/'. THE 445TH BOMBARDMENT GROUP (H)

Formed by way of GENERALORDERSNo. 46 datedApril 1, 1943, issued by HEADQUARTERSSECONDAIR FORCE

Fort George Wright, Washington. It will consist of:445th Headquarters Unit

700th Bombardment Squadron (H)701st Bombardment Squadron (H)702nd Bombardment Squadron (H)703rd Bombardment Squadron (H)

The various components of the group were formed up at WendoverField located at the western edge of Utah, very near its border withNevada.

0v; During the first 10 days of July 1943 the Group was transferred toSioux City, Iowa for crew training and to receive the equipment, including aircraft, considered necessary for going to war.

On 6 Oct 1943 AIR BASEHEADQUARTERS,Sioux City, Iowa issuedSpecial Orders #279 defining 62 crews (Ten men each) with fourpassengers each aircraft (Headquarters and other staff personnel)relinquishing control and moving the group to 21 Bomb Wing, Lincoln,Nebraska.

r----..

Fourteen crews were defined as 700th Bomb SQ, 16 to the 701st, 15to the 702nd, and 16 to the 703rd. Prior to departure an additionaleight combat crews were authorized, raising the group's combinedstrength to 381 officers and 1639 enlisted men. Those personnel notlisted as aircrew or passengers were transported via the Queen Maryfrom New York to England and their ultimate station at Eighth AirForce Army Air Field #124, APO #634, TIBENHAM.

HOW TO READ THE ENCLOSED DOCUMENTS

o COVER-

Self explained except for aircraft silhouette,

Each group within the Second Air Division could be identified bythe color of it fin/rudder and the direction and color of the stripe there on.

Two Large Letters on side of fuslaqe and just forward of the tail assemblydefined the Squadron:

There were four squadrons in the 445th Bomb Group

70ath IS701st MK702nd V'l/V703rd RN

The black letter appearing on the rudder and fuselage is that AlC's radio call sign.

• COMBAT MISSION HISTORY -

The individual's combat record is defined by the missions on which he flew The crewsmanifest for which he is a part defines the other crewmernbers participating; their position onthe crew, and their rank. The crewmember for which this document has been prepared is hi-lighted in bold type.

As indicated earlier, the 445th Bomb Group was credited with flying 280 combat missionswhile a part of the Eighth Air Force. On the line above the crewman's mission numberis the group mission number, The date on which the mission was flown is indicated next andfinally on the same line; is the last three digits of the AlC serial number (Commonly called the"tail number'). The last letter, shown as part of the tail number is the radio call sign. Thisletter is assigned to the AlC when it is first assigned to the squadron and stays with theairplane throughout its' life,

• GROUP COMBAT MISSS!ON HISTORY -

Lists the target assignment of the group on the day the individual participated. Each elementof the mission is self-defined by column title.

NOTES OF INTEREST

A few items of interest that I have been questions about:

When the 445th Bomb Group was made operational as part of the SecondCombat Wing, Second Division, Eighth Air force; a combat tour was definedas being 25 combat missions. An Air Medal was presented to each aircrewmember for each five missions completed. On completion of a tour, theairman received the Distinguished Flying Gross instead of another Air Medal.Each of these awards was specified in writ~ng, on General Orders, issued bySecond Division Headquarters;

On April 23rd 1944, a tour was re-defined as being 30 combat missions andthe required missions for receiving the Air Medal was increased to six. TheDistinguished Flying Cross was given at 30 missions instead of the Air Medal.

By the end of May 1944, a Combat Tour was again redefined as being 35missions.

A lead crew (Three per Squadron) new each day whether on a mission or notand accumulated many additional flying hours in so doing. It also could taketwice as long (in calendar days) to complete a tour. For the lead crewairman, his tour was complete after 30 missions.

Definition of a Combat Mission:

We have found that while the Group was credited with a combat mission, once the Take Off has occurred. If Division HQ later issued a "Recall Order",the mission did not count.

If a mission was aborted by order of the Air Commander, the mission may, ormay not, be counted. And this could be true even within a Group.

On one or two occasions we have had to make a "judgment decision" basedon other documents. One thing was certain; no air crewman flew beyond hispre-defined combat tour.
