8 Myanmar Update

Something to be proud of... Thanks to you and the lunchboxes, we have finished building the school in Myanmar (Sar chet) - The Project is run and con-trolled by The Danish refugee council. The school opened on June 1st 2011 – the first day of the new school year in Myanmar. enjoy the follow-ing pictures of the children and their lovely comments regarding their new school. 338 boys and 334 girls from Sar chet and 5 neighboring villages are now able to go to school again. For christmas 2010, a lot of rIce employees decided to donate their christmas Gift from the company to the school, and with this money, they bought tables, benches, blackboards and cupboards.

No one can help everyone but everyone can help someone...

Myanmar Update 9

Htet Htet Hlaing – 13 years old and in 7th grade on the Sar Chet School.Htet Htet Hlaing lives in Kaka Yo Village with her mother, father and 4 siblings.“I have just started on the new school. I live in Kaka Yo Village and go by boat to school every day – a half hour trip. Before Nargis, I attended a school in my own village, but that was destroyed by the cyclone. After starting on Sar chet School I enjoy school even more than before. I feel safe here, knowing that the school can withstand hard weather.I am so happy that I have been allowed to go here, but I really hope for a school in my own village so my brothers and sisters can go too. My dream is to become a doctor someday and I will do my best to make it happen.”

Saw Aw Lae Bal – 15 years old and in the 9th grade on the Sar Chet School. Saw Aw Lae Bal lives in Sar chet with his mother, father and 4 siblings.“I am so happy about my new school and very proud to be a student here. My 3 brothers and my sisters are here too.After starting in Sar chet School I have found a goal for my future. I dream of becoming Head Master of this school some-day. I would like to be able to continue with school and hope for a High School in the area. That is a really big wish for a lot of people.”

Naw Hti Saw Phaw – 21 years and in 8th grade on Sar Chet School. Naw Hti Saw Phaw lost her mother, father and all siblings except one, when Nargis hit the area.“I am proud to be a student at the new school here in Sar chet and I can relax when I am here knowing that the school is strong, clean, big, very nice and new. We do not have to be afraid of storm, rain or flooding.I hope we will one day have a High School in the area, because a lot of people – like me – really want to continue studying. right now the nearest High School is in Labutta Village – a 2 ½ hour trip by boat. That is very far away and it also costs money to attend, so no one from around here does…”

Funky Cooking...Sorry! My book "Funky Favourites" is still only in danish... But enjoy this recipe and have fun with friends and families around the table...

Funky Meatloaf

This dish is comfort food at it's best. Everybody is happy when meatloaf is on the menu... Great dish if you feel like inviting friends or favourite families over for an improvised dinner... one of my own personal favourites from the book. Ingredients:750 g minced pork750 g minced beef2 eggs3 dl oatmeal 2 dl chopped parsley3 dl soy sauce2 cloves of garlic4 carrots1/2 celeriac12 slices good quality bacon2 dl sweet chili saucesalt and freshly ground pepper. How to :Mix the minced meat with egg, oatmeal, parsley, soy sauce, chopped garlic, salt and pepper. Peal and grate carrots and celeriac and mix the raw vegetables into the meat.Shape the meat into a loaf and place it in an oiled ovenproof dish. Place the bacon on top and pour the sweet chili sauce on. Bake in a preheated oven at 220 degrees for 35-45 minutes.

Serve with a nice green salad and eNJOY.........


Funky Philippe 11

Not just a walk in the park... 1200 km. on bicycle is what Philippe - my husband, co-founder and rIce owner - did this summer; riding from rynkeby in Den-mark to Paris being part of a team, raising money for childrens cancer Foundation. He never really sat on a bike before for more than 10 minutes at a time, so this was a real challenge. We are all so proud of him, and the money raised for a good cause.

In June we organized a funky Friday cafe at rIce headquarters, at the same time as our quarterly stock sale, to increase the fundrais-ing for the childrens cancer Foundation.

Lots of local business people contributed in one way or another and the entire day can only be described as successful.

Finally in Paris! Philippe celebrating after all his hard work...
