CASE STUDY
Service: Rightsteps Wellbeing
My name is: Jane
I feel: As an office administrator who recently had to change my work role, the new work environment is stressful. Additionally my relationship with a senior team member is also strained as I feel that I am ‘talked down to’.
My thoughts:
I experienced severe domestic violence in a previous marriage, and my current marriage isn’t strong. I want to spend more time with my grown up children and grandchildren who lived in the next village.
My symptoms:
Low mood and low self esteem.
How I was
feeling:
These issues are impacting on my ability to concentrate and deliver in work.
Produced with the service user’s kind permission. All names have been changed. Rightsteps Wellbeing® 2013
What I didI spoke with my employer and was offered the support of the Rightsteps Wellbeing service.
What I was asked to doI completed 5 of the programmes 6 weekly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sessions over the telephone along with self help based work that was supplied.
My therapist also gave me homework which involved revisiting worksheets in between sessions such as the therapists own mood checker worksheet which monitored my daily mood and included assertiveness and confidence building exercises.
What I am doing nowI made a major decision at the end of the programme to apply for a promotion in the organisation. My application was successful and I was able to negotiate a part time contract meaning that I can spend more time with my family.
What I gained from my treatmentDuring sessions I developed a sense of ‘self’ as I felt I was ‘being listened to and feeling acknowledged’ this helped me make decisions to achieve my goals that I set at the start of the programme. These were achieved by discussing confidence and assertiveness techniques in sessions with my therapist and by completing a number of assertiveness worksheets.
How I feel nowMy progress has been steady, my PHQ9 score has improved from an initial score indicating moderate depression to a score indicating mild depression, and my GAD7 score reduced from moderate anxiety to mild anxiety. My employer has been so confident in my progress that I was promoted to a more senior role as a direct result.
