Novel Set in Porto, with Author’s Signed and Dated Inscription To an Author from Porto

1. ALBUQUERQUE [do Alardo de Amaral Cardoso e Barba de Men-eses e Lencastre], António de. O solar das Fontainhas: scenas do Porto, romance. porto: typographia “artes e Letras”, 1910. 8°, original beige printed wrappers (some minor soiling and foxing; slight defects to spine), white-on-blue printed sticker on front cover of “Depositarios Cernadas & C.a, Livraria editor, rua aurea, 190-192 Lisboa”. Floral vignette on title page. In good to very good condition. author’s signed and dated four-line presentation inscription on half title: “ao meu querido amigo e distincto // escriptor severo portella offr. // antonio d’albuquerque // Lisboa 12 Dezembro 910”. (1 l.), 289 pp. $400.00

FIrst and onLy eDItIon of this novel set in porto. the Dicionário cronológico devotes considerable space to this work, in which the author returns to “narrativa de costumes epigonal; mas transfere para a atmosfera portuense abundantes tiques da intriga de O Marquês da Bacalhoa, em torno do conluio do alto clero e nobreza locais para o esbulho de uma fortuna familiar em favor da propaganda ultramontana.”

the works of antonio albuquerque (alardo de amaral Cardoso e barba de meneses e Lencastre, Viseu, 1866-Sintra, 1923) show the influence of both naturalismo and deca-dentismo, and blur the line between fiction and history. O Marquês de Bacalhoa, 1908, was a thinly veiled roman à clef whose characters included D. Carlos I (who was assassinated in 1908), his wife D. amélia, and João Franco.

Provenance: severo portela (porto, 1875-1945), author of more than a dozen books and teacher, a republican from school days, was a career employee at the ministry of Finances fired for political reasons. See Grande encyclopedia, XXII, 580.

Early Anthropological / Autobiographical Work

*4. ARCHER, Maria. África selvagem: folclore dos negros do grupo “Bantu”. Lisbon: Livraria editora Guimarães & C.ª, [1935]. 8°, original printed wrappers (some soiling and minor foxing). Very light browning. In very good condition. author’s signed and dated (“23/11/35”) six-line presentation inscription to acúrsio pereira on half title. 253 pp., (1 l.). $150.00

FIrst (and only?) eDItIon of this anthropological work with autobiographical overtones, one of the author’s earliest books. While various dates of publication are given, our guess is that all refer to the same edition. maria archer spent her childhood and young adult years in moçambique (1910-1913 and 1921-1926), Guiné (1916-1918), and angola (1930-1934). Her writing is marked by the courage with which she depicts women at a time when to do so was not politically correct. She was a fierce opponent of the salazar regime, spending 1954-1974 in forced exile in brazil, returning to portugal in 1977 to die five years later, ignored and in misery.

Provenance: acúrcio pereira (1891-1977) was considered the dean of portuguese journalists; he wrote for practically every daily newspaper published in Lisbon and porto during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, as well as for literary reviews and magazines. In 1911 he joined the Diário de notícias, then headed by alfredo da Cunha, rising rapidly from reporter to important editorial positions, serving 27 years as editor-in-chief. In addition to several books on diverse subjects, he collaborated on a number of theatrical pieces. see Grande enciclopédia XXI, 110; Actualização IX, 187; and Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, III, 431.

FIrst and onLy eDItIon [?]. arguments by one of the defense lawyers in the affair of artur Virgilio alves reis, perpetrator of one of the most sensational crimes in all history. alves reis did not produce counterfeit bank notes; rather, he forged docu-ments purportedly from the bank of portugal authorizing him during 1925 to have 300 million escudos (then equal to over $15,000,000) worth of 500$00 escudo notes (the largest then in circulation) printed by the firm in London, Waterlow and Sons, which produced portugal’s paper currency, and to take delivery of same. the documents also called for secrecy. The funds were used to finance Alves Reis’ failing Banco de Angola e Metró-pole. no one could fault these notes, as they were printed from the same plates and on the same paper as were used for the Bank of Portugal orders. scheme to be discovered, alves reis was attempting to purchase the bank of portugal; had he succeeded, the crime might never have come to light.

reis’s fraud had enormous repercussions on the economy and politics of portugal. by the end of 1925 reis had managed to introduce into the portuguese economy escudo bank notes worth £1,007,963 at 1925 exchange rates, a figure which in perspective is equivalent to 0.88% of portugal’s nominal GDp at the time. the portuguese currency was severely compromised and existing 500$00 escudo bank notes had to be withdrawn.

When reis’s fraud became public knowledge in December 1925 it brought about a crisis of confidence in the Portuguese government. This crisis had a strong effect on the 28 may 1926 nationalist military coup against the Primeira República government of president bernardino machado which brought the República Autoritária to power, herald-ing the dictatorship of prime minister antónio de oliveira salazar from 1932 to 1968. (Salazar was briefly Finance Minister in 1926, but resigned; in 1928 he accepted the post again, but on condition that he be given a free hand. Given the full financial control that he demanded by General António de Fragoso Carmona, he put Portuguese finances on a stable footing for the first time in the twentieth century.)

the bank of portugal sued Waterlow & sons in the High Court in London. In one of the most complex trials in English legal history, the case was finally settled in the House of Lords on 28 april 1932 in favour of the banco de portugal, which was awarded £610,392 in damages. Waterlow & sons’ business never completely recovered; it was finally acquired by another firm in 1961.

was one of the most important portuguese authors of the romantic school. He published his first volume of poetry at age 17, astounding the literati by his individuality of style and unaffected simplicity of form. He was a friend and protégé of the historian, poet and historical novelist alexandre Herculano, and also a friend of almeida Garrett. Later he was friends with ramalho ortigão, Colombano bordalo pinheiro, and eça de Queiroz (whose caricature of bulhão pato in Os Maias, in the form of the poet tomás de alencar, provoked a violent polemic). His name has been given to a classic of portuguese cookery, Ameijoas ao Bulhão Pato (clams in a sauce of garlic, butter and parsley).

Author’s Signed Inscription to a Well-Known Novelist

Occasional very light spotting. In fine condition. author’s signed presentation four-line inscription to João José Grave on front flyleaf. 186 pp., (3 ll.). $150.00

Second edition; the first edition was published at Coimbra, also by Amado, in 1894; several Italian and spanish translations also appeared.

the poet, diplomat and university professor eugénio de Castro (eugénio de Castro e almeida, 1869-1944) introduced symbolism to portugal; as a young diplomat in paris he came into contact with the great French symbolist poets, becoming a friend of Jean moréas and Henri de Régnier. His influence can be seen even on such established Portuguese writers as Guerra Junqueiro, and he undoubtedly paved the way for Camilo pessanha and Mário Sá Carneiro. Castro’s verse (“often so perfect, always so artificial,” says Bell, Portuguese Literature p. 337) signaled the return to poetry of careful thought and planning, as opposed to the inspired improvisation of the romanticists, and led to the cult of “art for art’s sake” or “estheticism” that became prominent in portugal ca. 1925.

Provenance: João José Grave (Vagos, 1872-porto, 1934), novelist, poet, and journal-ist, was director of the biblioteca municipal do porto. He collaborated on Brasil-Portugal 1899-1914), Revista Nova (1901-1902), and Serões (1901-1911). His novels, published from 1903 to 1919, began in the naturalistic style of Zola, shifted to costume dramas, then to a vaguely Nietzschean paganism, and finally to neo-romantic and nationalist themes. His first works were published while he was a student, and he became involved in politics shortly thereafter, becoming an important figure in the Vida Nova movement, the Liga Liberal and the partido Franquista. Provenance: alberto de serpa esteves de oliveira (1906-1992), poet, dramatist, essayist and book collector, attended the University of Coimbra for 3 years but was more interested in collaborating with the writers of Presença than in studying. He published his first novel, Saudade do mar, at age 17, and 2 collections of poetry (Quadras and Evoé), but it was 2 later collections, Varanda, 1934 and Vinte poemas da noite, 1935, that led to his unanimous recognition by critics as an important modern poet. FIrst and onLy eDItIon of this discussion of an early arms-control pact. the pactos de mayo were signed in may 1902 in an attempt to resolve the disputes between Chile and argentina over the border of patagonia. the dispute had been going on since the early 1880s and led to an arms race by the 1890s.

this volume includes the text of two of the 1902 agreements: the tratado Jeneral de arbitraje, intended to provide a framework for resolving disputes, and the Convencion sobre Armamentos Navales, according to which Chile was assigned the Pacific as a sphere of influence, and Argentina the Atlantic. The two countries also agreed to significantly decrease their navies—making this one of the world’s first arms-control pacts.

the agreements were not joyously accepted by all. Included in the volume are notes exchanged between the ministers of Chile and argentina, parliamentary minutes of discussions on these agreements (June to August 1902), and a “Manifiesto al Pais” of August 1902 expressing dissent (pp. 31-47). The final and longest essay (pp. 49-82), “La paz Chileno-arjentina,” dated august 1902, is by Julio Zegers samaniego (santiago, 1830-1918). Zegers samaniego was director of the Imprensa nacional in 1856 and later vice-rector of the Instituto nacional. In 1876 he was elected deputy, and was Chile’s minister of Finance from august 1878 to april 1879, at the beginning of the War of the Pacific. He was one of the leaders of the movement that resulted in the Chilean Civil War of 1891. after 1894 he withdrew from politics and devoted himself to writing on politics, economics, and biography.
