Important information:
Tanzania is a land without winter. Temperatures in northern Tanzania range between 15-21C during the
day and 4-10C at night, from May to October. From November to March the daytime temperature varies
from 21-32C and from 15-23C at night. However, if you are travelling to high altitude areas like Ngorongoro
Crater and Kilimanjaro, of course the temperature drops substantially.
PASSPORT & VISAS
All visitors to Tanzania must have a passport valid for travel to Tanzania. Except for exempted countries all visitors require a visa to enter Tanzania. South Africans visiting on holiday currently do not require a visa (from 2014). Visas are currently US$ 50 per person, single entry for most other nationalities.

HEALTH
2017 – Currently the situation is that officially, yellow fever vaccines are no longer required to enter Tanzania
unless you have been via an endemic area. However, on the ground, it often differs and you are likely to be
ASKED FOR YELLOW FEVER certificate, even if you have only been in transit via Nairobi.

INSECTS
Mosquitoes are generally more prolific in towns and at the coast, so please take malaria prophylactics. On safari, there are areas where you may encounter tsetse flies. Tsetse flies are mainly found in the woodlands, and their bite does hurt. There is no insect repellent that is 100% effective against the tsetse fly. The best protection is to wear long sleeves & long pants, and when you are driving through a tsetse fly infested area roll up your windows. Note that dark blue and black colours attract tsetse flies and it is recommended not to wear these colours when game driving in tsetse areas. Tsetse flies require the thick bush and woodlands to breed and survive. The open plains of the Southern and Eastern Serengeti as well as the Ngorongoro Crater and the southern parts of the Central Serengeti are generally tsetse free. The highest concentrations of tsetse flies are found in Tarangire National Park and the Western Serengeti, and are most noticeable after rains.
CURRENCY
There is no restriction on the importation of foreign currency. The import or the export of Tanzanian shillings
is prohibited. The current rate of exchange is around TSh 2200 to US$1 (Dec 2016). Visitors can change their
foreign currency at any of the Bureaux de Change, which often give a better rate than the banks, and hotels.
USD cash notes are also widely accepted.
(Please note that US$ notes SHOULD BE post 2012, banks no longer accept USD notes pre-2006). We recommend a combination of cash and a bank card for emergencies. Cash should be a mix of large and small denomination notes - otherwise you will end up carrying large amounts of Shillings around! Any excess shillings can be changed back to US$ at your hotel/Bureau de Change etc, - you get the slightly lower rate for small denomination notes.
CREDIT CARDS
Some of the major lodges and hotels do accept credit cards on mainland Tanzania & Zanzibar - we do suggest
you take sufficient cash and use a credit card as a backup only. In some cases a surcharge will be added to
credit card payments – up to 5% could be levied.
In some of the bigger towns, eg Arusha, Moshi and Dar-es-Salaam, it is possible to use a bank debit/visa card
– subject to the bank being on line! We don’t recommend you rely on this, but could be used for emergencies
(as with a credit card).
