RIDE OPERATIONS TRAINING The team members who work as ride operators at Kentucky Kingdom undergo rigorous training. Before they are trained on specific rides, operators must complete the Certified Ride Operator (CRO) course and pass a CRO exam. The course includes classroom instruction and interactive and scenario-based training that focuses on seven major areas: Professionalism and communication; Working with riders; Ride anatomy; Operator positions; Documentation; Ride accessibility; and Preparation and response. In 2016, 225 team members will complete the CRO course and pass the accompanying exam. Each member of the ride operations team will receive one-on-one training on an average of four different attractions, but must first pass another exam concerning the specific rides for which they will be trained. Kentucky Kingdom uses testing software (Atrixware) to administer the ride operator exams. This program allows the park’s ride management personnel to evaluate how well and easily team members are comprehending the material and then to adjust their training methods if necessary. All training is conducted by members of Kentucky Kingdom’s staff who have completed a “Train the Trainer” course and been certified after a one-on-one review of their videotaped training session with a member of the park’s ride operations management team. Of course, all trainers must also complete the CRO course and pass the accompanying exam. The Ride Operations Department has 14 certified trainers for the 2016 season, 85% of whom are returning for their third season. All members of Kentucky Kingdom’s ride management staff have received Level 1 certification from AIMS International (Amusement Industry Manufacturers & Suppliers). This is the only internationally recognized program for certification of knowledge and experience in the field of amusement ride operations.
