INTRODUCTION

The challenge at hand was to To design an experimental sound object from found items and then create a score that would allow a user to recreate a spe-cific 30 second performance having never seen the object or the score previ-ously.

PROCESS–In depth user testing of instrument usability–Preparing the score for users from various user groups, in order to document and define needs and expectations of those multiple users

–Revamping of the score, to the utmost legibility of the user

the PERFORMANCES

performer #1a user testing with a performer unfamiliar with the assignmentasked to read the score, and play accordingly

How she did:

Performer #1 was very serious and focused on her performance. She worked very hard to understand what she was doing. She played correctly in regards to speed and sound, the only flaw was the she did not leave the bottle on the table.

Results:

After this performance additional instructions were stressed in the score to leave the bottle on the table

How she did:

Performer #2 was less serious in comparison. She did not follow the written instructions, and acted as if it was not necessary to do so.

Results:

Be prepared for users who have less patience and try to make the score as direct as possible with as little written instructions as possible.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The process of creating an instrument out of found household objects, and then composing a musical score that is readable and understandable to a user not familiar with this instrument was the task at hand. Over all the story of the rice and the round brush was a success. The process involved numerous revamps to the original score, but in summary of it all not too much was altered.

The user testing proved essential in the process of creating a score that would function appropriately for the sound. One must consider all facets of the mind from multiple experiences of performances. Although there were mistakes in the performances. The mistakes provided enabled for the altering and improvement of the first attempted score.

With the final score the instrument is able to be played perfectly as it was initially composed.
