Some locals also showed good form on the field, with several playing in an Academy intra-squad match, while the national South African team, which included players aged between 17-30, took on the Academy.

But, for once, the outcome of the matches was immaterial.

“It was just a great experience,” Hurley says.

On the way to and from South Africa, the Academy also played two matches, one against East Perth and the other against West Perth. Despite the fact both WA teams had a mix of senior, reserves and colts players, the Academy won both matches.

It was just another chapter in Hurley’s remarkable eight months with the Academy.

“It’s been unbelievable,” he says. “They treat you with such respect in everything that’s done.”

“The professionalism, facilities and coaching has been first class.”

Last week, Hurley played his first game this season for the Knights, all the better for his experiences with the Academy.

ashley smith’s introduction to the taC Cup was a rocky one.

Although he had been earmarked as a genuine talent since his early junior days, Smith admitted he took some things for granted.

Like the fitness required to make the jump from under-age suburban and school competitions to the TAC Cup, for example.

So when Smith embarked on his first pre-season with the Dandenong Stingrays in the summer of 2006-07 his fitness was poor.

Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats and region manager Darren Flanigan both noticed Smith was floundering. Smith was fully aware of it too.

“I was really slack last year and I got a kick in the backside half way through pre-season,” Smith recalled.

“It sure kicked me into gear a little bit.”

It certainly did.Fast-forward to the summer of

2007-08, and Smith was one of the fittest at the Stingrays.

Maintaining his fitness base from the 2007 season, Smith dived headlong into pre-season training last November.

“Last year I was really unfit at the start of pre-season,” Smith said. “This year, I’m happy with my fitness, it was a focal point.”

Not only did Smith drop a couple of kilograms, but his skin fold tests also fell from 70 in 2007 to 55 this year.

Yeats noted Smith’s newfound commitment to his fitness, which has helped him become a pivotal player for the Stingrays this year.

Most notably, Smith collected the maximum votes in the TAC Cup Coaches Award in the Stingrays’ round-two win against the Geelong Falcons.

After spending all his time last season at half-back, Smith was thrown into the middle against the Falcons and responded with 28 possessions. And it was his ability to run the game out that proved telling.

“Ash had a break-out game,” Yeats said.

“He played the best game he’s played since he’s been in the program. He hasn’t been exposed to the TAC Cup as much as others because he’s a private school boy at Haileybury.

“He had a very ordinary pre-season last year.

“But against the Falcons he made a real statement. He was very clean with his possessions, he’s a very good kick, he reads the play well and he’s very balanced.”

Given his school commitments, Smith is unlikely to spend much time with the Stingrays until the second half of the season.

Experiencing the swing between school football and TAC Cup football in 2007, Smith knows what’s required of him when he returns.

He has last summer’s reality check to thank for that.

33TAC CUP RECORD

editorial

this weekend’s round four matches complete a four-week trial where taC Cup clubs have been able to call on six interchange players.

Bushranger Riley Milne has made centre half-back his own in 2008.

michael hurley

Last week, Hurley played his first game this season for the Knights, all the better for his experiences with the Academy.

ashley smith

ashley smith’s introduction to the taC Cup was a rocky one.
